RE: Best airline
I have to say that entertainment is also a very critical factor, especially on long haul flights. Virgin Atlantic would have to be my favourite, 12 movie channels, computer games and the really cool skymap on their A340’s and 747-400’s. Plus good service to match. BA were poor last time I flew with them as there was one TV screen for about 30 rows and as everyone had to watch, all of the films and other programmes were edited, something that I really hate.
RE: top ten charters
Using the five airlines mentioned:
Not flown on JMC and I flew on Monarch in 1990 so I can’t really remember.
Airtours – flew with them twice (4 flights counting returns):
EMA-ACE 6 hour delay
ACE -EMA unscheduled stop in Nantes France. According to the captain the runway in Lanzarote was too small to acommodate a full load of fuel (7,874 ft for an MD-83?) and with a strong head wind we had to stop in France.
MAN-MLA 11 hour delay and our group ended up flying out on Britannia. The Airtours flight landed a couple of hours after us at 3:00 am.
MLA-MAN ON TIME! But the video screens didn’t work so we had no entertainment.
Apart from that though the food was the best I’ve had.
Flew quite a few times on both Air 2000 and Britannia who are great. The top spot for a charter would have to go to one of these, but I wouldn’t like to choose between them.
RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???
The A380 will infact be bigger than the AN-124 although still smaller than the AN-225.
A380
Wing Span: 261ft 10in (79.8m)
Length: 239ft 6in (73m)
Height: 79ft 1in (24.1m)
Maximum take-off weight: 1,235,000 lb (560t)
RE: Future of Birmingham Airport
Canada 3000 currently use an A310 although they plan to change to A330’s from 5 October to the end of the summer timetable (26 October). Uzbekistan service has stopped, they just serve Heathrow now.
RE: Colour Schemes
My favourites are: Saudia, Virgin Sun, Air Jamaica, Uzbekistan, SAA, SAS and I love the new Icelandair Colours.
The worst, boring colours must include Monarch, AA and Britannia.
I ran a poll about this on my web site, BA’s new union flag colours were voted best, don’t agree myself but thsts the way people voted.
RE: Shortest and longest flights
Interesting coments about Air New Zealand. Weren’t they voted one of the best airlines in the world with Singapore Airlines and Palmair third (the british airline with one 737-200) in a recent poll.
On the subject of long haul, the longest I’ve flown is Heathrow San Francisco with Virgin and it was great, 8 movie channels and computer games to keep you occupied throughout the flight. Also flown to Orlando a few times with them and haven’t had a problem although the 747 classics don’t have the computer games they are still the best airline I’ve flown with.
I’ll be flying with them on Saturday and as always I’m looking forward to a pleasant flight with no problems such as those mentioned above (hopefully).
RE: A B747-500?
I have to agree with the coment from Airbus, do we really need a sonic cruiser? Will knocking 1 hour off of a London – New York flight be that great? Boeing say they are aiming for 1 hour per 3,000 miles but with the extra costs to fly at that speed I personnally can’t see a massive market for this aircraft, its use possibly being limited to the business routes such as LHR-JFK.
The one other interesting point on this subject, take a look at the airliner world poll, the fastest flight being bottom of the pile.
RE: your favorite airplane
In terms of looks it has to be the A330, as you can tell by my username. Love Lanzarote as you are so close to the aircraft and always look forward to the LTU A330-300 arriving twice a week.
Best aircraft I’ve flown on (apart from Concorde which was a one off) has to be the A340. Very nice aircraft, pitty Virgin only kept it on the MAN – MCO run for one year.
RE: The Best Airport in the world
My favourite to fly from has to be Orlando International. Followed by Manchester (Terminal 2 anyway) which is great. On the subject of the med / canaries they are all pretty basic and most don’t include air conditioning (exception of Malta Luqa) so it can get very warm and uncomfortable, but they are improving, Lanzarote being an example.
Agree with the points about Heathrow being too congested, great for viewing but a nightmare to fly from. Gatwick was horrible and congested a few years ago and I’ll be flying from there next week so we’ll see if it has improved.
RE: Palmair, what´s that?
They were voted third best airline in the world by consumer association holiday which magazine, see this months airliner world (May 2001) page 9.
RE: Air Malta good or bad?
I used to fly with Air Malta quite a lot a few years ago. They are a reasonable airline, I’ve never been delayed more than 20 minutes and there aircraft seem well looked after, there was always one in the hangar when we taxied out to the runway. There was very little entertainment back then (don’t know whether it has changed) but above all for a 3 hour flight its OK.
Malta airport is one of the best in the holiday destinations. Was only built in the early 90’s I think so its very modern and is fully air conditioned. Only airport I know where you can buy duty free on entering the country.
RE: Concorde – Whats the story?
Are you sure the new Boeing will travel above the speed of sound? The Boeing web site states its speed as “mach .95 or higher” which doesn’t exactly make a clear indication of the actual speed. The part about knocking 1 hour for every 3,000 miles is definately correct, again the source of this was the Boeing web site ([link:http://www.boeing.com/news/feature/concept/photo.html|see here]).
Also if the aircraft does fly above the speed of sound won’t it be limited to flying over oceans or seas?
RE: Concorde – Whats the story?
The new Boeing 20XX will not have the speed of Concorde, it will not be that fast. Concorde travels at mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) while the new Boeing aircraft will travel at mach 0.95 which is obviously just below the speed of sound. As the normal aircraft today already fly between mach 0.80 and 0.87 then there really won’t be that much difference. I heard that they are aiming to knock about 1 hour off for each 3,000 miles so London New York will be about 6 hours instead of 7, but still a long way behind Concorde’s 3 hours.

RE: AIRLINE TYCOON (GAME)
Not too bad.
I would have preferred it be a bit more serious than the cartoony style it employs. Liked Airbuck$ and another one called airlines which I had. Also the aircraft are not correct. The 777-300 carries 550 passengers! Not enough Airbus aircraft included either.
Above all, OK if your looking for a bit of fun but not if your looking for a more serious challenging game.
