Sea Harrier ZA195
Attached is the picture of the Sea Harrier ZA195 round the back of the Cobham Hall unfortuneately with a trailer parked in front of it and a tarpaulin over the nose.
Nice pictures Flood.
Also outside round the back of the building was another Sea Harrier FA.2 minus it’s tail which according to the new Wrecks and Relics has donated it to XZ499.
Another Skyraider
Another Skyraider stored outside of the Cobham Hall. I too went yesterday but I think the photos have been well covered so far so I wont post them unless anybody has any particular requests.
I just received my copy of Wrecks and Relics 19th edition in the post this morning. Invaluable great book as always.
I too was unable to get to Brooklands today as I was working. I keep hoping to be able to come down for an engine run but each time I have still not yet been able to make it.
There are two other Vanguard cockpit sections in museums as well as G-APEJ at Brooklands and G-APES at East Midlands. Although not built as complete aircraft they were used as simulators/mock ups. There is a simulator at the Bournemouth Aviation Museum which has been restored and repainted in BEA colours although the BEA titles don’t look quite right and the other is at the Museum of Flight, East Fortune painted in Trans Canada Airlines colours. I received an E Mail from an ex Vanguard captain who had done some training on the Bournemouth simulator some years ago.
I visited East Midlands airport on 25th August 1995 to get some pictures of the remaining Vanguards/Merchantmen. Driving northbound on the M1 I saw the Brooklands nose section on the back of a lorry going southbound on it’s delivery to Brooklands. This day there were still five Vanguards at East Midlands. Such a shame that all that could be saved was one nose section. There was a story/rumour that G-APES was scrapped by accident by some over zealous scrap men who got carried away before realising it was to be saved. There was G-APEG and G-APET on the fire dump, G-APEM stored in Elan Air Cargo colours, G-APES stored and G-APEJ in the process of being broken up with the nose having been removed the day before I visited. I do have pictures of the others if anybody wants to see more.
I have heard that the long term plan for the repaint of G-BBDG is to be in the original British Airways colours with a calibartion checker board on the side as it appeared at Farnborough in 1976 which is the last time I saw this aicraft before this week. (28 years ago)
My own personal opinion is that I think this is the correct choice of colour scheme as it never did wear the UNion Flag or Landor colours of BA.
Any other opinions ?
Nationwide of South Africa were still operating one BAC 1-11 ZS-NUJ until a short while ago but I think this may have now stopped as well.
NWA are still flying DC10’s to Gatwick at the moment but their A330’s are being introduced at Gatwick in Oct 2004. My Travel are still operating one DC10 G-BYDA. I don”t know how long for though.
Not much chance of getting on many of the other types listed in Europe though.
Dunkeswell Vampire
As listed in WR18 which I know is two years old now is the Dunkeswell Memorial Museum. When I visited on 23rd March all I could see was the Vampire. I didn’t find any evidence of the Gannet cockpit or Spitfire fuselage replica or was I not looking in the right place.
Any ideas or has it now closed ???
Dunkeswell Vampire
The Vampire XE982 is indeed still at Dunkeswell. Picture taken by myself 23rd Mar 2004.
The Wasp XV623 was last reported on the dump at Portland in 1992 although I’m sure it has gone by now.
The Sioux XT228 was sold as D-HAFR in 1979
Great pcitures as well. Thanks

We moved to Ferndown from Ringwood in 1973 when I was 11 so wasn’t there long before going to Ferndown Upper.
In the W+R book XH318 is just listed as ‘Southampton area’ No address or name so I’ve no idea.

Ferndown Vampire
Ray and all
Good to see some pictures of XH318 as I too was at Gorsemoor School in 1973. I never took a picture myself all those years ago as I didn’t have a camera. XH318 is still listed in the current W+R as being in the Southampton area with a collector who has two Vampires and a Gannet.
The reference to being preserved ‘Scholing’ could be a mispelling for Sholing which is a district of Southampton.
Any more information would be very welcome.
