N54607 DC3 at unknown location (Exeter ?) June 1988
Nice pictures Phil. From looking at your shots I must have been standing almost next to you.
I was there in a blue coat with a 20D talking to three Germans.
5th Gear (Channel 5) with Tiff Needell, Vicky Butler Henderson and Jason Plato is sometimes filmed at Bruntingthorpe as you can see the ex Olympic B747 in the background.
Top Gear (BBC2) is filmed at Dunsfold where the B747 is ex Air Atlanta Europe G-BDXJ.
Both the D60 and 10D are out of date now but that’s not to say that they aren’t capable of taking good pictures. The current model with 8.2mp is the 20D. Up to 400mm lens is good enough for most things including airshows plus the 1.6 multiplication factor makes it the equivalant of 640mm. If money is a factor you might also consider the 350D.
I am currently using a Canon EOS20D and a Canon 100-400L IS lens.
Good luck with whatever purchase you decide.

Most digital SLR’s are still a bit more expensive than that brand new. Canon EOS350D is probably the cheapest Canon new at about £529. I think there is a Nikon D50 ? which is about £479 new.
For about £300 all you are probably going to get is a secondhand EOS300D which is still a very good camera capable of some very good results. I have mine for sale on E Bay at the moment having just upgraded to a 20D.
Good luck in your search.
It was still in the usual place at Wycombe Air Park (Booker) about a week ago.
G-BIHN taken at Bournemouth (Hurn) in approx. 1988.
According to the CAA G-INFO site it was deregistered 31/01/1991.
The picture of the Sea Vixen XJ481 in the first batch I think might be at Ocean Village in Southampton. This is an area of the docks close to the Solent Sky/Southampton Hall of Aviation museum.
Depending on the date but the slide that I have is 1988.
I would recommend also the Minolta Dimage IV which a freind of mine has and is very pleased with the results. Excellent value for money. I have the older Minolta Dimage Scan Dual which I have used for about the last 7 years and still gives excellent results.
I have seen some flatbed scanners with slide/negative adapters but the results are not that good. I would definetly go for a dedicated film scanner rather than regret it later.
Wrecks and Relics is published every two years and the next one should be due about next April.
Attached is a picture of the Farnborough one shortly after it was put on display. Sorry for the grainy quality – My pre DSLR days.
The two Tornados at Elvington are complete aircraft (Not front sections)although dismantled. I saw them there next to each other at the beginning of August 2005.
Thanks for the comments Kilvy. Your are very good too. I agree with your comments about getting in. I arrived at about 0840 having driven straight into the car park with no problems and then aws confronted with about 45 minutes queuing to get in the gates.
The Blue Note from the ETPS Hunter was fantastic.
Some more pictures for you all.
I visited in May this year and had to sign a disclaimer to the effect that the pictures I took were for my own personal use, could not be published, sold or even displayed on the net including these forums.
I did go into the storage hangar and agree it is very dark and most exhibits are crammed in very tightly with barriers in front. The Islander had just arrived from Cumbernauld and was still under a tarpaulin awaiting reassembly. I thought it might have been going to be put in Loganair colours but apparently it is going to be in the colours of the Scottish Air Ambulance.
In the main hangars another thing that goes against the photographer is that instead of having boards in front of the aircraft giving information they have large drapes hanging from the ceiling which obscure a good clean shot of the aircraft.
It was good to see the Concorde G-BOAA under cover which is the only one of the British Airways examples that is. (But that’s another debate) It is a very tight fit on the top of the tail and the tail was refitted after it entered the hangar so there is no way it can ever come out of the hangar again without dismantling the aircraft or the hangar. It would have been nice if it could have been taken outside on selective summer days for pictures.
