    Hiya Becka.

    I might be wrong but I thought ‘Spam Can’ alluded to the materials used in aircraft construction in the USA during the war. I seem to have a vague memory of reading of an aluminium (aloominum) canning factory being turned over to aircraft manufacture.

    Think of the implications if the only way out of a B-17 or B-24 had been by using one of those keys like on a corned beef tin.

    But as I said I might be wrong.

    Seriously Mark, what a fantastic guy to have known, no wonder he sparked your interest. I should also say I am sure he would be immensely proud of your contribution to the preservation of 609’s photographic history and the work you are putting in to the placement of Memorials. By Honouring one you honour them all.

    Here’s to all the Jim Finch’s, may they never be forgotten.

    Ja.

    You seem to forget that something is only worth what someone else will pay for it, and they can’t be worth that much or he’d have sold them a thousand times over. A lot more of this is suddenly resurfacing as the old boys who brought it back are dying and families are just getting rid. Do you have any provenance with the helmets, that may help your friend get higher prices. But, for us in the UK, those prices seem absolutely extortionate.

    Only ever met Mr. Rudhall the once, at the meet organised by Ashley at Duxford. I learned more that day about the film ‘Battle of Britain’ than I ever thought possible. His passion for his subject was a joy to see and his delivery was outstanding. Don’t think there was anyone there who wouldn’t have willingly sat through it all again. I seem to remember him saying something along the lines of ‘I think you’ll like this’ then showing the fantastic footage of a 111 low over the field with one engine stopped.

    It was a pleasure to have met him.

    December 28th, 2007! At the speed I’m managing to walk at the moment I might just have time for one last stroll around Duxford. If I start tomorrow…….

    If I live longer or die sooner can I sue deathclock under the trades descriptions act?

    For me it wasn’t one it was four! And it happened on July 13th this year. The one and only time I will see the Breitling fighters display. It was something deeply emotional for me, not only the privelege of seeing four such beautiful aircraft, but the sheer brilliance, precision and fluidity of the display. And the meaning behind it, the respect with which OFMC treat not only the aircraft, but the veterans who flew them as well, all of which became very clear when Lee Proudfoot gave us a talk at Duxford.

    Brilliant! It’s nice to know the real history behind the Squadron. You may not know this but Pilot Officer Jones, who was apparently killed in training, actually survived the crash and was taken in by some Scottish crofters. He was unconscious for a number of days and suffered memory loss. The raid was so secret that the RAF refused to acknowledge who he was. With not knowing who he was through the amnesia, and being cared for by an Italian prisoner of war who was also a nursing orderly named Michele Baldwini, he anglicised the name into Mike Baldwin and is now the owner and manager of a lingerie (surprised the software allowed that word) factory in a town somewhere around the Manchester area.

    Math or Maths?

    Doesn’t really make much difference, I was crap at both. But seeing as the subject is Mathematics and not mathematic, maths would seem to be the right option.

    However, our transatlantic cousins have a habit of dropping odd letters anyway. Valo(u)r, Colo(u)r, Hono(u)r, Favo(u)r. It’s a wonder the country isn’t known as the ‘Nited States of America.
