I think Scott (Merlin) posted a request for info on P/O Moxey on the 12 o’clock high board. And there has been a response courtesy of Doug Cuthbertson. The substance of his reply is as follows:

“P/O Moxey was a Navigator on Wellington R1075 of 16 OTU, Upper Heyford. A/C flew into a ballon cable over Erdington Birmingham. Three baled out, three others killed.”

So, there it is. Thanks to Mr. Cuthbertson and to Scott for trying 12 OCH.

I live about nine miles from Erdington and know some parts of it well. I’ll see if I can find anything in the local press next week.

Sorry, guys, but I think we’re missing the essential point here. It seems many of us will take the aircraft by whatever means so long as it flies. For me, the real point is that these aircraft are a tribute, a memorial to those who designed, built, maintained, flew, fought and died in them. If, in sixty years time, the only airworthy Spitfire/Mustang/Lancaster etc., etc., is a replica, I would much rather that be the case than have future generations miss out on the joy of seeing them at all.

I often feel sorry for him too but that’s beside the point. I am happy to put up with ‘these teens’ for the simple reason that they often know a hell of a lot more than me on certain subjects and I will never be too proud to learn. The reason I am involved is because I have a lot of time on my hands, I think it’s a good idea and I would be very happy to meet other forum members, whatever their ages. There may be a number of teenagers, so what? If I go there’ll be at least one old fart. If it doesn’t worry me why is it worrying you?

I don’t think the RAF, or indeed the Government, had a policy of returning the bodies of those killed in action from overseas theatres of war, but it is possible he may have been wounded overseas and died at home as a result of his wounds.

You mentioned the use of the term Observer. This does seem to indicate that he qualified in that role early in the war as I don’t think the term was used after late 1941/2. Keithmac might be able to help with that one as I seem to remember a discussion about aircrew designations some time ago but I can’t find the thread.

Finally, do you mind if I dig a little deeper as I am very intrigued and would be very interested to know more?

Nice piece. As you know I’m from England and have never visited America or seen the WTC. Therefore my opinion is probably worthless, to some Americans on the board anyway. But I agree with you. I personally don’t think anyhing could replace the twin towers and like you, I think nothing should be built there other than a memorial park.

Some 400 emergency service personnel were lost on that day and to me it beggars belief that anyone would consider building something like those towers again. As everyone else ran out of those buildings those courageous men and women ran IN. That is the kind of bravery one can hardly contemplate as we sit in front of our PC’s putting the world to rights. And now, people are considering the building of another giant building to replace the towers with all its attendant dangers? The best way to honour the emergency personnel who died would be to ensure they didn’t have to face such danger again.

RE: Pilot grounded under drink suspicion

I suppose it is a bit odd that such a fuss is being made over the equivalent of a pilot drinking a single glass of wine when the US Air Force happily prescribes amphetamines (speed) to pilots going into combat. It even encourages them to self medicate.

Indeed they do and every one of us is guilty of either starting such a discussion or participating in it. Your ‘War or no war?’ thread has generated a lot of discussion and had a lot of views and in many ways can be judged a success. If, however, you think it has become ‘uninteresting’ you have the choice of ignoring it and moving on to something else. A discussion forum is obviously going to throw up a number of differing points of view, many of which are obviously going to differ from your own. That’s just the nature of the beast.

You have participated in many discussions while you have been a member of the forum and your contributions are just as valuable as the next persons. If you leave over this, the greater loss will be to you, not the forum.
