Ant,
just finished Sagittarius Rising and you were right it is a treat. The language of the day coupled with the authors truly eloquent writing style makes it a pleasure to read. The story is told well and certainly keeps your interest. A cracking read and now a book which will be reread more than once.
If anyone is interested I can recommend two fantastic books about the war in the trenches. The first, a novel, is ‘Covenant With Death’ by John Harris, a superb story about the formation and ultimate destrucyion of a fictional ‘pals’ battalion on the Somme. The second is taken from an Officer’s letters home and is titled ‘War Letters to a Wife.’ The fact that Officers mail was uncensored meant that this Officer’s letters home were far different from many others. His descriptions of the actions he takes part in are incredible and very very gritty.
So now, thanks to Moggy, it’s onto War Story.

I think there are many things that bring meaning to my life. Friends, family, anything that brings you fulfilment. Love, be it romantic love or the love of a friend or family member. My work was immensely satisfying and there were occasions during that time when I know I made a real difference to someone’s life, or conversely, their death. I have had the privelege of assisting in the delivery of a child, I have taken part in resuscitations, some successful, some sadly not. I have helped to ease the suffering of a grief stricken family and been people’s only companion as they died. I have worked to the limit of my emotional endurance. My experiences have brought meaning to my life.
“Remember, there’s always some one worse off than you are.”
I’ve always had a problem with that statement. I know it’s probably just me but I’ve always thought what kind of person would that make me if I can derive some feeling of comfort or satisfaction in knowing that other people are worse off than me?

The response was that 99% of the time we are grotesquely overpaid, however 1% of the time we are the most underpaid people on the planet. As a passenger, believe me you don’t want me to earn my money! “
I can agree with that to an extent but you forget you are doing something. You are, hopefully, monitoring the instruments and ensuring that everything is running smoothly. You don’t leave the ‘office’, get undressed and go to bed, do you?
And after you’ve ‘slept’ through your shift and the aircraft has safely landed do you then spend the next day working as a taxi driver/decorator/gardener/window cleaner?* Delete as applicable.

I don’t disagree that firefighters are entitled to a rise, it is the conditions around it which are really causing the problems. I don’t think anyone in the country is dissatisfied with the work that the firefighters do and I have no doubt that should such an attack occur they would perform just as valiantly as their counterparts in New York.
“Do the population of NY value their fire department?”
An intriguing question. I would suspect that the people of NY value them very highly, and probanly even more so since September 11th. I have read a couple of books about Sept 11th and the one, whose title I cannot remember, suggests that they are not as highly valued by their employers. The author, a retired Captain or Chief became involved the day after the attacks and has described the total inadequacy og the personal equipment issued. He claims most firefighters purchase their own safety harnesses, ropes and even the large axe like tool they carry (halliard?) because the quality of their issued equipment is poor. I was also amazed to find that they had to buy their own food for the kitchens in the firehouses.
