The point about Cantona hitting the woman standing nearby comes from a press article I read at the time of the incident, can’t remember which paper it was but it was likely to be the so-called gutter press. I agree, I think for some the bubble will burst as ever more clubs come under more and more financial pressure. However, I think the Beckhams, Keanes and the like will be immune from such problems.

just had another couple of thoughts but you probably heard the cogs turning anyway.

First of all, the operational record books of 151 & 501 Squadrons might reveal an incident in which Sgt. Laws escorted a crippled bomber and perhaps it was the bomber which went down? Memory can play terrible tricks after a period of sixty years.

It might be worth looking through Bomber Command Losses to see if any bomber loss is mentioned which might fit the situation such as a bomber hitting the ballon barrage? A long shot I know but the query was in the first place anyway.

OOOH! I’ve just had another thought, I’m on a roll now! It might be worth contacting the vicar at the church where Sgt Laws is buried, there might be something in the church records which might give a further clue. Also it might be worth contacting the newspaper in the nearest town as they should have an archive and it is almost certain that there would be a ‘local boy killed’ article as well as death notices from the family. It would be worth checking whether there is a local history centre in the area as they might have some information. You should also consider doing the same things for the Stoke Gifford area where he died.

That’s it, the brain’s starting to fade now. As you know I have plenty of time on my hands so If you need a hand with the research at all, just let me know.

This started off as a really interesting thread about what we were all doing on September 11th last year and our reactions to those terrible events. We have had many different perspectives, all of which enables us to get a better picture of the effect worldwide. Some people spoke movingly and passionately about how these events affected them.

What I don’t understand is why both of you always end up with any discussion involving the two of you descending into a slanging match? Both of you often have valid points and you both have the ability to express them clearly and passionately. You both should have the maturity to attempt to stay within the confines of the discussion so why can’t you?

RESPECT

1. To show or feel admiration or high regard for.
2. To show attention, consideration or thoughtfulness to.

Those are two definitons from Chambers Dictionary. Well, you say you have no respect for each other and those definitions prove it. I do my very best to respect other people’s point of view even if I do not agree with them. After all, people have died to ensure we have the freedom to have these discussions. Letting your disagreements descend to the level that you do gives no respect at all to those who died ensuring the right to freedom of speech.

As for myself, I’m getting fed up of your constant bickering and name-calling, it really is playground stuff. Both of you are better than that, your posts in the past have proved it, so, can we just try and get along? Please?

No, of course a nation should not sufer for the actions of it’s Government but it is almost inevitable that they do. A couple of examples, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and in the fullness of time received the gift of the first two atomic bombs. Didn’t hurt the Government, the Emperor remained, but sure as hell hurt the population. Germany started WWII and in the end hundreds of thousands of German civilians died. I trust you do not think that these two decisive episodes in our history were unnecessary?

Do you? Perhaps as well you are a minority in your country as is evidenced by the sterling service the Scots Regiments have given to the British Army and the other armed services.

RE: Remebering in our own way

I don’t necessarily think five hours of silence from us is an appropriate way to recognise the anniversary. The feeling in America seems to be a desire to get on with life, to continue their everyday lives and in doing so show the perpetrators of the attack that they have not been beaten. I also think that 9/11 affected many people throughout the world on many different levels, and it may be that they need/desire to be able to talk about the events of a year ago and forums like this might just fill that need. If you wish to maintain a silence on the anniversary then please go ahead. We will all deal with this in our own way and people will obviously respect your decision.

It’s going to be a strange day for my family as September 11th will be my father’s 75th Birthday, it is also the date I first started work back in 1978 and it is a friends wedding anniversary.

I think that is a brilliant idea of yours and I hope the webmaster takes it up. Perhaps the topic could stay there till the weekend? Each of us will have our own thoughts on the day and having somewhere to post like that could be beneficial to all, not least of all the American members of the forum for whom I am sure it will be a particularly emotion filled day.

No. A certain percentage of the population pay their wages willingly. I have not been to a football match for thirty years, I do not subscribe to a pay tv channel for football coverage nor do I buy footballers biographies, or should that be autobiographies that were written by someone else? We know and to an extent have to accept that people are not paid according to their value. But can you honestly say you like to have your nose rubbed in it by the likes of Keane? Do you not find it obscene that any footballer is getting £20,000 a week and well above for playing 90 minutes of football a week? 95 minutes if you’re a Man Utd. player in a home match? My mom had a wonderful description of the game of football…”22 grown men chasing a blether round a patch of grass.”

The point with Cantona is that he didn’t kick a thug in the crowd who had insulted him (badly) but managed to hit the woman next to him. The punishment? A fine, a ban (gave him plenty of time to fulfil sponsorhip contracts etc. etc. Who knows, he may even have had time to write a book?) and a few hours community service teaching kids how to be arrogant, sorry, play football. Now if you’d been in the crowd and assaulted a player do you really believe you’d have got off that lightly?

As for Keane, Ferguson fines him two weeks wages, around £180,000. And we quibble over giving the firemen £30,000 a year? How many lives has Keane saved during his career? I know anyone can snap but some players do it on a regular basis. The wages they are paid may reflect their monetary value to the club but you’d think at £90,000 a week he could afford the odd anger management class. I’m sure he could fit it in during one of his bans,
