RE: I know this is a long shot but…….

    Thanks Ant.

I don’t know about him ‘looking’ like a Czech or a Pole. I’ve just noticed he does appear to have a small flash on his right shoulder. I wondered whether the cannon shell casings might be a clue. Were they items that could be picked up almost anywhere or do they perhaps indicate a connection with an aircraft type which carried 20mm cannon? The dealer I purchased the desk set from said it came from a house clearance he did and he was told the house had belonged to a Pole.
    The plot thickens.

    RE: Angels One Five

    Hi,

Angels one-five is indeed a classic Battle of Britain film involving a pilot newly posted to a Hurricane Squadron. Other great characters in the film are the fighter controllers and the Station Commander. Not wanting to give too much away plot wise, the film was made using Hurricanes loaned by the Portugese AF. Obviously, special effects are not of todays standard, but that just adds to the charm of the film.
My copy of the film is getting a little worse for wear after watching it so much.

Hope this is of interest. BTW you can sometimes pick up a copy of the film from cheap video stores, otherwise it seems to appear occasionally on channel 4.

    To Moggy,

Please don’t apologise for having the ability to express in words what so many of us feel. The image you have created is, I’m sure, the way in which the majority of pilots would like to be thought of. Perhaps your message could be passed on to Gabby’s family so that they might find comfort in your words.

As always, sincere condolences to all who knew him.

    RE: Transporting Animals

The best place for advice to start with is your vet as they can tell you all the conditions your dog will have to satisfy to be able to travel. Microchipping is essential, whether your dog travels abroad or not. If s/he ever gets lost all police stations, vets and dog wardens have access to scanners to notify you of their whereabouts. Some form of sedation is almost certainly necessary.

As for the actual airline, your best bet is to check with each airline what they offer. I’d also check with the RSPCA to see if they have any suggestions.

    Hope this is all useful.

    Regards,

    Kev.

    Moggy,

    Fantastic link!!!!!
Consider yourself totally trustworthy. Perhaps you are not such an unsavoury character as your namesake in Piece of Cake.

When we do see a Beau taxying out at Duxford, what colour scheme would you like to see?
All black night-fighter colours, Far East Scheme, or my favourite, the North Coates Strike Wing, complete with R.P’s?

    RE: Best American Fighter?

I think the bomber crews of the 8th air force would probably go for the P-51. Then again, I suppose any friendly fighter was a more than welcome sight!!!

As the boy in “Empire of the sun” says…….
    “P-51…Cadillac of the skies!”

    RE: any fighters or bombers?

    Very interesting topic!

In answer to Sadsacks comment about something being missing when compared to Saving Private Ryan, I think it might be the sense of purpose. In Saving Pte Ryan the whole concept and theme of the film, following the D-Day sequences, was the mission to rescue Ryan. In BoB, the last ten months of the war is seen through the eyes of both Easy Company and the individual soldiers involved. For them, as for everyone else, the war was fought as a series of individual actions, each one often as confusing as the next. In one firefight, when asked what he was shooting at a soldier replied that he had no idea. I assume all wars are fought this way, periods of intense action followed by periods of relative inactivity, anyway I hope I never find out!

As to the question of realism, if survivors like Indiana Tony’s father are both moved and satisfied then I think that’s good enough for me. Many of us remember programs from the 70’s where the hero takes off in a 747, is seen over the Atlantic in a DC-8 and lands in a Learjet. If Mustangs, Spitfires and Dakotas have to be computer generated that’s fine. It does nothing to detract from what I’ve found to be one of the most emotional, heart-wrenching and thoroughly enjoyable programs I’ve ever had the privelege to see.

    Snoopy
I’ve found a flying officer Frederick Neal Robertson in Aces High. He was one of the pilots who flew Hurricanes to Malta from a carrier and flew with 261 Squadron. His total score was 11 and 1 shared destroyed, 3 probables and 7 damaged. He was awarded the DFM during 1941 and was also commissioned. He also flew Spitfires, Defiants, Beaufighters and Mosquitos. He collided with a B-17 while night flying durind August 1943 and was killed aged 25. It is likely that a pilot with his experience may well have had the acting rank of Flight Lieutenant while retaining the substantive rank of Flying Officer. All in all, I think this might be your man…
    Hope this is of interest
