Yeager landed by parachute after the zoom. (Official record then?) Got badly burned in the face by the still burning rocket seat that was entangled in his parachute lines.
Martindale passed 0.9 twice. First time (.92) losing prop and reduction gear. But landed back at Farnborough. Next time the engine blew up and he crashlanded with spinal injuries. Got back to the wreck to recover recording camera.

As I see it, Powles recorded the temps. etc on the climb – what else to do going to 50.000 ft?- anyway a met. flight. Then sliced across the profile on the way down. (Must read the article again!)
From Aeropla*ne Monthely Aug 93:
Leafing to the graph:
Mach .95 @ 40.000ft, 547 KTS
Mach .96 @ 35.000 ft, 566 KTS
Mach . 96 @ 30.000 ft, 580 KTS
Mach .95 @ 25.000 ft, 590 KTS
No wonder Powles was in terror. (Out with the scanner! This is interesting).
I’ll be back (sorry)
Hey! How about 3 ft. to my right: Ae. Mo. august 1993.
” High Drama” On the morning of February 5, 1952, Flt. Lt. E. C. Powles, AFC, RAF (Retd), decided to attempt a met. climb to 50.000 ft from his Hong Kong base. He achieved it – along with an unplanned rapid descent in which he experienced the then little-known effects of transonic compressibility. Although he had not set out to establish any records, it later emerged that in a single sortie he may (!) have flown higher and faster in a Spitfire than any other pilot, and may have flown faster in a piston-engined aircraft than anyone who survived (!) to recount the details.”
Fair enough. Later he also related photo-recon over China clandestinely.
Best regards
As I recall it was a gentleman flying from Hong Kong (A*roplane Monthly ??) that got the highest Mach No. in a Spitfire. Inadvertently! in a dive (graphs etc. supplied) The most credible acount I’ve read. Also he got severe SRD (?) after the event, and he shortly after stopped flying.
Hurricane etc. – I don’t believe it! By CHANCE the Spitfire wing was designed so slim – and elegant by the way.
Best regards
(Bill Gunston? I’ll try to dig it up)
Ahh Flood! That “Flower power” picture. That’s how I looked from 75 – 90. One of my younger brothers still looks like that – except he lost the hair.

Thank you for the flowers! I actually pay to see this.
And enjoy it.

“Blue Moon” 1970 – 72.
This was a recurring air defence exercise to test the Danish low level air defence system, mainly non-radar: Observer Corps spread over the country reporting to low level air defence centers with broadcast controllers. “Blue Forces” on “rat patrols”: Hunters and F-104’s. F-100’s and Drakens in their secondary role as day-fighters. (PS. Only 104’s with their own radar!) (But quite a clever system – hard to jam!) 😉
“Red“ – “Enemy aircraft” – were all sorts of other NATO aircraft – and some Danish. A “web” of routes across Denmark with a string of “Reds” 5 minutes apart at 500 feet – 300 feet (-ish) across targets like airfields.
One day in 70, 71 or 72 I stopped my bicycle to watch a big “Manta-ray” Vulcan smoking in from north to south attacking Karup Airstation. As it came into hearing range the howl of four Olympi at high power settings was mixed with the “Blue Note” of an angry Danish Hunter Mk. 51 (Mk. 4) “bee” buzzing around the Vulcan making guns and Sidewinder attacks.
This was seriously good! Don’t see – or hear – much like that anymore. 🙁
Best regards
P.S. As I got on my bike again there was the eerie sound of a couple of mini-tornadoes from the Vulcan whipping trees and bushes in the otherwise still sunny afternoon. 🙂
No, I would never report a flower. :p
Really, I would like to know how this forum works with an ignore list. I’m too nosey to make such a list. Just for the He*k of it I sometimes look at the PC (not 12) threads and have a good laugh.
There are quite a bunch here that I wouldn’t want my daughter to date – but they have some da*n interesting facts I would never learn – except here.
I’ll stay. If I’m the last one and only discuss with myself once in a while.
Best regards

Sorry, this goes far over my, not so intelligent, head. Got a nice ring to it, though! 😉
Anyway, somebody put that “report..” – button there. I’ve used it once (No, I won’t tell you!). Avoids “re-posting”: “No, You are more stupid! “)
Best regards

Hand 87_5. Try the ignorelist. I haven’t bothered, but could you please try and then give a report back here?
Best regards
P.S. And really stupid, pointless posts – why not report them to the moderator. Some has left us – of their own will? Or were they kicked out?
