I can remember reading that the Ka-50 WON the competition for the Russian Army attack helicopter – way back in the early 90’s.

Yes, it won, despite it lost the trail where both competiting choppers should find all targets on the battlefield. According to ex-head of Russian Army Aviation Combat Training Department, Alexander Railyan, Ka-50’s pilot managaed to find only two targets out of 25, while Mi-28’s crew found all of them.

Funny, but NASA’s experiment, during LHX program, supported this Railyan’s claim.

It also showed itself superior during exercises in the Russias far east – when, not invited to compete, Kamov shipped out a Ka-50 at their own expense – and it beat the Mi-28 hands down (or at least greatly impressed the military).

Never heard of that. Where did you read this?

Then it was suddenly announced that the Mi-28 was going to be procured – instead of the Ka-50 !!

It wasn’t suddenly. Head of the Army Aviation dreamed about “Su-25” just in the form of helicopter. But reality was that single-seat helicopter flying at extreme low-altitude over battlefield took too much of attention of its pilot to simply do the combat task and keep acceptable situation-awareness.

As Scar mentions – the single pilot workload of the Ka-50 mitigated against it – but another deciding factor was reported at the time.

This was the difficulty of transporting the Ka-50 in an Il-76 – due to it’s tall rotor mast – which made it difficult to strip down for loading into the Il-76.

Never heard of that, as well.

They are supposed working on pair, one as a classical AT assault helicopter the other as a scout/ reconnoissance .

Well…that’s a myth that came from the mid-1990’s when Mikheev(chief-designer of Kamov-bureau and Ka-50/52) was forced to admit that single-seat Ka-50 isn’t effective because of incredible workload on a single pilot. That’s how two-seat Ka-52 was born.

Hi, guys. Why don’t Russian MoD equip 30-mm automatic cannon 2A72 for Ka-52, Mi-28 ? AFAIK, 30-mm automatic cannon 2A72 lighter, more powerful, high accuracy than 2a42.

Actually, 2A72 is pretty inaccurate due to its ultralight barrel and mechanics.

I wonder if the ‘ур-a’ on the right relates to this tracking mode perhaps?

‘ур-a’ means ‘Guided Missile – Ataka’. Auto-tracking mode is indicated as ‘AC'(you can see it in the bottom line of button indicators) and it’s working in the video with two stationary trucks while in the video with the moving one it’s disabled which means that operator is tracking that moving truck manually.

In such a case it is the range not making any sense, 194 mtrs and it take more than ten seconds to reach target.
Maybe it just use another scale range?

Range is indicated in the bottom of the screen. 5.0km ATM of launch.

quick question… why no 650mm tubes at 885 ? Heard that 885 is equipped with 533mm (though yes..quite numerous 10 tubes)

Coz our Navy get rid of 650mm tubes. They will be gone with the old subs.

    This is an interesting coverage!

Reading between the lines, the F-35 accusittion would be reduced not just in the near future, but on the larger scale as well.

    Link isn’t working for me.

    AFAIK , Mig-29K and M/M2 series can carry payload of 6.5 T

I mean, having 6 hardpoints under wings – it’s pretty hard for me to imagine what types of munitions could compose these five tonnes of combat payload if only one EFT has been installed. 3 EFT + 4 munitions worth of 5t is the only real configuration for MIG-29/35 IMO.

IIRC, there were links posted to a news article about the new canopies entering production. I’m sure you could do a better search for those in Russian.

The only thing, related to the “glass problem”, that i managed to find is a short conversation in the comments section under this photo: http://russianplanes.net/id157916

And i didn’t find any news about some production of canopies or news about speed-limit has been lifted. Honestly, i’m sure i would be aware of that, if some official news have been released. So i presume this info is based on some rumours and speculations in our Russian aerospace-Web segment.

List of said problem for those of us who are not blessed with knowledge of Russian ?

List is pretty obvious and predictable, just like for any other old airplane:

    1) Aging electronic equipment without spare parts production due to the fact that original equipment and its components has been produced in 1970’s/1980’s.
    2) Aging airframe suffering from fatigue of materials. Particularly, some cellular material has been mentioned.
    3) Overall technical and conceptual obsolescence of Zaslon FCR – in comparison to the new FCRs with significantly greater capabilities, as N035 Irbis.
