What is the small lever next to the thrust one?

And what’s with the 28 deg sust rate??

    WoW !!!

Is there anything this magical plane cannot do? Can it cook? Can it walk the dog? Can it make coffee?

I think everyone -including Russia- should give up and order some of them planes now!

Like it will do with a not VLO one, being command guided until is close enough to begin autonomous tracking.
Or did you think that 200+ km range missiles like Aim-54 or R-37 begin their search immediately at launch?
With a VLO you will get the lock on target later and it will begin its own scanning being closer, but you would still have an effective range of several tens of kilometers.

Oh I am sorry. You mean a massive radar with a huge antenna (fighter vs missile) will need to be at under 20m and at very specific angles to detect a target like the F-22 but the tiny missile’s radar will have no problem locking on to the target? You know you are implying that say the AiM-120 can lock on and hit a bird guided by radar!

    I think that:
-J-20 is not almost as agile as the J-10 given that has same configuration.
-Combat between stealth plane wouldn’t be limited to pure dogfight. Certainly, radar detection range would be limited and “blurry” but it would suffice to use ARH missiles.
-someone that say that it’s not possible to obtain precise range figure from IRST knows nothing about laser ranging, about image data comparison and above all how active radar homing missile work and so cannot be a credible source.

And how would the ARH missile (with its tiny radar) lock on to a VLO target?

I’d be curious to know how do you define terrorists here exactly? By this definition, every opposition to the current regime might be considered terrorist then, including e.g. the French Resistance, the Americans in the War of Independence, Kurds in Iraq under Saddam, etc. Or are they terrorists only when they are Islamists because we can’t relate to their ideals?

This is not the time to justify which opposing side is right. The fighting has allowed a mess to be created called ISIS. The world needs to be ridden off it as soon as possible.

You have to remember than Assad (however bad he is) will probably prefer to share power with the opposition, (and eventually step down) than see his country broken apart!

My general point is more about the suitability in this day and age of massive bombs, fire weapons and the like in built up areas known by the whole world to be populated by civilians.

In this instance I am questioning the morality behind the governments of Russia and Syria attacking a sector of the city of Aleppo in this way. It does not mean the levelling of Fallujah is right, but nor does that mean Russia and Syria should employ such devastating tactics against civilians.

In a previous (very old now) post, I advocated carpet bombing to get rid of ISIS once and for all. ISIS is not an organized military. Using precision guided weapons does nothing to them. You need to kill every single last one of them.

Actually bombing is not so intimidating now, as it will take longer. They know where they are. US & Russia should support Syrian Army regulars, going house to house and killing them out of the major cities. But they won’t do that, will they.

Of cause we can. The rebels are not committed to the treaties like the legal government. Regular troops are bound to that or are no longer regular ones. Despite that the rebels have an intrest not to loose the support of the own population at first.

And I choose to drop the responsibility for the entire situation on the US. Their insistence on wanting Assad removed has prevented a determined solution to the ISIS problem.

What they should have done, is commit (with Russia and whomever else wishes to be part of) the eradication of ISIS, protection of civilians and restoration of order in all major cities in Iraq and Syria.

Following that, they should then try to see if what they wish is achievable. In reality the US still wishes fighting to continue because that maintains a state of chaos in which they may still achieve Assad’s removal from power. In the meantime people just accuse Russians and Syrians for bombing.

No they have not been debunked. Also you need to separate CG and artwork from actual real things.
You posted an old drawing from portugal

this is the real thing. it is pretty straight

We all have various questions regarding the design of the T-50. I think however it is more important for Russia to show that it has the industrial stamina to complete this project first. Then when it reaches operational capability we can debate how good or bad it is.

Were they equipped with BVR missiles until the very end?

As far as I know, they never were. AIM-9s from the start.

Exactly. Upgrade radar (AESA or PESA), modernize engines and its PSU, replace OLS system, add sensors for sensor fusion, digital cockpit, glass cockpit, FLIR pod, etc. Would do wonders for the jet and be financially effective. Do that and you can have ~200 Su-27’s more than capable for future defense of the nation, also gives additional time for Russia to spread out procurement thus save money.

All these you mentioned are 70% of the total value of a fighter! These are the most expensive bits, not the airframe!

Not only Greece, but also Morocco and Spain have kept the F1s, as well and even upgraded them, but they were assigned to secondary roles..

Sorry MSphere, the Greek F1s were intercepting Turkish fighters up until the very last day of service. No secondary duties for those guys.

It depends.. In France, the F1s were quickly shifted to A-G work once the 2000 came in.. But hardly any other user went for a replacement in the interceptor role that early..

    Ecuador – F1JA in 1979 – replaced by Cheetah C in 2011
    Morocco – F1CH/EH in 1978 – replaced by F-16C B52 in 2013
    South Africa – F1AZ/CZ in 1975 – replaced by Cheetah C in 1993
    Spain – C.14A/C in 1975 – replaced by EF-18A in 1985
    Kuwait – F1CK/CK-2 in 1976 – replaced by F/A-18C in 1991
    Greece – F1CG in 1975 – replaced by Mirage 2000EG in 1988
    Qatar – F1CK in 1977 – replaced by Mirage 2000-5 in 1997

Greeks kept the F1s. In interceptor service until 2003 !

    Yup…..

I could probably find a better one if I scrolled through all my photos – but this one shows the back seat occupied.

Thanks, I was wondering about that.
