Hmmmm….interesting thread.
I spent some time working at Avignon Caumont airfield in the South of France back in 1984. There were “rumours” of tunnels under the airfield that dated back centuries. Apparently, they had been opened up during the war and several of them enlarged and reinforced.
We did start an excavation behind our hangar and found what was most certainly evidence of tunnels, although much of the concrete had collapsed and was too dangerous to investigate.
In the other half of our hangar, which was fenced off, there was an entance in the floor which had been covered with old wooden railway sleepers. This entance was roughly twelve feet by twelve feet in size. We never got to explore it but were told by the locals that there were, amongst other things, Hispano Suiza engines stored down there.
I can’t vouch at all for anything being stored underground, but I did discover the remains of some kind of aircraft structure in the local woods – I have a picture somewhere – as well plenty of unexploded 20mm cannon shells scattered around the airfield. (We foolishly dug a pit, had a bonfire and chucked them in for a laugh…..20 minutes later, the local Gendarmerie turned up for a cuppa and a chat! They thought it was great fun ducking the shrapnel!!!)

Wow! Fantastic! Was starting to think that I imagined it all. We ended up with all kinds of interesting aircraft in our hangar back in the early 80’s. Sea Hawk WM994 was one of them. I believe it was bought from someone at Wellesbourne for £3000. The idea was to restore it back to flying condition. IIRC it only had 300 hours on the airframe and 150 on the engine. We had a call from the RN the day after it arrived, offering us £6000, which was turned down. Spent a lot of time stripping it down and generally refurbishing bits and pieces.
I think the outcome was that we couldn’t afford the £100K necessary for an engine overhaul and it was eventually sold for £35K.
Got lots of pics somewhere but will have to scan them to upload.
Those were happy days!

Would love to see a picture of it! Any ideas what happened to it?

WH876
I was based at BDN some years ago and went to check out WH876 at Aberporth. OC Handling Sqn kindly agreed to fly myself and OCRAFSU down there by B206 heli from Thruxton. The aircraft was in a pretty sorry state with the nose having been butchered by the fire section with their cutters. The main spars were pretty rotten in the undercarriage bays and so there was no way it would ever move again. Hence the decision to remove the front end, forward of the bomb bay doors. On arrival at Boscombe, I removed much of the damage up to the most complete frame and then the front of another B2 to graft on to it. I remember the section behind the cockpit, where the trials seats used to be fitted was completely full of sand, probably to keep the nose on the ground at Aberporth in the winds, since the engines had been removed. Incidentally, I believe this was the only Canberra ever fitted with a MK10 seat. I left BD long before the cockpit restoration was completed, but the guys did an absolutely fantastic job judging by the pics I’ve seen.
