Earlier today the museum was advised about the impending release of Tim O’Brien’s book about RAF Syerston – details about the book entitled, ‘RAF Syerston: Praesta in Officiis’ have been added here on the NAM website.
It is scheduled for publication on 12th December 2012!
I have seen the final draft in some detail and it is spectacular to say the least! I would implore anyone with more than a passing interest in Syerston to get a copy. Well… with Praesta in the title, why would you not?:)
I too would say it was Sir Gus. Is the Station Spitalgate?
RIP Flt Lt Egging, Red 4 🙁
The fact that the last RAFAT fatality was way back in 1971 makes it all the more shocking. My thoughts are with his family, friends and the whole Red Arrows team.

Is this correct? I thought I could remember fatal incidents in 1978 and 1988. One at Kemble, the other at Scampton

The JP video is great, but it’s not Cranwell. look closely during the start of the take-off sequence and you can see a couple of hangars, at least one of which is a J-type. Given that the aircraft leading out are 2 FTS, my bet is Syerston.
I agree that the front aircraft are from Syerston and know that the formation was led by Wg Cdr LA (Tony) Fergusson OC Flying Wing RAF Syerston.
But – I don’t believe that this is Syerston. The general arrangement does not support that at all. That said, it is possible that there are several edits that appear seamless.

Scott,
Tim O’Brien, the renowned aviation artist, is currently working on a book about RAF Syerston. Take a look at his website for updates.

I was at Syerston that day we used to set our 1/2 tonne SWB on FCR duties. Seeing WJ897 depart or arrive, always on 25 or 07 – whatever the wind, bought the place alive again. RRB used to turn up in his Roller and we’d watch the doors of 10 shed open and wait for her to fire up. A sad day
A 1966 Pathe News / COI film entitled “Youth is the Spur” was filmed at RAF Syerston

This is incorrectly listed as Norfolk but it’s actually Northamtonshire
I only just found this Chipmunk thread. What joy!
I flew with Nottingham and Oxford UAS from 1960 to 1963. I bet you have not seen an NUAS T10 in RCAF marks. This was in January 1960 when the Canadians from North Luffenham paid a midnight visit to us at NewtonEdit by l.garey: it could not have been N Luffenham. Let me think again.
Ref. your edit… Could it have been from 130 AMB at RCAF Langar. That was only 5 – 10 miles from Newton and their married patch was at Radcliffe on Trent, basically over the fence!
Superb – a great day!
Just a slight clarification.
…
Not so sure whether Newton has been fully handed over as I know a local Gliding Club has trying to negotiate to use the site but are having all sorts of difficulties. Mainly with Crown Estates in relation to clean up of possibly contaminated land. …
Just for interest which local gliding club
Signed – Surely those Type C – Hipped 10? bay hangars are worthy of some sort of presevation order in their own right. I wish you the very best of luck, Mr Rhodes.
