Quick update on the Leicestershire Situation
Rearsby – No sign of a Control Tower.
Ratcliffe – No sign of a Control Tower
Castle Donnington – No WW2 Control Tower remaining. There are several, heavily modified, B1 and T2 hangars around the SW corner of the site and a handful of Seco buildings around.
It’s Langar
Sounds like Langar – If the Tractor Factory was John Deere. Langar is the home of a parachute school and can be found (very roughly) between Bingham and Melton Mowbray at 52.53N – 0.54W

Used to be an AVRO repair facility in the war, and the home of 207 sqn. Post war it became RCAF Langar and was the a/c spares base for Northern Europe – Number 30 Air Materials Base (AMB) if my memory serves me well enough. It “closed” in 1963
RAF Syerston
The airfield is Syerston and it is very active to this day. It is currently the home of The Air Cadet Central Gliding School (ACCGS); the CFS Glider Squadron; 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron and 643 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS). It is part of Campus Cranwell and apart from a few years between 1970, when 2FTS and their JP 3 & 4s departed and March 1975 when ACCGS and 644 arrived from RAF Spitalgate it has been active since it opened on 1 Dec 1940. A fair concise history of the station can be found here http://www.644vgs.org/syerston_history.htm
It’s a prototype Vulcan breaking up at a display at Syerston in 1958. Run ‘Vulcan’, ‘Syerston’ and ‘crash’ through Google and you’ll get all you want to know.
I’ve heard that the sequence – I believe there’s a film in existence – is sometimes used asn an example of how even the most well-meaning eye-witnesses can get things wrong. Nine out of ten will refer to the Vulcan as being on fire, crashing in flames, etc – yet despite all the vapourised fuel there were no flames before impact.
All very sad and disturbing even though it’s nearly 50 years ago.William
There is a film – I saw it in the early 90s. It’s small wonder many people get it wrong. The whole sequence, from the kink appearing in the leading edge north abeam of 8 Shed to the main wreckage mass burning at the threshold of 25, took a mere six seconds
The picutures will be available soon – but an unforeseen, extended visit to Jutland has precluded further searching. I will post them as soon as I am able – apologies for apparently messing you all about
Praesta
Whilst I trawl ‘badly labelled’ boxes looking for photos of 2FTS aircraft at SJ I thought this might be of interest

Sorry Rlangham – my initial enquiries have drawn a blank. I will continue searching
LesB – Your picture is fantastic. Looks like yesterday!
(Shouting) YES PLEASE !!!!
Many thanks, look forward to the scans
DC
I’ve recently moved house – they are in a box in my spare room. I’ve narrowed it down to one in about forty so will be on to that this weekend
Being a bit of novice – I may need some help in uploading but wil cross that bridge later next week.
I’ll dig out “my” photos and scan them – They make an interesting collection. There’s a picture of one that collapsed u/c aircraft on screw jacks in 8 shed which you would probably remember and I think XP617 – the third a/c that suffered Cat2 when two others colided in the climb-out lane in, I think, May 66
There are several humorous stories regarding primary gliders
One that springs to mind is the hardy soul who alledgedly tried a 2000′ aerotow in one, whilst naked, between Christmas and New Year from an airfield adjacent to the A1, up north somewhere.
My favourite concered a very senior, in longevity terms, instructor who was launched from a grass airfield near Grantham with the intention of dropping into a local primary school dressed as Santa Claus. Some huge problems we encountered with the false beard which resulted the ensuing short hop being flown with considerable drift applied to keep the beard out of his eyes 😀
Unfortunately I did not witness this particular incident personally but believe it to to be true
Ah cheers – do you know the ID or any idea of what’s happening with it?
Let me do some digging – I have a couple of ways to find out
2FTS – JP3 Pictures – Syerston
Sadly I have no colour ones – I did see a photograph, in a German magazine, almost identical to the one posted by “Old Eagle” but cannot locate that. What I do have are lots of Station Photographer photos of 2FTS a/c in various states of disrepair which I found in a box in either the SHQ or AMWD before the JCBs set-to work.
XM384 (I think) in the undershoot of 25
another one at the threshold of 07 – sans undercarriage – dangling from the ubiquitous Coles!
XM406? without it’s rudder after spinning in
A copuple of nose-wheel failures at Wymeswold
If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll upload them.
Late answer
I visited a few years ago as well for my first ever flight – they have a collection of old ATC gliders, and also a US Navy warbird in bits apparently, any clue what this is?
Sorry for for this very late response – I’ve only just discovered this great forum…
The US Navy warbird you refer to is, I beleive, a North American AT-6 Texan (Harvard) just painted in Paciffic fleet colours
