Out of curiosity, how did the 109s of the Condor Legion get to Spain?
My guess would be crated, by ship.
The MoF example (c/n 1368) is at Boeing Field, not Renton.
Here you go!!
Yes,but when did it last fly? Hasn’t it been parked up at the Aviodrome for quite a few years now, and didn’t the new owners say there is no intention to fly any of he collection in the foreseeable future?
Likewise the Seattle example, unflown for over a year, it currently parked out in the open air at Boeing Field. 🙁
Graham,
I may be corrected here but I am sure they had the RAFM Tempest Cowlings for reference (which may have lead to them being refurbished in the process?).I can do better than more details about the sabre….attached a picture (assuming it come out!!)
But can you tell us which museum Dave, or is it a secret? 😉
I like DC-2s. Sad there are none currently flying. 🙁
Hence they have shows at Cosford instead?
No, RAF Cosford runs the show there, not the RAF Museum.
And note the incorrect serial of “472258” on the fin of the first restoration. This was corrected to “472218” in the second restoration in the 80s.
I think it could quite well have been this one… 😉
Lets hope he can bring one of them back to life – he has two that I know of – one is in a Tempest V already I believe.
No, not that one, the one at FoF is grey with silver accessories, not the overall “gunk green” of the one in your photo. This tends to support the idea that he has two (amongst the 300 engines he had in storage!)
It would cost my vote.
So you’d vote against the RAF if they decided to ground it? Precisely how does that work then?
Here’s a thread from about 4 years ago on surviving examples of the Sabre, for those interested
The RAF Museum does seem to end up with a bunch of donated aircraft that have only peripheral relevance, such as the aforementioned P-51D, the B-17G and the Miles Mohawk. All three could legitimately be painted in RAF colours. And the B-25 could certainly do with something other than the generic scheme it has worn since acquisition.
Typhoon (the Napier Sabre-engined one, not the one with a pair of paraffin burners)
I can’t see that happening, it would prove VERY unpopular with voters. I can just imagine the field day the press would have with it.
Nonsense. I doubt, in the scheme of things, it would cost a single vote. And in any case, it would most likely be the RAF’s decision if it would be grounded, not the Government’s.
Get it flying in 14 months? That would be brilliant!
I wonder if that is even remotely achievable. I also wonder if they’ve yet started any meaningful discussions with the CAA as to the exact scope of work that will be required, and who is authorised to carry out the required work, before they will agree to issue a Permit to Fly.
It’s great, but on my iPad I can only read it when I have a wifi signal.
No, you download it, then it is saved on your iPad for as long as you want. You don’t need a wifi signal to access it.
I’ve been getting the digital version for the past 6 months. It’s fine, but is just a scanned version of the print magazine. Other magazines (such as Motor Sport) do it much better IMHO, with additional content (such as videos and additional photos) available on the digital version.
