The director general is also the president of Cross & Cockade with a particular interest in RNAS and seems keen to get as many WWI aircraft into the museum during his ” watch ” with a touch of Empire Building perhaps
I’d far rather see ‘Empire Building’ in the form of filling sheds up with new and relevant aeroplanes, rather than (under the previous incumbent) building fancy new sheds at vast expense, then spreading the same aeroplanes around these shiny new sheds, whilst failing in the basic remit of keeping the doors open, the lights on and the archives accessible to researchers! And then adding irrelevant (to the RAF) aeroplanes such as the fake Mew Gull, ugly Miles wotsit and Comper Swift.
Maybe if the RAFM do decide to dispose of original aircraft in favour of replicas in sufficient numbers, eventually they will decide to rename the place Thorpe Park!
How about ‘AeroDisney’?
Snipes in NZ & for Kermit Weeks have the new reproduction Bentleys
How many Snipes have been built? Certainly, the first one in NZ is the same one that is now in Florida, and has an original, not new-build, BR-2.
Are there new-build BR-2s coming out of ‘Vintage Aviator’?
Make a refreshing change from only being interested in Spitfire’s!!
Ssssh, you can’t say that on this forum! 😉
Y’know with Snafu airborne, there can’t be many extant WW2 types that Duxford doesn’t see these days.
Apart from Tigercat, TBM, Lancaster, Swordfish, B-24, B-25, B-26, B-29, A-26, P-38, P-39, P-63, Firefly, MS-406, Bf-109, Fw-190, Zero, most of the trainer types, most of the transport types………
Duxford’s a great place, but a little sense of proportion is needed here I think! 🙂
Well, Hangar 11’s P-40M has been flying in a weathered movie paint scheme, complete with fake streaking from the guns on the wings, for the past couple of seasons.
Looks pretty conclusive to me.
Of course all those gentlemen could be CGI :diablo:
No, I think they’re almost certainly re-enactors.
The shot was taken at Oshkosh last July.
Thanks for the update Tango Charlie. Great progress is obviously being made, and really exciting news about the Vega Gull. 🙂
……….What beautiful aeroplanes Mr Percival built……….
Just to prove that nobody’s infallible…………..

Great news, the worldwide population of airworthy razorback P-47s has just doubled! 🙂
Well done to all at TFC
Hi David, you seem pretty definite that they were cut up,do you know the reason? Corroded, stripped, just wondering! Thanks,Pete
The reason is that it was the wish of the person who acquired them that they be destroyed.
Well serial no ends in 8 !
Steve
And begins with R, perhaps?
Anyway, I’m just off to do me some digging at Piltdown. Man, you wouldn’t believe what some people fake!
I hope you’ll take a copy of Hitler’s diaries with you as reading material whilst you’re away.
Surely it’s the pub that is being named after the pilot. I can’t see ex-BoB pilots changing their name by deed pole to “Rose and Crown” or some such!
