The Typhoon radiator went missing when it was at Freeman Field in the U.S. during the war. It (or the remains of it) has recently been rediscovered in an excavation there
Has P9374 emerged again since the sale?
I’ve seen both spellings used
Indeed, the officers seem to have cottoned on o that fact. From the Accounts: “Legacies received have previously been disclosed as restricted funds. However, since there were no conditions attached by the donor, these have now been reclassified as unrestricted funds and the comparative figures restated.”
The first one is actually in France, not the UK
I would say that it ceased to have a useful function about three years ago, after the Polesden Lacey Proms and ‘Spitfires to Africa’ fiascos, and is probably now best put out of its misery.
The WWI and VC galleries in the redone IWM are excellent and justify a visit in themselves. The rest of it, I’d agree, is poor. But don’t let that put you off, see it for yourself and make your own mind up.
The last time I was there he had the Pups, DH4s, Benoist, Spitfire and P-40 refurbishments, a BT-13, Seversky P-35 all ongoing, Dr.I waiting for a rotary to be fitted in place of a Warner, B-25 to get flying again, Stieglitz to come back from covering, D.VII to arrive, so plenty of other work ongoing!
The Typhoon is indeed missing a functioning radiator. I wonder if there is some confusion here with the RAF Museum’s Tempest V?
Does it mention oil consumption? Are you sure you’re not confusing it with the fuel consumption figure given?
So about £200k a year for your 100 hours (or £2k an hour) by the time you’ve added in hangarage, consumables (oil, coolant, hydraulic, cleaning materials, tyres etc) and the like. In reality 100 hours is a lot, unless you’re flogging the thing around the airshow circuit or hauling rides in it, so the hourly rate for the 20-50 hours most Spitfires are likely to fly each year would be higher
The Goodwood event is a couple of days after the Revival meeting, not the same thing. It is being fronted by the Boultbee folks.
Some of the suggestions here are totally unrealistic based on the fact the OP has says he will be using public transport.
I would suggest Hendon, Science Museum, Cabinet War Rooms, HMS Belfast and IWM in London (since you have said that you are staying there) and would also recommend the RAF, Battle of Britain and Bomber Command Memorials (all in Central London). If you start trying to do trips like Coningsby and East Kirkby in a day by public transport from London you will rapidly lose the will to live.
I would also second the recommendation to visit the de Havilland Museum at Salisbury Hall (perhaps by train to St Albans then taxi) – it is relatively small but worth the trip to see three Mosquitos together.
Depending on the dates of your visit, Goodwood on the 15rh September would be worth a visit for the big Battle of Britain gathering of up to 35 Spitfires and Hurricanes (although many of them will also be at Duxford the following weekend)
What happened to the Vormezeele one in Belgium?
Only 25 of the 200-odd produced had German fuselages, I’m not even sure if any of the German fuselages made it to the Merlin-engined version (M1L)
