A shame they scrapped the Hermes fin. Muppetry of the highest order!

The former RAF Oakington, a few miles outside Cambridge, is being turned into the new town of Northstowe, with 9,500 homes being built.

The Canadians are at high state of readiness though, and conducted an exercise this past summer, forward-basing their entire frontline heavy bomber force at RAF Coningsby for 6 weeks in August and September.

The current plan is to bulldoze the lot, including the dealerships and filling station, leaving just the park-and-ride.

Don’t forget that Marshall’s already have a plan in place to sell off the land to the north of Newmarket Road (including all the car dealerships and the large manufacturing site) for housing, which will take a decade or more to come to fruition and add 1,300 homes to the area.

Leave poor Jay alone. I’d be upset too if the US decided to station, at a single overseas base, a force more capable than my own country’s entire front-line fast jet force (which, for Canada, now consists of a grand total of two squadrons of outdated, clapped-out F-18 Hornets). We think we’ve got it bad here, it must be mortifying for the Canadians to see their once-proud RCAF reduced to such a token force. No wonder Jay has become all bitter and twisted. 🙁

Very, very slowly. For some reason, they don’t seem to be in a particular rush… 😉

The Kindsvoter one was for sale in the US for at least 5 years before it was sold to Germany.

Buchons aren’t exactly a desirable commodity, especially in the US, where all of the airworthy ones, without exception, have been parked up. Planes of Fame, Erickson, Kalamazoo, Cavanuaugh.

He’s not, he’s researching a magazine article, as he says in the opening post.

48 F-35s to LN, according to the USAF

The last two Buchons that came onto the open market (CAF’s, now with Richard Lake, and Kindsvoter’s, now in Germany) each took several years to sell. Boschung paid a premium price for theirs, and will be presumably expecting to sell them on at a profit. An interesting business plan.

Probably 40-ish. A lot less than in the days of 4 F-111 squadrons

Whilst there will obviously be considerable fallout in the local economy, the locals must be very grateful for the F-35 programme, which now guarantees the futures of both Marham and Lakenheath for a considerable number of years to come.

I imagine that Mildenhall will be retained on a care and maintenance basis by the MOD ?

I would doubt it, as most of the other ex-USAFE bases closed in the last few years were farmed out to the private sector pretty quickly (Bentwaters, Upper Heyford, Greenham Common, the airfield portion of Alconbury)
