Drunk Russians (with good taste) painted the underside:

I’d be willing to bet the sustainment costs are closer to the JPO estimates based on those trends.
Actually, both CAO and JPO came in @ a $1trillion lifecycle sustainment costs (excluding the $400bn “design & build” costs). Factors including fuel burn rates may drive the sustainment costs much higher.
You linked the report from March 2013, here’s yesterday’s publication:
BBC ‘Panorama’ and Sweeney do their best to portray the downing of MH17 as some sort of deliberate, isolated action. They even entertain the notion Putin specifically wanted an Aeroflot flight shot down to deliver the pretext for a war with Kiev.
If one uses one’s brain, one can deduce that every UkrAF aircraft shot down over an altitude of 3.5k metres was most likely hit by a ‘Buk’- so do the math. This also raises questions of culpability, as highlighted by Maurobaggio and others.
In an age where smartphones are ubiquitous, delivering footage & pics of reasonable resolution- is it any surprise that ‘Buk’ systems have been seen on the move in rebel held territory? Do those pics supplied by Kiev need special treatment? Do atmospheric & sinister sounding piano pieces really make up for flawed journalism?
The time of ‘painting the picture to fit the frame’ has long passed…oh and Sweeney won’t be winning that $30mn cash prize for his ‘sleuthing’ either.
You’re right, they’re probably GaAs. I was under the (false) impression that Western GaN radars are some way ahead of their Russian counterparts, when actually the latter may see the first operational land-based fielding.
It does say ToT though…..and the point of back door sanctions busting (on the miniscule chance they’d be needed) is sound.
There’s a very specific reason he ****’ed out the name of the units 😎
Its because Mnogotsvetnik-16 is actually just a low-noise GAN receiver unit :stupid: Jo knew the article meant nothing and tried to pass off a simple, everyday, low noise, extremely low power receiver as something significant, so he hid the unit names to talk it up. :highly_amused:
Fact of the matter is that Russia’s GaN HEMT production (all IC technologies for that matter) is now set to endure a perpetual backward slide from the rest of the world while the dual use technology sanctions are in place. As was previously shown (thank to Jo’s helpful photo tour of Istok’s plant where not a single piece of manufacturing gear was Russian sourced), Russia is currently 100% reliant on [obsolete] European manufacturing equipment.
So for the next few decades or more Russia will now need to work out how to build the manufacturing equipment, a task MUCH more difficult than just producing IC’s. In the meantime, current equipment will fail, spares and servicing will not be provided and what little production there is will dwindle away. At the end of it Russia will come out a decade or two from now with the equivalent North Korean level technology (unless they just buy Chinese).
Oh and Oldibas, before you fly off into another one of your primate-like, poo flinging tirades, don’t bother, I don’t fraternize with the knuckle dragging types, k Junebug?
ActionJacksonMan, I can understand you’re very upset that the Russians will shortly be series producing GaN-on-SiC MICs and amplifiers. As you know these are premium products compared to Al/GaN. However, it is very difficult to debate with someone who’s views are so russophobic that he wants to reinvent the periodic table to suite his (hurt) nationalistic feelings.
When you have answered (upon the 5th time of asking) the power output question for the current GaAs PAs on the NO36 (it’s here @ 01:42):
…then we’ll discuss «Многоцветник-18», which are S-band PAs with a minimum output of 250W, the end user and whether or not they too are GaN-on-SiC. Here’s a big hint:

A fighter that nobody saw on radar…When explanations get this complicated, I doubt them.
Post missile strike and a massive deceleration of 700knots, MH17 minus its nose section flew eastwards for 8km, can you explain why the unidentified circle on the primary ATC radar makes a tight turn and flies west- defying Laws of Momentum for *falling wreckage*?
Why hasn’t Kiev produced ATC or other evidence to support the *falling wreckage* theory? -After all, it lets them off the hook- big time.
They’re trained & experienced. Do you think the Buk crew was a bunch of random new recruits?
From where did you pull that- BBC ‘Panorama’s rear end?
The Buk-M1 (SA-11 Gadfly to NATO) can be used by minimally trained operators to deliver a lethal attack, without the safeguards built into other comparable GBADS…It is also one of the two GBADS — both of Soviet origin — that are most widely distributed in conflict zones with the potential for large-scale, cross-border or civil violence.

Work on a new generation AESA for the ‘Pantsir’ mobile air-defence system was well advanced in 2013. Importantly, it features GaN-on-SiC T/R modules. From the (un-named) producer’s official audit:
These developments are indigenous with an aim of total import substitution. Needless to say, this bodes very well for GaN radar(s) for the PAK-FA.
My professional involvement with the MH17 incident is now minimal, and I am not part of the ongoing investigation. You would have to address that question to the Dutch Safety Board.
Head right over to http://www.whatreallyhappended.com – they have lots to say about wicked bankers. Meanwhile some of us will stay here and try to talk about MH17.
I know more about Lehman Brothers than you could possibly dream of, but I will say these guys weren’t far off the mark:
I suggest you cease belittling and patronising others and stick to warhead theories, and why *falling wreckage* presents itself as a circle then fly’s backwards after executing a 90° turn, blah…blah…blah…
You really should spend the time to read Kissinger’s memoirs. It’s full of conspiracy theories, but at least I think it’s safe to say you won’t manage to attack the source.
Nic
Agreed, and nothing changes. I would highly recommend doing some serious research on the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 that triggered the subsequent global financial crisis and recession. It was the degree of complicity with high level political (and judicial) connections that truly beggars belief. Personally, for me that was the last straw.
There is a certain quarter here who are a mouthpiece for the political elite of The West- who would have you believe that Aristotle’s democratic ideals for the masses have reached their zenith and been perfected. In actual fact, it is Socrates & Plato who would be smiling to themselves, wryly.
Interesting points TEEJ. I don’t deny ATC software kicks in when an unusual ‘event’ occurs. But, how accurately do the ‘circle’ and shootdown times correlate? Why not several circles several km apart? -after all MH17 didn’t come down in one piece did it?- but several large sections spread over many km, and (as shown) the yellow parametric icon can easily distinguish sub-1km distances
Also, another reason I don’t buy the circle as “wreckage” is that when MH370 turned off it’s transponder(s) shouldn’t its ‘square’ with data window have turned into an unidentified ‘circle’ also? After all, what we’re being told is that it flew on unresponsive for several hours, and as it supposedly didn’t break up in flight- it’s ‘circle’ would have been tracked for hours, no?
I won’t get into the Buk TEL saga because that’s an info wars can of worms in itself, so let’s stick to what little evidence we have.
For crying out loud!! The PRIMARY source is Rostov/Tanak ATC centre!! (@11:00 precisely):
Common sense dictates that the rebels either fired @ an Su-25 and hit MH17 or fired on MH17 thinking it was the Su-25. After all, the UkrAF did operate in the area (something they still deny):
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/23/rebels-ukrainian-fighter-jets-mh17
So either that circle is a fabrication, an ET UFO or an unidentified [military] aircraft.
Finished reading it.
As I anticipated, the preliminary report has demolished the silly conspiracy theories that have been posted over the last month.
Primary and secondary radar data show no signs of mysterious fighters close to MH17…
Really? It actually says ATC radar data analysis from Russian and Ukrainian sources are “ongoing”… But I guess it leaves enough room for your very own conspiracy theory- maybe you think the hollow white circle is a UFO of the non-terrestrial variety?
Where do they get second hand T2s & unwanted T3s? The only aircraft anyone is thinking of getting rid of are T1s. Unwanted T3s haven’t been ordered.
My bad, I meant T1 – but even these may be irrelevant. So you don’t think the flurry of EF consortium member, high-level government activity since the Modi victory has anything to do with off-loading 124 T3Bs? (and avoiding billion$ in contractual penalty clauses?). K.
They more than ‘just mentioned it’ – Eurofighter Consortium made a formal counterbid in July!

That the Indian Defence Minister is also the Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley), is a huge stumbling block for Dassault.
He and PM Modi will be keen to attract German investment and industrial capital/engineering expertise. It goes without saying that the consortium partners as a whole (and Germany in particular) have exponentially more to offer Indian economic prospects (targeting double-digit GDP growth) than a cynical extension of a credit line.
Seconding MadRat, a mix of secondhand T2s and unwanted T3s with upgrades, may well prove very attractive for L1.
To be honest, up until fairly recently I privately considered the MS-21 to be vapour ware, so I’m quite impressed how far an entity made up of minor or marginalized (take Yakovlev, they would probably not be around anymore if it wasn’t for the resounding success of the Yak-130) Soviet legacies managed to come with it!
Well this week the programme had a substantial increase in it’s credit line ($400mn). This may be down to issues with the prototype, but it does indicate a determination to get it airborne sometime next year. The favourable rates of interest and the sum total government investment can be taken as an endorsement of the programme @ the highest levels.

This high confidence is reflected by the purely commercial/business entities involved. A cynic, of course, would say it’s ‘too big to fail’. Eitherway, it doesn’t look “on the brink”.
