HAC Spitfire cowlings were at Retrotec in December having new fasteners fitted as current ones were loose and rattling
Yup…and looped.
Well XM558 didn’t, but there was footage of a test pilot rolling and looping an early prototype
Not being at all rude, but kinda nice the elderly gent was correct considering how many rumours etc turn out far from the truth
Excellant video…Never noticed that the Griffon ran in the opposite direction to the Merlins before.
I attended RIAT for 2 days, and spoil myself to a grandstand for one of the days. I also find it most frustrating to have a number of photographers in the grandstand with massive lenses clicking dozens of shots with each pass, both the visual impairment and the sound of the “shutters”. Luckily this year not one right next to me, but several people had lenses sat right next to them even though there was a photograph area roped off.
Much better at Flying Legends, where I enjoy the FoD membership enclosure and any photo guys are positioned behind the all sitting area.

We would like to warn those people without tickets to this weekend’s Air Tattoo to avoid the area as the event is sold out on Saturday and Sunday and the surrounding roads will be extremely busy.
There will be no tickets available at the gates and Air Tattoo stewards and security staff have been instructed to turn away anyone that has entered the car parks without a ticket.
Unprecedented ticket demand plus an extended Friday opening time look set to make this one of the most popular Air Tattoo’s in recent memory. A few Friday tickets are still available and must be purchased in advance HERE.
Is the Shark mouth P51 new to the UK register, or was in another guise before?
Perhaps online booking and home printing of tickets up until two or three days (assuming availability) before would be better than two weeks which is current policy..
Now that seems like a happy balance, folk can then at least choose nearer the time (if tickets ares still available) and check weather etc
How many of the above contributors bought tickets in advance?
I did, why? Because I wanted to ensure I could attend and didn’t want to risk it being sold out before the day, or drive up from Hastings to find that the gates are closed because the tickets are now sold out.
I know I can normally get Shoreham tickets in advance and are valid for either day, but this must cause a logistical nightmare, especially like this year with the Vulcan only attending for one day.
Septembers general admission is £24.75….seems agreeable to me.
Having said that, it may cause a risk of all the advance tickets not being sold, and therefore the opportunity to sell more on the day would be lost.
I thoroughly enjoyed this years Legends, and goes down as certainly one of the better ones in my opinion.
I found the commentary OK, I know to aviation buffs the same old stuff gets churned out, but there are folk and children who don’t go that often, or maybe its their first air show, and the commentary is therefore very informative. Sure, the open mic bits were a tad amateur but forgivable. Just like the Ju52 revving up to full throttle drowning out the Manhattan Dolls whilst Sally B performed. And I was sitting in the Friends enclosure right close to a speaker, so the commentary and music was both loud and clear.
I think a great job was done by all those involved.
I attended on Saturday and I must admit I thought it was one of the best air shows I’ve been to.
Unfortunately the Gladiator didn’t fly because of the cross wind, but the variety of planes, and the class of flying was excellent.
I enjoyed the commentary, with some comic routines from the guest Tiger Moth commentator, and quite a few pauses where one was left to hear the beauty of the display without the constant chatter.
They even had large scale RC flying, which culminated in a large RC Extra flying with a full size. A very entertaining display.
I have always enjoyed Shoreham, but this year they did rather excel!
It’s hard to imagine the arguments for the market and policing, when a two day model show has been held at North Weald for years.
In fact Wings and Wheels model show was held last w/e 28-29 June.
…And if I’m not mistaken the left hand tyre pressure is not exactly as the original in service machine and whats more has “new” air in it and not as used in WW2!
Sorry folks…couldn’t resist.
:dev2:
“The investigation found that the condition of the trim tab attachment screws’ locknut inserts, which showed evidence of age and reuse, rendered them ineffective at providing sufficient clamping pressure on the trim tab attachment screws to keep the hinge surfaces tight.”
I’m not sure how you would scrutinize lock nut inserts without dismantling. If the bolts were fully home and tight/torqued then they would appear to be fine, even if they had been reused or lacked high tensile strength. Especially as it would appear as they were inserts, so still attached to the elevator, then my guess is they would not be visible when assembled.
It’s easy to criticise or suggest that scrutineering would have prevented this tragedy, but that is the wonder of hindsight!
I do hope an individuals speculation about SNAFU doesn’t involve masses of posts of other rumour’s and counter speculation….
And if it does then please go make a separate thread…
