With regards taking photographs of small objects, when I visited Hawkinge some time ago they explained that some “visitors” had been taking photographs and then placing ad’s on ebay or other emporiums with said parts for sale, and if they raised a goodly price then the “visitor” would return and be a “remover”.

This is more understandable, as folk are unlikely to return and walk out with an air frame under their arm, so can see why some museums distinguish. It would also explain the difference between knowing items are there and sharing an image with other would be purchasing parties.

If the exhibits are behind glass, as in some more substantial museums then I should imagine it’s less of a problem than the many items wired to easy to reach boards in other/smaller museums that do not have the same security facilities.

I think this is a real issue, and a ban on photo’s is a decision that has not been taken lightly. Most folk working at the museums are also very interested in historic aviation rather than massive pay packets (if any at all!), and are very upset when articles are stolen.
Again, I’m sure, depending on the individual and the attitude etc, there are also jobsworth’s who police this ban in a less than sympathetic nature.

I noticed the smoke rings too, though they were more evident on the Saturday due to the blue sky.

They were formed from the smoke trial, and they were more failed vortice rings that didn’t make it. On those few times a smoke ring was formed they hung around for a goodly amount of time whilst the rest of the smoke drifted away…most odd.

In fact, I spent more time looking at this odd phenomena during the display than the planes 😮

I spoke to Colin Hammond of the Hastings Model Flying Club (They now fly on the A259 near Pevensey but started at Pebsham), and he recalled the airshows.

He remarked that the planes landed on the (now) football pitch field, with the cars parked where the (now) cricket pitches are.

He mentioned that an Islander landed during the display, and this is listed in the 1981 programme, so although he was thinking of 1979 he may have got the years muddled or the Islander appeared for several years. There was also talk of the possibility that telephone wires were taken down to allow the planes to access the site.

He also advised that Kenny Binks and Chris Foss (A model plane designer based at Shoreham) were flying model planes at the same display

    Hi Elliot,

Certainly didn’t stike me as self indulgant….I enjoy all the posts on here, and your diary type posting was very informative and the pics were great too!

I love Legends but have not been able to make it for a couple of years, so to read and see was fantastic…

    thanks

A member of a model flying forum took some rather good arrival and departure shots…amongst others. Worth pointing your browser at.

Maybe used for the Poppy Drop when in Remembrance mode ?

…dont think so, IIRC they use the bomb bays lined with wire mesh.
I’d be suprised if they did such a big change to the airframe, even for the poppy drops…..

I’m glad that someone from the 1066 MFC has contributed to this thread. I had been trying to make contact with the club, through its website, but without success. The reason was to enquire whether in 1979/80/81 there were 1:1 scale flying displays – the Hastings Air Shows – at Pebsham.

    Hi,

I am the secretary of the 1066 model flying club, and my details should be on our website but I haven’t seen or heard any contact with regards this.

I am not sure of the year, but I know I attended a full size display at Pebsham where I now fly models. Most possible around the mid 70’s.
There are two local clubs, 1066 MFC here in Hastings and the Hastings MFC that flys between Bexhill and Eastbourne. (http://www.hmfc.org.uk). Its is the Hastings club that “borrows” our field for their big show this coming weekend.

I know a number of members who may be able to help, but am off to France for a weeks holiday, so will try and remember on my return, else shoot me a pm to remind me

    Wes
