Hamburger,
I know the Fitter isn’t the prettiest of aircraft, but you’ve gotta learn to control your temper… :diablo:
DG of Sukhoi Aircraft Corp beaten and robbed
Press Trust of India July 12, 2005
The Director General of Sukhoi Aircraft Corporation was beaten and robbed by armed robbers in his cottage in Moscow region, media reports said on Tuesday.
Mikhail Pogasyan called police after four robbers armed with pistol entered his countryside home through an open window shortly after midnight yesterday, beat him up and gagged his wife and son, Itar Tass said.
The robbers decamped with his coin collection and jewellery worth about 70 thousand roubles (about $1500), the report said.
The US-1A was closer to 270kts. I don’t think the Kai’s range or endurance figures have been publicly announced, but given the newer donks you can probably expect a 20% improvement.
Specs are probably in JAWA, but here’s the basics:
Dimensions: similar to US-1A (length 109 ft, span 108 ft, height 32 ft)
MTOW: 125,000 lb (est.)
Max speed: 300 kts
Cruise altitude: 20,000 ft (max)
Powerplant: 4 X 4,590 shp Rolls-Royce Allison AE2100 (+ LHTEC T800 BLC blower)
Received the photos c/o ShinMaywa shortly after the Kai’s first flight in December ’03. Beautiful shots but not my handywork, unfortunately !

As Aurel says, most of the flying barrels (and the straight-wing fighters like the F9 Panther, F2H Banshee and Sea Hawk) from the ’40s and ’50s were hard on the eyes, as were many of the trainer ‘fighter’ conversions and most of Russia’s early attempts at bullet-nosed radar interceptors.
A-29: The L-39 and Ching-Kuo ? Compared to the L-29 and Tzu-Chiang, they were the lookers in the family. !! ๐
The only aircraft that makes the 2-seat Typhoon look well proportioned:

And the competition…

Jacko,
My numbers show 23 PS-1s and 20 US-1As. The redundant aircraft question is a good one – I seem to recall that a number of aircraft were lost in crashes, but have no explanation as to why only 7 – 8 of the 20 are still operational (fatigue??). I will ask my colleagues in Tokyo for you.
The photos (which show the first flight of 9901) were received via the airframer. You’re welcome to try ShinMai… ShinMey… the OEM directly: http://www.shinmaywa.co.jp/english/contact/contact.htm.
I’ll add a couple more pics later today.
Jacko,
Interesting question, though I can understand why you ask. Yes, to the best of my knowledge the two prototypes really are new ships. The redesign to the pressurized fuselage and wing probably would have made a rebuild just as expensive. Bear in mind also that the JMSDF only finished buying its 20th and final US-1A a couple of years ago anyway; the production rate has never been dramatic, which probably explains the price tag.
Here’s proof that, despite never being a ‘Top 10 coolest looking’ contender, the US-1AKai really can defy gravity…
A129I was briefly considered, but it was too pricy. (Not to mention the fact that anything with a two-seat tandem cockpit never stood a chance against the Apache mafia and Philly Congressmen… :diablo:
Agreed, the F-106 was a looker (as were the Skyray and F-86), but you just lost any hope of respect by including the F3H ๐
Just kidding. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (unless a reality show is involved).
Others on the forum will likely have greater insight into Chinese disposable powerplants, but I’d imagine most of China’s indigenous designs are predicated on the J69 (air delivered into the country by the Firebee…!), enhanced through lessons learned on the Saturn 36MT.
Looks like the result of an illicit liaison between the Magister and Javelin…!
Typical of the IIAF’s evolutionary development path (similar to what’s being pursued with their fighters): first Dorna, then SF211-like Tazarv, then the v-tail M-346 lookalike. More of a focus on developing technology and design/build experience than actually pushing ships out the door.
The red helo is the Eurocopter EC120B Colibri, which China already has a 24% stake in via CATIC. China is now placing the type into local production as the HC120 – the first aircraft were supposed to come off the line in Harbin at the end of 2004, but I’ve seen no proof of this yet. The PLA has stated its interest in procuring the type (trainer/liaison/scout), with China having reportedly placed an order for 8 plus 50 options.
Re: the Z-9/MMS, that looks fairly basic (and similar to some of the Russian designs). Could be an R&D effort in support of the Z-10. The Z-9 chin-mounted sensor package looks substantially more mature.
On the issue of Chinese turbofan development, IMHO this is still a decade behind the West. Most of China’s military turbofan/jet development is still based on mods to Russian types, and engine technology acquisition remains a focus of Beijing’s ‘gray market’ (so to speak) efforts. I would advice caution in comparing the reliability and performance of the FWS-10A to the F110.
Damn, that ainโt easy.

If this were production systems only (i.e. no Blackbird or Tigershark), Iโd add the MiG-31 and F-11 Tiger.
