Its a tricky one, he flew AD251 from early August to November 1941, so at first it would have been green/brown/sky,but as you probably know the camo changed to green/grey in mid-August ’41. Fuselage roundels A1 definately.

When Deere was a Flight Commander with 602 Sqn. he made claims flying AD251. The codes for 602 were LO but I don’t know his individual letter.

Then & Now and Men of the Battle are 2 books I wouldn’t be without, but I’m thinking of books for newcomers to the subject. The others mentioned can also be bought cheaply in paperback.

He was at Duxford last May signing with CCB, but can’t see his name down with anyone for next week though. He is OK though as I only just corresponded with him last week.By the way, asigned first Ed. copy of First Light was on sale at CCB for over £100.

As child of the sixties myself, Seafuryfans first paragraph says it all for me,but undoubtedly seeing the Battle of Britain on the big screen (and they were really big screens then) was what started it all off for me. At first it was really just the planes I was interested in but as I grew older and started to read the biographies, the human aspect became more important. My work takes me into peoples homes and I would always be on the lookout for signs of service in the RAF.On occaision I would comment on the person in the photo, only to find the husband/brother had been killed. Luckily the people would like to talk to someone who showed an interest and I would often leave the job far later than I had planned. When my eldest son got to the age of some of the lads who flew, this further brought home the sacrifices that generation made, believe me when you have children war takes on a different aspect. Some people say how can you feel nostalgia for a period when you weren’t even born,as many of you know, you can.Its an interest thats turned into an obsession, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A bit late for this post but someone else might be going to Normandy and want some tips. The Merville Battery is NOT to be missed,it seems to get overlooked when D Day is talked about. It was a tremendous achievement by the British at this place.

Anything without a propellor (except the Meteor, Me 262 & 163 ).Why? because they don’t have props.

    just kidding.

Sorry but that wouldn’t attract much of an audience. Individual “special” raids such as the Chastice operation catch the audience imagination, how would this particular raid do the same.

Bombing raids were long drawn out affairs, quite often just hours of tedium interspersed with moments of shear terror. How would you build it up, the Dam Busters featured the problem solving with the weapon, the crew selection and training, it would be hard to show this to any great extent about just one raid and keep the audience interested.

I was just saying that would be a film I would personally like to see made as the ultimate Bomber Command film has yet to be done.
I agree it wouldn’t sell as there isn’t any American angle, but a good script could easily build it up, the German pilot’s family in the target area etc.leading to the ultimate horror of over 600 RAF aircrew lost in one night.Ultimately I suppose if there isn’t a U.S audience then it wont get made.

Having just listened to the radio production of Len Deighton’s ‘Bomber’ I can’t help but wonder why it hasn’t been made into a film, though perhaps there is a little too much to cram into 90 mins – A BBC mini-series perhaps?

A film about the Nuremburg raid (94 RAF bombers lost) would be my choice, from the viewpoint of a RAF crew and a Luftwaffe night fighter pilot. One things for sure,as CGI gets even better we should be in for some treats in the future, as long as the script writers stick to the facts.

Has to be Bader, the way he inspired the demoralised Canadians of 242 Sqn.
On the German side Rudel, he was the nearest thing to a one man air force.

This is my first post as I’m new to the forum, but I’ve spent a good few hours going over the Historic posts.I wish I’d found this sooner as it is brilliant, with the right mix of characters, comedians, nutters etc. Most importantly though is the vast depth of Knowledge on this site.As a frequent visitor to Mecca (Duxford) I hope to meet some of you one day.
