Ah, that rules that one out then, I’m surprised to find so many people on the genealogy records with that exact name, makes it difficult for you to be sure of the exact person.
You don’t know when he first flew do you? There is this person on Ancestry, but no way of telling if it’s your man sadly… William Joseph Johnston
Age 21 Born abt 1921 Date of arrival 12 Jul 1942 Sailed from New York, New York, United States, Arrived at Liverpool, England
Never mind, worth a try! I look forward to that, 58 MU is something I knew nothing about until I started chatting to veteran Ron Brown, just reading his book, it’s very good!!
Sorry, somehow missed the comment made in Post #21, yes added that a short while ago about the Memorial at Staunton. Re 58 MU, have been chatting this week to Ron Brown about his time in 58 MU, sadly he wasn’t there when Lancaster W4270 crashed, but I’ve contacted the NA about the file they have wondering if the recovery is mentioned, you’ve not come across anything have you?
Can’t make the book signing sadly, but hope to catch up soon, I’ve passed the information on and am sure the phone will be ringing!!!
Sorry I missed you too, would have loved a catch up, I’m already a quarter of the way through, found a mention of two of my crew flying with other crews in early 1943 so of course having to follow that up now, but what I’ve read is excellent!!!! Just out of interest as people are asking me, can you purchase them online from the shop?
Called in and picked one up while out making deliveries, got a day off tomorrow, looking forward to reading it! Looks great on a quick flick through!
Does Terry know if any of the details in your first post are fact? Just wondering, say for example we knew that date of death is definitely correct we concentrated on that to find him? Of course if those service numbers are his and he is a relative, Terry could apply for his service history.
I agree with you, I think he may have been too young, the information seems hard to verify with the surname being popular, if the service numbers are correct, here’s one of his promotions in the London Gazette, right hand column, 4th entry from the bottom, but he probably has already seen this…. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/35966/supplement/1573
I was lucky enough to go to the same event Radpoe Meteor, was an amazing night, the other chap was Eric Quinney I believe ,flew P for Popsie in the Dambusters film, there’s a short documentary about him here, very interesting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMtS4B72h48
Was lucky enough to meet the family of Grey Doyle Cumberbatch from Barbados, who is buried in our village Churchyard, here’s his story written by his nephew…..http://barbadosfreepress.wordpress.com/2012/10/03/paying-tribute-to-an-only-son-who-died-in-lancaster-bomber-ed-549-barbadian-sergeant-grey-cumberbatch/
Yes, I’ve commissioned it, the artist specialises in portraits, but this is something different to the work she usually does, so no others sadly.
Thank you, will pass that on to the artist.
Although still unfinished thought you might like to see this painting, especially with the date yesterday and today, it’s a commission piece, can’t wait to see it finished!
Just call it revenge for spelling my name wrong…..again!!! :highly_amused:
