Just made a small donation in thanks for all the support and help NAM have given our small project this year, when I add up the help you gave to obtain the interpretation board, making our short film, and promoting our booklet it doesn’t quite balance out, but every little helps…..and it will be great to come to Cockpit Fest unshaken : )

    Happy New Year, Jack

Happily got my copy yesterday and couldn’t wait for all the guests to disappear so I could watch it. Had to watch Dr Who to see Just Jane of course, but then losing any hope of getting the TV, went to watch it on my laptop. It’s a truly remarkable film, I was glued to every word and expression from these amazing men, so glad work like this is being done because soon it will be too late sadly, and these true experiences non existant to record.

I feel it’s not only a true insight to watch now, but will become far more valuable to us in years to come, well done, thankyou for making it, and special thanks to those veterans who took part, it obviously wasn’t always an easy thing for them to talk about not surprisingly.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little stash hidden away!

As long as this time we make it clear we only have the story and a few pieces of wreckage…not the whole thing parked on the lawn as we had a few disappointed visitors last time, and even thought the posters show a Lancaster we can’t possibly have a flypast in February!

Hopefully in the next 4 months we will have some of the relatives of the crew to visit who haven’t had chance to come yet, as well as having a small unveiling arranged by NCC, so I’m pleased it gets the seal of approval. I have to say the designer of the board as well as using our proposed detail added some facts I’d not thought about, especially the estimated current cost of a Lancaster.

Yes the colours blend well with the environment and when you approach the Memorial from the Church Walk it sits well, very proud of it, just wish someone hadn’t joked about it making a lovely coffee table, my nightmares have changed! Thanks for putting some more booklets in the pub, they go like wildfire!

I think it’s an excellent idea, and for visitors it may make it easier and quicker to find displays they are specifically interested in (or ones they are not so bothered about), we would like to be part of it with the Lancaster W4270 exhibition, we love our spot in Hanger 2 as well, but a change of scenery is always welcome, Jack

So glad you made it, and that sounds like a wonderful thought provoking moment you had, its so peaceful there. If you’d turned around from the board and looked down the valley you’d be looking towards the crash site, the day of the rededication we heard the BBMF Lancaster approaching for the flypast and I ran round to that area to see her fly in, I was almost on a level with her as she came up the valley, an amazing heart stopping sight.

Thankyou John, I for one am very sad this particular project is coming to its natural end. Not only for what has been achieved in the last 11 years as a tribute to these men, but on a personal level the similar minded people I have met through this, friends who I really value, and things they have taught me. There are still some details regarding this accident we have to admit we will never know, but on the whole I’m delighted to be part of recording as much as their story as we can for future generations, just 7 men out of the thousands and thousands that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, but every one as valued.

Please do, it looks amazing, gives visitors so much more information. We had a couple of visitors while we were there, clutching their Aviation Booklet, and Annie reported others later in the day, great weather for being out and about, and I hoped they enjoyed it and found it interesting. Yes, Snowdrop Sunday beckons! Preparations have started, and it will be the day after the anniversary of the crash…but how could it be any different! The Lancaster Exhibition will take pride of place.

Thankyou to you Peter as well, you more than played your part in this! Without going too much off subject, I had a query the night before last re identifying a piece of wreckage I’d listed on the Nanton Forum as it was then, someone had found the same piece, and asked if I’d ever managed to identify it, you had done it for me back in 2000!

Pleased to report the Interpretation Board funded by Notts County Council’s LIA scheme has gone up at Staunton-in-the-Vale this morning, it does mean that all visitors to the Memorial can now read a short history of the project and put faces to the names of the crew, huge thanks to all involved, especially TwinOtter who gave me the information to apply for this and Pete West who provided the stunning artwork of the Lancaster, hope we’ve done our crew proud!

‘One does not have to be from that generation to feel exceptionally close to all of this.’

Very well said! A lot of us try and do our bit to ensure the sacrifices made are remembered.
