deliver the first three of 12 refurbished Soviet helicopters Dec. 5 at Kabul, Afghanistan.
The Airmen are involved in mentoring the Afghan national army air corps and helped acquire the aircraft, donated by Czech Republic officials.
The MI-17 helicopters are meant to help the Afghan national army air corps transport troops
Only 6 of the 12 helos are Mi-17, the other half are Mi-24V gunships :diablo:
You forgot MiG-29SMT for Yemen.
Can you prove that those were new-built airframes, not refurbished “white tails”?
Suppose that MiG indeed built new ones for Yemen, than why did they sent refurbished airframes to Algeria, risking the whole deal?
Well, MiG had a big issue with spare parts supply during the 90’s.
Couple that with the fact that they didn’t built any new plane (I’m talking serial production, except Indian K/KUB) since 91-92 and you get the picture.
The recent debacle in Algeria doesn’t help them, also.
On the other hand, Sukhoi seems to be very reliable, always delivering what was requested and on time
OK, so where do Georgian K’s come from? Straight from the factory in Tbilisi?
Possibly from the Czech Republic.
One UBK and 5 Su-25Ks are missing from Czechia, some say they might have ended in Georgia:

just type Su-25
And did Hungary ever operate the Su-25?
No

Armenia got some Su-25K’s from Slovakia, and Georgia has sold some of its Su-25K’s (Where do they come from? Bulgaria? Macedonia?) to Armenia and Gambia
Bulgarian and Macedonian birds are all accounted for and still in their respective countries.
As for Slovakian birds, out of 13 they had, one crashed, 2 are in museums and the rest of 10 were sold to Armenia:

and without that annoying bdmilitary logo smack in the middle of the aircraft 😀
Besides, all Ethiopian Mig-21s I’ve seen so far hav a two-tone camo, either sand and brown or sand and green, while Libyan ones have a three-tone camo with the above mentioned colors.
1100 is definatly Ethiopian
An A-400 or C-130J variant procured from an European nation seems to be wishful thinking so far.
Indeed, but a potential AC-27J would make sense. It’s smaller and more maneuvrable than the two you mentioned. That coupled with the already integrated MANPADs defence suite would give it some survivability.
It would also be much more cost-effective than an AC-130 class gunship

According to this, the IAR330 was introduced in 1999, and a naval variant was introduced this year, and the production line is still open.
The SOCAT gunship upgrade entered service in 1999, true, but all the 25 airframes were produced earlier as usual Pumas in service with the RoAF.
The 3 naval ones are also rebuilt from land based-versions.
The 4 ones for Ivory Coast in 2003 were former SAAF or RoAF examples also.
Hey, even the 10 examples delivered to UAE in 1993-94 were former Romanian AF examples, refurbished.
The production line is closed, but complex overhauls and upgrades can be made at any time, and are made continuously since the production ended.
Does IAR still produce its own puma in Romania (IAR330 i believe)?
If so, a new batch of these could be procured?
No, production ended in early 90’s (92 I believe) after 163 built. Besides, these wouln’t be of any help, since we built the L version, which is quite different than what the UK has got (IIRC equivalent to C version in terms of airframe, systems and engines).
Also I recall there were some pictures on a website of some Pumas in an MOD vehicle store that they had purchased secondhand from South Africa to act as an attrition reserve. Although not flyable they would be made so if needed. Don’t know how many they bought though or if there are options to buy more.
6 former SAAF Puma 330L were acquired by your MoD in early 2002. Four were due to be converted to HC…whatever standard by IAR Brasov in Romania, with the other 2 stored as reserves.
A very teadious job, as they literally had to be downgraded for the sake of commonality with the rest of the UK Puma fleet. Just an example – the Turmo IV turbines had to be replaced with the older, weaker Turmo III. The first helo, ZJ954, was delivered in July 2004 and I haven’t heard anything about the others since than.
EDIT:
Out of these 6 Scramble.nl lists ZJ 954 and 955 in service, 956 and 957 “on order” and 958 and 959 stored
dingodog, could you please repost the HUGE ones as thumbnails?
