Romanian Pumas don`t carry any filters or guards over the engine intakes. The only ones that I`ve seen with filters installed were the ones dispatched in Bosnia.
None of the 4 SOCATs deployed to Bosnia had engine filters. You can verify that by searching on Airliners.net for “SOCAT Bosnia”
Numbers 56, 69 and 78 are the only ones to have filters (yet).
Fact is it decreases engine power, maybe that’s why it isn’t used too much on the Romanian Pumas.
Besides, a Puma can safely land on one engine if the other is hit by a bird.
Just my 2 eurocents:)
THey supplied 26 SOCAT societies.
25 actually
anyone know what the EW suite fit is?
No EW suite. The self-protection suite is identical to that of the IAR-330L Puma NATO: LWR/RWR sensors, chaff/flares dispensers as indicated by press.
Sorry if said before but is this for SAR use? and it looks like it can carry Sea Missiles aswel?
Yes. SAR, recon, transport, diver teams infiltration/exfiltration.
No ASM – in fact no weapons at all are carried.
The only ASM Romania has is the old P-21 (SS-N-2 Styx)
But having the same electro-optical sensor as the Puma SOCAT gunship, it can designate targets for laser-guided munitions launched from other platforms :diablo:

Romanian ex-Mig-21M/MF upgraded to Lancer C uses it
Actually our LancerC are fomer MiG-21 MF-75 subvariants, only one being an MF (attrition replacement), whereas LancerAs are former M/MF/MF-75s.
Here are the figures for the detection ranges of a fighter sized-target by the Elta EL/M-2032 installed on LancerC:
– Lookup: 35-55 NM
– Look-down: 30-45 NM
Bear in mind that the antenna had to be downsized in order to fit into the nosecone of the Fishbed. Also, the cone itself is new, from a different material on the Lancer C (black) while the Lancer A/B kept the old, dark green cone – it had something to do with the conductivity of the material.
In 2000 they ordered 24 Typhoons Tranche 2.
Reduced to 18 due to the budget shortages caused by the huge floods of summer 2001.
The new (socialist-green) government installed late last year said they would cancel the program all together (it was one of the highlights of their election campaign). once in power, they found out they can’t cancel the order without paying a lot of “domage et interets” so they reduced the order.
The variant I heard was 12 tranche 2 machines.
Getting both tr 1 and 2, new and used would be really dumb. They might as well add 6 or so MiG-21s for a hi-low mix with the Typhoons :diablo:
EDIT: sorry eagle, we posted at the same time, i didn’t see that you answered the question fully.
Does anybody have other images of Ivory Coast Pumas, apart from these two:
