Depends how busy you are going to be and what you want to do with it….Excel has a limitation of some 65,000 rows of data and 255 columns per worksheet and the number of worksheets limited by your PC memory. You could feasibly have one worksheet per aircraft type or per country unless you went mad in the US. It makes things difficult to bring the lot together and produce a decent listing, log or for checking.
My current employer uses Access which most decent PCs will have as standard and would enable you to do everything you need in one table and its fairly intuitive to set up your own reports and forms using the wizards.
I started off using Foxpro as that was what I used in my previous job and that is even more capable of doing reports and checking but does need some basic knowledge of programs to get you going.
Of the ready populated databases available for the spotter, I concluded that Aerodata’s Quantum plus has the better quality and most aircraft.
Pay your money and take your pick. Make sure that whatever you choose doesn’t tie you in the house.
Shame! Just imagine if BA had to close and MOL moved into LHR with the BA fleet on the cheap!
The world’s favourite airline…for real!
Where’s the tongue in cheek emoticon?
Why am I sat here watching this when I have a home to go to?
The website, like the aircraft, looks impressive but doesn’t do anything!
Shirley though, many people would not be flying now if there were no low cost carriers. Today you have a choice. And that availability of choice means many nore people are employed in the aviation transport industry.
I still look forward to a time when you can just turn up at an airport and board a plane much like you do at a railway station. It’s only history that has made air travel a ‘select’ option.
Personally, also, I like Ryanair’s break down of fees etc as it highlights the rip offs by government departments.
Now who is going to break down where the price of a litre of fuel goes?
Why, whenever theres a news item re Ryanair do we have to have the whole pros and cons dragged out again? Can’t we just discuss the actual news item?
Do other airlines charge booking fees for the use of credit or debit cards? Any others charge for selected cards?
Do we have an anniversary coming up of the Yellowjacks, Black Arrows or Blue Diamonds to commemorate? Yellow Hawks would be nice!
AA41 Paris to Chicago diverted in with a sick pax. Maybe what you saw…..Check http://avherald.com/
Could it be that Jackson has heard of a dam that’s going to be removed in the next couple of years?
The one thing we have now, which Black Kettle alluded to, is choice. I too am old enough to remember cartels by the flag carriers where you had perhaps a choice of two flag carriers but shared revenue. No price or service competition and no growth. Any international flights had to go through the major centres unless you were on a package (IT) flight. What the LCCs have done is provide alternatives in destinations, service and price.
If you don’t like Ryanair then you have a choice. There are many people that do and are willing to pay their pricing structures.
Although I argue for Ryanair I would still prefer to drive for a week away in Europe. It’s only the day trips and travelling over about 1500 miles that would necessitate flying and then I want it cheap as chips. Not interested in service, just get me there!
I don’t like to contradict a moderator but Flybe were rebranded as a low cost carrier in 2002, some years after Ryanair had started LCC operations. A distinct case of let’s follow the market trend!
If you’re looking at date of original founding then yes, I’ll agree.
As I understand the low cost model, Ryanair, and possibly easyjet, need fairly rapid turnover in their fleets so they’re not burdened by the costs of the heavy maintenance. It’s not just the expense of the maintenance check but the downtime of the aircraft. Keep the fleet young and active.
It’s probably still too early in the game. The manufacturers still have high levels of order backlog with few cancellations so far. If we run for another 6 or 12 months with the same level of new orders as we’ve seen over the past 12 months the manufacturers will have to reduce build rates and lay people off or take orders where they can get them.
From RYR or any airlines point of view, why pay more than you need? It has to be good business practice to order in the downturn.
Those of us that browse these forums from work during the week only, have no idea what is going on! Once a decision has been made will we be told what the decision refers to???
