We made our regular trip to see my favourite Yorkshire lass today and also our first viewing of the Nimrod, and Obviousley Lindy never fails to impress, but having never seen a Nimrod in the flesh so to speak, I was amazed at how huge the “bomb bay” doors were, and also the size of the (someone will correct me here) aerilons…(the flaps on the wings in my lamens terms). But getting back to Lindy…..I have a question about her, firstly im assuming the ejection seats were still operational for all of her srevice, but when the re-fuelling nozzle was added it looks as though its fitted over the ejection hatch cover, is this right ? and if so, how does the hatch blow out in the event of an ejection…..Also during our visit a couple of chaps had connected the generator (as I call it) up to the aircraft and it sounded as though it was working hard….what was it powering that was taking all that power ?….I apologise for my lamens terms :o:o

Quality pin sharp shots mate…If you dont mind could you tell me what sort of lens you were using and what settings do you use, ie speed, metering mode and focus etc etc…..however I try, I always end up getting the aircraft under-exposed….And to catch a shot of those Tornados at that speed, you desevre a medal…. I have a few front ends and a few rear ends, and some blurred ones 😮

What would you guys recommend to set the metering mode to on my 400D for taking shots of the aircraft, either center weighted or partial……in my lamens thoughts I am trying to get the best exposure on the aircraft and not the sky behind it 😮

The bit that got me the most was the part where Hugh Hunt got all emotional while sitting in the Lancaster

Dont know about you guys, but I feel I would do the same, Have read a few books about life in bomber command and the sacrifice they made recently, I find myself quite emotional when seeing the Lancaster….

I enjoyed it but I dont know about you chaps but was suprised at the pilots comments at the very end, something along the lines of

“we can show those englishmen we can hit it with the first shot!”

Im sure it wasnt but that could be taken the wrong way and sounds very disrespectful of the 617 squadrons sacrifice after all, as has been said before in earlier posts doing it under test conditions is one thing, doing it against a full on AA defence and the night is another !!!!

a memorial in London to the men of the RAF‘s Bomber Command who died in WW2.

Its in the wording, the memorial is to the men who died and NOT Horrors that were carried out !!!! I beleive however that the bombing was justified……as has been said They started it we (with the help of others) finished it…I wonder how different things would have been If the V1 & V2 weapons had killed more civillians as was planned, or if the Atom bomb had been develpoed first. Would Hitler have held them back becuase they were going to kill too many innocent people, In my humple opinion the answer is NO he would have used every single method he could to defeat England and its allies.

Sorry to hijack the thread but thats excellent how you have found info like that. My late uncle was in either 150 or 170 squadron at hemswell 1944-45 and thats all i know. Is there any publication or online record that can help me track down his or the squadrons activities or any info for that matter. My main problem is that I have no access to his war records at this time 🙁

for what its worth, I contributed to the 558 fund quite often, but this time im afraid I wont be, as its just going to be an annual “cash crisis” in my opinion. I have the greatest respect for the team for just getting the thing in the air against all the odds, but keeping her there was, in hindsight was a pipe dream.
The issue I have is the same as you guys, the salaries. I know that there will be hundreds of unpaid volounteers who have given their all the the cause, and its these guys I feel sorry for. When the projects top men can draw such a huge amount from the pot amazes me, they claim their love for the vulcan in the press etc etc, but at the same time are killing it off by draining cash out of it……they are just taking the pi## out of the unpaid staff. I am so glad that I and more importantly my young son got the chance to see a real jet bomber flying, and for that to all those hard working people (not on over inflated salaries) that put the aircraft into the skies I for one salute you.

Seems such a waste and shortsighted idea to scrap what has more or less been finished, and would provide such a usefull role in our defence.
I went to take a pic of The Vulcan at Woodford back in September 2007, and a Nimrod, was stood outside, I dont know if it was a offcial run out, but the guys towed it to the bottom of the runway and around right in front of us at the fence. while I took a few shots and they wernt bothered in the slightest. By the way can anyone tell me what the red “CIRCUIT DIAGRAM” type markings are for on the tailfin.

    The Wellington Bomber BBC documentary

Sorry if its been posted before, But I only saw the “Wellington Bomber” programme for the first time last night and thought it excellent, especially as I “was” very narrow minded towards the Lancaster, and had never really learned much about the wellington, and the big part in played in Bomber Command, until I watched this particular programme that is. A very emotional ending too, with the words of the veteran, and the dedication at the very end declaring of his passing…..

English Heritage hold all of the Old RAF aerial photo’s from 1945 onwards, you can order them (for a fee ) and they will send you a copy on disc, if anyone is interested?

Fascinating look at my local area in 1941-45. But my house is in a blacked out area, Does that mean they have no picture of that section of land
