It’s actually spelled ‘Grach’ (meaning Rook).

The Su-27 is nicknamed ‘Zhuravlik’ (meaning Crane (the bird))

Tu-160 is ‘Beliy Lebed’ (White Swan)

    There are lots of others……..

    Ken

Thanks Ken. The Tu-160 nickname is a new one to me. It suites the Tu-160 better than the NATO version.

Thank Captain Obvious, but may I tell you a secret : the Cold War is over.
So no need to use OTAN code names.

    Example :
    – Sukhoy Su-25 “Gratch”
    – Mil Mi-24V “Krokodyl”
    – …
    So simple.

I knew that the Su-25 was called the “Gratch” meaning hook from a book I am currently reading, but any idea what the Su-27 is called?

    The… What?
Her name is Tupolev Tu-22M3, and it is the only one.

The Tupolev Tu-22M3 is also known as the Backfire to NATO. And as for my other favorite Russian aircraft that is the Su-27/30/34/35S Flanker.

The word Awesome doesn’t cover it!!

Certainly the Backfire has to be near the top of my list of favorite Russian planes.

I don’t think the Army Air Corp will be retiring their Apaches anytime soon considering that the US Army have just upgraded their’s to Guardian standard, so a full replacement would not appear until the middle of next decade.

Anyone know what the use of the mast mounted radar is on the Z-19? Looks awful like the Longbow radar on the Apache.

WZ-2000 became China’s first unmanned combat aircraft 2014-1-10 10:06 Source: Guizhou Daily

the source is not wantchinatimes.com, but is Guizhou Daily

What range will the WZ-2000 have? Will it be like the Global Hawk or Predator/Reaper.

More importantly who would own the Gripens that are being rented? Sweden or Brazil?

A bit dubious is the claim that the burning duration of its rocket motor is 100 sec. Either it’s a typo or we are looking at a true IIR guided long range AAM…

I would wait until we get proof about the true capability’s of this new missile, otherwise :eek:

You can add CALF to that mix, the Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter. That was supposedly going to be the USAFs replacement program for the F-16. If they left the three exiting programs separate form one another don’t you all think think that the three separate fighters would have been in service by now?

If it wasn’t for the mighty Avenger cannon on the A-10 then the Su-25 Frogfoot would be my favorite CAS aircraft.

It looks like a very big target hopefully it won’t flop and give bad press like its cousin that went down in Iran. Stealth is a cool but in a high level jamming environment with clutter and noise I still believe a manned aircraft is a more reliable asset.

I couldn’t agree with you more, give me a F-22A and F-35A/B/C over the RQ-180 any day of the week.

er, you might have forgotten a “0” in your turn radius… should any aircraft make a turn (meaning 180° ?) with such a small radius at Mach3, it would have to pull an insane amount of G’s

Okay thanks for that, my mistake, I should have checked my SR-71 books a little more closely before I started to type.
