A fairly comprehensive review can be found here:

Scroll down for some DVD/BluRay side-by-side examples.

    Seems like a goodun.

Apparently the Tom Hanks Steven Spielberg mini series on the 8th Air Force is ramping up. Perhaps Pink Lady is being dusted off with some HBO money? The series is currently titled Masters of The Air. https://twitter.com/johnorloff Is the head writer’s twitter feed.

Modern film makers? The director is 64 years old Robert Zemeckis who has been making movies since the 70s.

I have a price list that was current as of 2012 with contact details on it if that’s of use? You have a pm Whitley 🙂

That does possibly look like the same “early” style exhausts. Hard to be sure from that angle but the first chamber does look quite a bit longer. Cheers. I’d be just as interested to know what the story is behind these early attempts.

Off topic, but you sound like the man to answer this : what happened to the Schneider Trophy ? Was it melted down or is it sitting somewhere gathering dust? Two birds kissing, very racy trophy indeed!

Google should be your friend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schneider_Trophy#/media/File:Schneider_Trophy_Science_Museum_London.jpg

To my eye it seem that the exhaust shown in the two b&w photos of K9795 I posted above is different to the colour example on the right of P9374. Both seem to show the familiar Triple Ejector (nozzle type). However the stubs seem to come out at steeper angles than the exhaust on P9374, even more so with the front chamber. I don’t have Andy’s book to hand (it’s in a box since moving house) so perhaps the matter is discussed in there, but I’m just surprised no one has answered with an affirmative or even countered my claim suggesting I’m crackers and seeing things.
The patent Schneiderman posted suggests that the exhaust on the early Spits might have been an intermediate design before the commonly shown Triple Ejector Exhausts – not exactly like what is shown in the patent, but not the final design seen on P9374 either.

PS. If this is too firmly in the rivet counting arena then I’ll get my coat 🙂

I think that patent may point to the answer here. I think these early Spits had a slightly different shaped exhausts than we’re used to. One difference I think I can see with the patent and the first photo on the left is that the last two outlets merge in to the last chamber independently rather than converging first, which the patent suggests. But the more steeply angled rake is very similar.

I was hoping there might be a bit more information out there on this apparent early design? Or indeed for someone to suggest I’m seeing things.

That issue can be picked up here: http://www.cinefex.com/backissues/issue44.htm

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… and no doubt will go on saying it in these threads. The reality of CGI is ****** all to do with CGI. It’s how the directors and producers want to use it and how they direct the CGI artists. With model work and live action the camera is highly restricted with what’s possible. Which explains why you have entirely unnoticeable CGI and then very noticeable CGI. That’s certainly the case when considering big budget films like Red Tails.

Also, being someone who has done both model work and CG I can tell you that becoming skillful enough to work on high end CG is harder. Creating a realistic shot in CG is harder. The difference and reason why we choose CGI is often down to the limitations of practical work (usually scale is the issue) and the ability to iterate the work. Both of those factors often make it cheaper too.

Didn’t have the right lens or camera, but managed to make the best of it.

I’m not sure you could call Iron Maiden a pop group anymore, or ever. Mike, Bruce Dickinson is almost as old as you are (yes, very old indeed) 😉

I just watched it. A shame it was so ridiculous, it makes a lot of silly claims. The bit where they ‘buzzed’ the Prime Minister’s house made me spit my coffee out! Fairly entertaining in a cartoon version of reality. The visual effects, model work and CGI were the most realistic thing about it.

There is a rather excellent book on the subject made by our very own David Gibbings just a few years ago http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fairey-Rotodyne-David-Gibbings/dp/0752449168/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392913218&sr=8-1&keywords=rotodyne+gibbings
