Thanks Tony. You don’t happen to have any examples of this in a Hurricane do you? I’ve been scouring the internets and can’t find anything myself…

Good stuff – but the last one was a belter! Right combination of visuals and music in my opinion, especially that airfield bombing sequence and the dogfight over the sea.

That’s a great example that it’s all down to the Director or Producer. CG lets you do anything but it’s only convincing if there’s some restraint and good choices made.

Go back to Pearl Harbor. Some shots are utterly convincing and others aren’t. The ones that aren’t are very likely because the camera or planes are doing stupid things. That’s ****** all to do with the software or CG artist.

As an example, Flyboys is often held up as an example of awful CGI work. What isn’t really known is that the CGI company (MPC if I remember correctly) had attached telemetry and motion captured real WWI planes to get the flight characteristics down.
Problem was, that wasn’t very exciting for the Producers so they had to throw that all out and animate it like a cartoon….

I think there’s room for a retelling. People of a certain age might like the ’69 film and they watch that and think they know what the Battle of Britain was all about.
But then everyone thought they knew what war films were all about until Saving Private Ryan showed up. It single handedly relit everyone’s interest and also brought it to a new generation in an arguably more authentic way than ever before.

Sadly I don’t think Red Tails is going to do that, it looks like it’s missing that “edge”… maybe a Battle of Britain film is needed?

There are different shades of green as well, here is mine, 1937 Dated

Looking to match the colour at the moment as I am repairing some damage to the bezel.

The oil temp is the Orange (ish) one.

    Good luck with the project.

    Ant.

Thanks Ant. That RAD temps gauge doesn’t even look green or blue! Looks like a faded orange!

Brilliant, thanks! It’ll help with the comparison if you have one of the others in the photo too (boost, oil or whatever) so we could compare to the b&w image.

    Many thanks!

Thanks chaps – now the trick is to figure out whether the Whirlwind had blue or green ones. I guess either would be correct…

Whitley, you wouldn’t be able to post a photo of your blue bezel when you get a chance would you?

Just looked at my Hurri, it has oddly yellow oil p, rad temp is more green than blue. Looking at your pic, the oil p is likely the bright yellow as featured on mine, but that is a later gauge (1943), earlier were same as the oil temp (see my spit cockpit)
    Pic of spitty here

Thanks Tony. I have this picture (below) of a bright orange OIL temp gauge, which is probably the closest shade I’ve seen to the b&w photo I have up there.

The different shades for port and stbd are still a mystery.

Also, as Mr Blue Sky mentioned, we’re led to believe the RAD temp gauges were blue…. but all I’ve ever seen are green.

luminous paint does not glow (or appear to) in daylight…as the daylight out shines it if you see what I mean….it was and still is a bleached bone colour paint.

Bleached bone eh? But not brown like they show up now? Do you know what colour they would have glowed?

    Foam padding?

    Fat lot of good!!

Looks like you had a very close-up view. Is that what happens when you try and kiss a Hurricane while landing? An understandable urge but bad timing perhaps. :dev2:

CGI is just a tool. It’s as realistic or as cartoony as you want it. Most realistic CGI goes unnoticed and unappreciated.

It gets noticed and hated when you’ve got a director or producer more interested in the ticket sales above all else.

If you’ve got the cash and the integrity CGI can look utterly real.
