Please don’t respond to flamers and aggravate problem. Please use the report to mod feature on his post (exclamation point in red triangle.)

    Thank you.

I’m way ahead of you Golden Dragon. I’ve already written to the mods myself on this matter and your attitude. You’re more than welcome to put forth your own opinion, and I’m sure the mods will review things and make what they deem to be the appropriate decision.

In the meantime, I would hope that your irrational rants do not fan the flames of racism and xenophia by denigrating Indians (which I’m not) or any other group.

If that was the case, why didnt the US just put the Nuclear deal on hold until after the MRCA selection process was complete, just to be on the safe side?

The US can quietly sit on the nuclear agreement, without performing, until after the MRCA selection and purchase contract is signed.

    No quid……no pro quo.

Talking about 2050 is totally meaningless, it’s interesting to look back at predictions of the world in 50 years made in 1956, weekend trips to Jupiter, anti gravity flight, a end to disease and hunger, limitless free energy blah blah blah, and that’s before we get onto the politics of the cold war! 🙂 .

Dude, my parents had a 1962 World Book Encyclopedia that if you looked up “Vietnam” and read it you would’ve thought that it was a peaceful country; all the images of slavery showed smiling blacks; and stated that by 1980 we would have cars that hovered.

    WHERE IS MY HOVER-CAR??????

K-19? One UNLUCKY boat. Man, if ordered to serve on her, I would’ve just started walking to the base stockade.

    Movie was ok.

I guess a mini sub may be good for some insertion of specops type of ops. And perhaps to do some intell, or check underwater cables/sensors, or do just basic science.

But as an attack weapon? C’mon! 😡

To put it very simply, a small sub has these following alarming weaknesses:

    -laughabale sensors and systems
    -very small weapons/vehicles loadout
-tiny crew who will tire out very quickly
-zero survivability (it can’t take a hit)
    -no speed
    -no range

Apart from these, I guess a mini sub may be a nice little toy to put-put around the shallows.

HK_Dragon, thank you very, very much!

I really like this picture of the three L-15 models in different livery.

I dunno there Golden Dragon. It could be three L-15 models, or it could also be a model of an L-15 along with a model of an M-346 and a Yak 130. :diablo:

Iran also got some additional Fencers from Russia. From what I read, they were quite pleased with the performance of the Fencers.

…Iran is just pleased to be able to buy anything out there that flies!! 😮

    IIRC

Italy’s Garibaldi aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1985. She replaced the ageing ASW helicopter cruisers Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio (Andrea Doria class, 1958). Due to political considerations she did not receive her Harriers until 1989.

The Principe de Asturias aircraft carrier has been in service with the Spanish Navy since 1988. It’s predecessor Dedalo was an ex-USN light carrier that was acquired in 1967 following a major overhaul and conversion to an ASW carrier. Dedalo operated only ASW helicopters until several Harriers (AV-8A)were first embarked in 1976.

Operating a helicopter carrier isn’t that different from operating large helicopter cruisers. So, as far as Harrier operations are concerned, Spain would seem to have only 13 years of operational experience over the Italian counterparts.

    IIRC

Correct on your math. Nevertheless, in a matter of speaking, the difference in operational experience is huge.

A little correction to your post though, the first AV8 ops on DEDALO occurred in 1972 when UK test Pilot John Farley executed a series of test to verify the capability of DEDALO’s wooden deck to operate AV8’s. The first Armada pilots began to train for fixed wing ops with the USN in 1974 and transitioned to AV8 ops with VMAT-203. The 8th Esq. stood up for ops in DEDALO in 1976 (they did loose their first AV8 during during the delivery trip while over US territory), nevertheless the pilots had already racked up many hours operating with the USMC and onboard US ships.

To this day training of Spanish Harriers pilots occurs under the tutelage of the USN/USMC, and there is a Spanish naval aviator on exchange assignment with VMAT-203. Also, since 1976s a USMC pilot has exchanged with the Spanish Navy AV8 unit–there is also an HSL rotorhead in exchange, and there used to be a SWO type (my most rewarding assignment!!) :p but I heard some time ago that they had discontinued the exchange of surface officers. I sincerely hope that my tenure in Rota was not cause of that. :dev2:

Of course KDX-3 will carry torpedo countermeasures. It just won’t have the Black Dragon TASS installed. Stupid, but money problems. It might change once there is some breathing room in the funding, but from what I’ve heard, KDX-3 won’t have a TASS.

Atago, I haven’t a clue. I heard it won’t, but that seems odd, even if Atago is a primarily AAW ship.

KD2 does not seem to have the Nixie.

Regardless of which one looks better, and since I’ve sailed on board PdA I’m sort of biased towards her, :p , the existence of a couple of short-range SAM launcher’s or four boxed ssm’s is not of any tactical importance.

The key to these two vessels is the embarked Air Group: The Armada’s aviators have over 30 years of operational experience more than the MM’s boys.

That settles the issue of which one is actually more capable.

Cost alone (maintenance, crew) makes it unfeasible. If the $$ was available to the Aeronavale, they would probably spend it on a 4th and 5th E-2C, rather than on some old S-3’s for tanking. RAFALE can tank, a la F-18E, and in most future ops CdG’s air group will probably rely on land-based KC’s, much like the USN does today.

BTW, the deck could easily handle S-3 ops, specially after the CDG waist had to be extended to make E-2 ops safe.

    PAYLOAD, PAYLOAD, PAYLOAD.

Have you ever seen a pic of a naval Flanker, loaded, taking off with the stobar? Why not? ‘Cause it can’t be done. Immagine loading a Super Hornet and taking off using stobar. It would go off the deck and………….gulp!! Right to the bottom. Same for the Flanker.

But all those guys who said that a catapult is a simple system are talking nonsense. The steam cat is probably one of the most complex pieces of machinery in a CV.

    How complicated?

–The Russkies could not master it, could not steal the technology, gave up, and settled on the stobar stuff.

–The French equipped CdG with two cats they purchased from the US. France quickly realized that attempting to design, test, and produce to cats was utterly, ridicously, expensive. So they bought them from us.

even KD-1 destroyer has TASS. and did you say Nixie?

Yes, I said “Nixie”. As in SLQ-25A “Nixie” torpedo countermeasures.

The Atago construction pics have two “Nixie” ports on the starboard side of the stern plate for the “Nixie” fish, but the ship appears to lack a TASS “a**hole”.

In contrast, the KD’s appear to have a TASS “a**hole” but do not have “Nixie” ports.

p.s. For you non-navy types, in the USN we referr to the TASS exit port as the “a**hole”.

….the Koreans in another thread are starting to already bash it with a bunch of “KDXIII” is the superior vessel, etc., etc., etc, mickey mouse.

Is she going to carry a towed array? I saw the Nixie ports, but not a towed array “a**hole”.

This is a millitary forum, you can keep the social issues to yourself or go discuss it somewhere else.

Sure, why don’t we discuss the severe lack of significant rotary lift in the PakAF? Maybe post some more pics of the foreign helicopters that recently were gettin’ jiggy wit it all over Pakistan? Oh wait…..how ’bout all the aid that was flown by the F-16 boys out of Sardogha?
