After seeing all the recent Czech Air Force pics of the Gripen and L-159 I got to wondering……why haven’t more people bought this airplane?
It seems to offer some great capabilities for a reasonable price.
I was browsing the net (including Aero’s website), and I’m rather taken aback by the variety of muntions it can carry as well as the capabilities it has to train pilots for the world’s most advanced fighters.
I hope it gets some export orders because I hate to see the ones that were put into storage by the Czechs to go to waste.
Are any countries even considering the L-159 (A or B models) at this point?
Also, can anyone tell me about the 20-mm cannon pod it can carry? Who makes it and how many rounds does it carry?
ZPL-20 Plamen was developed by Czech design company PROTOTYPA Brno and is a product of a traditional Czech armaments company ZVI Vsetín. It can carry 210 cartridge pieces maximally.

Ex Czech Air Force L159A (over 10 pieces) almost for sure will be sold to Nigeria, Nigerian government has asked for serious Czech government offer in November. At same time Indonesia has announced its interest to buy new L159B from Aero Vodochody. Venezuela wanted to buy L159A and B in the middle of 2006, but Czech government restricted Aero to do the selling for political reason. So there is hight chance to sell L159B to Izraele and Egypt, because L159 selling can be financed by US military support program (even thouth there is less than 50% equipment of US origin in L159A and B, owing to former Boeing financial share in Aero). Further chance of L159A or B is in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, Thailand. Albania has a interest in used ex Czech Air Force L159A (but no money)
there is not only L159 plane, L159 is whole system with simulators, support, logistic and diagnostic systems developed by Czech companies E-COM, Retia, Aero etc.

Great reply and thanks for the Hind Image…!
What additional information do you have on these three events?
I know only month of the incident – January 1970, Václav Bartoš with MiG-19S (made in Aero Vodochody) got the order to shoot down nonspecified German helicopter. According to later investigation (the info is from http://www.vrtulnik.cz) Bartoš switch on photocamera but not cannons. After the flight Bartoš said to an investigation commision that the cannons were disfunctional, but during investigation dialog Bartoš burst out that he doesn´t have a look at falling dead people from the helicopter. Commision made the resolution, if Bartoš switch the weapons, the helicopter would be shot down for sure. So Bartoš was kicked off from army, despite he loved flying, and the wonder is that he wasn´t arrested.
I am not sure, but Václav Bartoš is on the picture with high possibility
About Mi-4 and F-102 incident and Mi-24D crash later, I must search some source…
rumcajs, you are my personal hero 😀
😀
Dont expect anything good from PENTA. Its financial shark with not always clear activities and it cant see nothing more than profit. I think that PENTA bought Aero mainly because Aero owns test airfield in very lucrative position near Prague.
well Penta is a financial group only, and the chiefs of PENTA said about deliberation about the stop of L159 production a month after the sale. But next month they was talking about support L159 production and selling on the other hand. Anyway Panta must (according to sellinf contract with Czech state) preserve aircraft production in Aero Vodochody, and must preserve support and service for L159 and L-39 up to 2025.
Sri Lanka´s Mi-24P in the Czechlands (repairing), sorry if repost
and I know a few about further incidents.
10.3. 1953, 11:04 pilot J. Šrámek with S-102 (Mig-15) shot down F-84E of Brown, W.G.A of 53th FBS
10.3. 1954 pilot Z. Volenam with S-103 (Mig-15bis) damaged a US P2V Neptune (somewhere I have large article about that but I would have to search when anybody wants details)
12.8. 1954 some US training plane was shot down but no more info
12.10.1959, Italian F-84F on Hradec Králové air base, the photo was took in secret by one Czech pilot. Some lieutnant De Mayo lost orientation over the Alps and was intercepted by MiG-19s of Czech pilots J. Faix and J. Bureš over Czech-German border, compeled to land on Hradec Králové air base. He was totally confused and his the first reaction to the first word what he heard – “Czechoslovakia” after landig was typical Italian(according to eyewitness) “Mamma mia, mamma mia!!! Madonna mia, Madonna mia!!! Can I send the telegram to my mother that I´m ok!?
23.5. 1964 attack of two US F-102 on Czechoslovak Mi-4 what took the photos of german border area from Czechoslovak territory, but US fighters didn´t fire only several attacks by manoeuvres
january 1970 Václav Bartoš pilot of Mig-19 got the order to fire on german hellicopter, he switched on photocamera but not cannons and refused to fire. He was released from army.
supposedly on the end of the 1970s was shot down some US chopper by L-39ZA but again no more info
12.9.1985 crash of Czechoslovak Mi-24D of Tóth, Horák, Melíšek crew during manoeuvring against US AH-1S in montain border area. The Hind fell down due to air eddy behind a mountain. Crew survived.
What info do you have on these events?
20 April 1984, two Czech MiG-23 Floggers fire rockets at a U.S. Army, 2nd ACR, AH-1S Cobra. The Cobra had strayed 1,500 meters across the Czech border.
28 September 1985, a Czech L-39 Albatross fired rockets at an U.S. Army AH-1S Cobra on the Czech-West German border, north of Freyung.
Thanks!
well the first cause: not Czech and not MiG-23 and not rockets, but one Czechoslovak MiG-21MF of pilot capitan Doležal and one MiG-21F-13 of major Neumaier of 5th fighter regiment from Plzeň-Líně AB attack US AH-1S what spies on new communication cable works of Czechoslovak air defence system on direction Nýrsko – Domažlice. The Migs catch the Cobra near Domažlice town in about 300 m flying height and cpt. Doležal start to fire with cannon. He misses but the burst warns US pilot and he quickly runs to 40m flying height and flies away accros the border. MiGs pilots have a lot of problems to get out from mountain terrain and not to cross the border. The fact is that 2mach fighter is not suitable for fight against small helicopter in a mountain terrain in low flying height but the pilots was rebuked for the failure even chief of regiment is talking about both pilots release. General Štorka, chief of 10th Air Army, stands up for the pilots and confirms assertion that a successful fight against small helicopter in low flying height with MiG-21 is impossible, and protecs the pilots from penalty.
MiG-21MF of cpt Doležal

Lockheed Martin.
ah I see, So LM never have a stake in Aero but Boeing. About Boeing above. At all almost all US companies made only disasters in traditional and old military Czech factories, for example Boeing in Aero or Terex in Tatra. Thanx for God, Boeing was kicked off in 2004 (Czech state paid 2 crowns to Boeing for leaving and had to do recovery plan for Aero), Terex went out from Tatra in September 2006.
Bwt not long time ago some US company bought ERA Pardubice – producer of VĚRA passive locators, so I hope maybe not another disaster….
Very nice pics, takes a while to get them even on B/B, but worth the wait.
Tell me, doesn’t LM own a stake in Aero now? If so, why don’t they market the L-39/59/159 better?
my repost from another thread
Today Aero is starting producing of new Sikorski S-76D (up to day have produced S-76C++), Aero prepare producing of new own plane Ae-270 Ibis, Aero is starting centre wing boxes of C-27J Spartan production , it produces emergency doors for Airbus, F-18 gundoors for Boeing and produces L-159T1 Albatros II two-seater trainers for Czech Air Force (two-seater version similar to B version, the first will be delivered in January 2006), 4 months ago Czech government and Aero signed contract for CzAF L-159 modernisation plan and service support for CzAF L-159 and L-39 fleet up to 2025.
This week Czech government and Aero announce official L-159A selling offer for Nigeria on Nigerian request from last week. 14 days ago Indonesian goverment have announced interest in new L-159B advanced trainers for its air force and “eastern version” of L-159 is prepared (with Ukrainian engine and French electronic systems). Aero had financial problems, but Czech government resolved that and Aero was sold in october 2006 to private company PENTA, and it want and support military and civilian program as well). Boeing was kicked out from Aero in 2004 for 2 Czech crowns (sic!), thanx for God. BWT in India and SAR L-159B was evaluated as better and more suitable then Hawk, but in SAR won gripen over F-18 (hawk was offered with gripen as set, Albatros II with F-18) and for fear of possible US embargo or obstruction L-159 was refused in India ( about 40% equipment is made in USA, it´s reason for preparing “eastern version” with Ukrainian engine and French electronic systems). And in the middle of this year Czech government answered “no” to Aero´s request for selling L-159 to Venezuela (“eastern version”). So L-159 problem is modern level, NATO compatibility and US made equipment, that is why Aero want to develop version with French electronics and Ukrainian engine. The second problem is that unstable contries or US enemies have interest in L-159. The chiefs of Aero still say that they have a lot of interesteds but L-159 need to market success, so maybe Nigeria and Indonesia interest will be the start of L-159 success.
bwt L-39 and L-59 are in production no more. Only L-159 and Ae-270
bwt what is LM?
