China already settled its borders with Russia and Kazakhstan.

To add to that, some of the claims mentioned such as Sakhalin, never was a part of China, nor was it part of any land treaties between Russia and the Qing. Tuva is a touchier issue because it was conquered by the Mongols and administered by them who in term were under the Qing.. but the Tuvans are their own seperate ethnic group who once had a short lived independant country in the 40s, before being annexed, that was called Tannu-Tuva.

Unfortunately there are many ultra nationalistic Chinese youth who want all of the Russian far east (when the lands lost were only Primorye, parts of Khabarovsk, and Amur) while there are lots of paranoid Russians, both of whom seeming to want conflict 😡

    Very nice!

I see a potential center of gravity problem with weapons and external fuel loaded. Also the landing gear position (main) might be too far aft which may increase take off distances and aerobraking on landing may not be possible either.

Looks great though any more pictures?

there’s tons here and a link to more on that same page

great analysis Mixtec and Aurel, very interesting reads. I do agree that it is quite odd to add a fin near the airbrakes though.

I thought the new administration cancelled it?

how much technology was Sukhoi, Saab and Dassault willing to transfer? All of it?

    question:

Between the MiG-29 and M2K, which is actually being used more.. I’ve heard alot of negative reports on both.. with the MiG-29 having low sortie rates and are reaching the end of their operational life, while the M2K is so sensitive to fly, that pilots are worried about any little trouble, which could result in expensive repairs (although the M2K is much cheaper to operate.. spares for it tend to get very expensive, as you stated)

    Horace,

some thoughts on the coloring of the aircraft. It seems that the way the IAF is painting their combat aircraft these days.

I think the Radome should be a lighter shade of grey in comparison to the rest of the body, it looks that way with the Su-30MKI at least.

Hey Burgerboy- Noone here is complaining about all the Pampa posts, and the K-8 is certainly more relevent to the Pampa since it will be in opositon to Indias trainer.

PLA- Thanks for the info, can you tell me if Pakistan has already started production on the K-8? And thanks for the specs Wachy.

not sure which one you wanted, but I’m assuming you want the one for the K-8

Ukrainian AI-25TL turbofan (on the K-8 and certain versions of the L-39C)
3,792 lbs., Ukrainian Progress, Ivchenko AI-25TL. Twin shaft bypass turbofan engine. Bypass ratio 1.983

engine overhaul life seems to be 4,000 hours
HuiTong’s site states that China has built their own engine which is essentially the same.

    Wachensomething,
Your sentiment is regrettable. He meant T37… .

don’t read more into what I wrote. I simply stated that there’s no T-38s there. Whether or not he knew that there wasnt, or if he meant to type the T-37 is something only he would know. In the past he didn’t seem to know who exactly used the T-38, so I simply assumed that he could be off on this one. There is no offense here and I responded to his request for basic stats.
in any case I re-edited the post and there is no need to resort to that level.

With the recent RAF collision incident over Turkmenistan and the possibility of it being a MiG-29, I’ve decided to ressurect this thread as I finally found a picture of their MiG-29s flying!

well its not like i picked up me views just from websites either. i have a number of south korean friends who really suprised when i first met them with just how much they disliked, even dispised the japanese, and they were suprisingly friendly to me considering the fact that china fought against SK in the korean war. (and its not like these koreans were old either, most are just in their late teens and early twenties).

with a large group of people there will always be groups that hold different groups within it that group, but it seems straige to have such a different spectrim.

Not too strange if one studies the conditions that the Koreans face now and in the past..

For example the American entertainment media influence and anti-Americanism with the young people versus Japanese entertainment media influence..

right now, who has troops stationed in the country that has large bases in an over crowded capitol, and lots of controversey over criminal incidents between foreign soldiers and civilians?

if there were no Americans stationed there but the same amount of American media influence.. how do you think the Koreans will view the Americans then?

furthermore, the older generation grew up during a time where Japanese pop influence was much weaker than now, so there is very few things that can appeal to them to outweigh the past.

A large percentage of the young Koreans I know and Korean forums I go to that are frequented by Korean youths show a strong interest in Japan, despite past histories.. There are still a significant amount of youths who are anti-Japan, they’re common..but the numbers have been dwindling down.

For example, one of my Korean teachers told me of the story when she first went to Japan. She said she couldn’t believe she was in the “land of the enemy”.. but after a while she ended up loving them.

As for the Anti-Chinese sentiments..I believe it also has some roots in long standing distrust of their bigger neighbor.

When I was living in Beijing for a while, I had a Korean girlfriend at the time, whose family would frequently say things like “don’t eat that way, that’s how Chinese people eat”, and other negative stereotypes (i’m neither Chinese or korean btw). The feelings were the same with the other Koreans in Beijing that i had to encounter (as I was at the time encouraged not to eat or shop in any Chinese areas..which simply was a waste).

Speaking of generational gaps..Japan also has a major one between the older generation and younger generation. And like Korea, the previous generations had to endure the harsh “nation building” processes and working conditions while the new ones benefit from the “fruits of their labor” and live during a time of much improved prosperity. As a result, the domestic conditions and atmosphere they grow up in is significantly different which results in their outlook in life being different than that of their parents.

well SKs also love american culture, does that lessen their anti-american views?

there is a subtle but significant different between liking the culture and liking people.

the main reason that SKs (and chinese and pretty much all the people of SE asia) dislike the japanese is not that they hate the race, per sa, they hate the japanese for what the japanese troops did during WWII, and they dispise the fact that the japanese government is trying to whitewash history and is refusing to own up and appologise properly for what they have done.

while few SKs will say, ‘ i want to kill japanese’, most would like to beat the japanese (at pretty much anything and everything), and a significant number would not be displeased at the prospect of of SK military beating the hell out of the JSDF. however most SKs will never agree to a war with japan because of what is on the line.

so you see, there is a subtle difference between wanting to fight someone and actually agreeing to and being commited to a fight with that someone.

as for friction between china and SK. well which two nations on earth dont have friction between them? there will always be minor differences, but i seriosuly doubt these differences will ever be allowed to develop into a major spat between the two nations ans peoples.

I’m sorry but you still fail to grasp the generational gap. I grew up in a Korean community and have been to the country several times.. what you’ve described mostly reflects on the older generation. To put it simply..the younger generation cares less about Japan or China in general and hates the US the most.. however if it was between Japan and China.. I guarantee you that they would actually like China the least in comparison with Japan. There are quite a bit who are anti-Chinese. Furthermore, even the older generation that is anti-Japanese will tend to agree that China has the potential to be a much worser “threat” to them than Japan at the moment. The younger generation also feels similarly as they’ve grew up beyond the anti-Japanese era, and into an era where japan is unlikely to be a threat..but China is, especially with a strong economy, military and numerous border and historical claims.

ultimately, I think it’ll be hard for either you or me to really prove who hates who more unless we both go out and do some mass survey together..
but here are some pages in regards to anti-Chinese views in Korea

you are also ignoring the obvious racial tensions between SK and japan, their governments might like to paint a picture of solidarity, but the poeple of SK would much rather fight japan then china.

Plawolf, I will have to respectfully disagree with you here. I’ve spent quite a deal of time with Koreans from South Korea and YanBian (the autonomous korean area in N.E China).. and there certainly is a very strong generational gap between the current young generation and the older generations.. while the older generation still harbors resentment towards Japan and are Pro-American.. the younger generation is the complete opposite. They did not have to grow up through the military dictatorships, or through the nationalistic ideal of working hard for poor pay in order to achieve progress.. etc.. they grew up when S.Korea was economically strong and its living standards were already raised..

Many of the newer generation fully embrace Japanese pop-culture, mimic japanese style and to some extent fashion, etc. Infact nowadays the reverse is happening, with Japan beginning to embrace Korean pop-culture, etc.. the media influence between the two have been growing and is quite strong. On the other hand, these same young generation tend to be anti-American, not to mention that the recent controversey over Koguryo’s history definitely left a “sour taste” of China to this generation of Koreans. Even the Yanbian koreans surprisingly did not harbor much resentment to the Japanese (not saying they have no resentment, but it is much less than others tend to make believe).

If China continues to press the Koguryo issue (regardless of whoever it belonged to), it will only worsen China’s image to the Koreans.

I wonder what makes them so certain it was a “MiG”?

in anycase..off the top of my head..

Turkmenistan does have several MiG-29s and 23’s.. but I don’t know if the latter is in storage or used.. they also have a couple of Frogfoots.. but I suppose it pretty much narrows down the type of aircraft possibly involved.
