I definitely agree with ya there..

however as far as multi-role is concerned..it would still appear that the light weight Gripen and the F-16s still have the advantage of being multi-role.. as compared to the Typhoon which is still undergoing trials, and the Rafale still in the process of completing A2G trials as well.

Clark, Clinton, Edwards, Bush Jr (if you consider Texas part of the south, but not his father who is from elsewhere), carter, dole, are among some off the top of my head that are from the south.

Or are there exceptions which prevented Britain from getting aid from the other treaty members?

perhaps because Falklands is in the south atlantic?

I would say that probably doesn’t really hold true today..as the MKI and the MKK are better than the capability of the Su-30s the RuAF uses.. and once Yemen (and possibly Algeria?) receives its MiG-29SMTs, it’ll be better than the MiG-29s Russia has as well.

if I remember correctly, both designs came out around the same time.. it’s probably more of a similar solution to similar needs.

Here’s a REAL pic of the M-346, the first roll out (the picture posted earlier here was the old Yak-130 variant)

    http://www.flug-revue.rotor.com/FRheft/FRH0308/FR0308d1.JPG

notice the fixed refuelling probe.. based on paper stats, the M-346 is the fastest subsonic advance trainer and perhaps the most agile.

I couldn’t find a cockpit photo of it, but here’s one of it’s counterpart the Yak-130D’s cockpit, looks pretty modern

for one thing, these trainers are not all directly comparable with each other… you got a straight wing trianer like the MiG-AT and a combat jet in the Golden Eagle..

but as to your question, you can eliminate the MAKO because chances of it being produced are very slim.

I think the Golden Eagle would make a good choice for those who need an advance trainer and a light supersonic fighter at the same time (particularly F-5 users).

the M-346 looks a bit more promising than the Yak-130D.. Aermacchi has really re-did the structure of the M-346..the two aircraft look very different now (and the pic you used is not the M-346), there’s a more recent one if you do a search here.

I’m pretty sure that one was a mock up.

Hmm actually many of the former Communist states still have an authoritarian leader.. pretty much All of the ex Soviet Central Asian states and Belarus comes to mind.. Yugoslavia’s leader was also another one until NATO intervention.

You’re wrong, I’m afraid. It only appeared towards the end of the show and it was easy to miss, but LM displayed a very nice T-50 model in full UAE colours at the 2003 Dubai show. I was there every day and a pic is attached. Remember, I said model – it wasn’t a full size mock-up like the Hawk and it was a hasty addition to the LM line-up, but the fact that it was there at all was significant.

As for your other two quotes, they really just underline what I said earlier.

“A BAE official says the UAE is looking at more Hawk aircraft” – well of course he did, that’s his job. But he said LOOKING, not buying. I could give you a list of 12 countries that BAE sees as sales prospects for the Hawk, they are all looking too. The UAE is nowhere near the top of that list and is not seen as a significant short- or near-term prospective customer. And come on, The Gulf News?? Not renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the international aerospace scene. This was just a passing comment from a BAE guy at an air show who had a notebook pushed under his nose – and he gave the correct answer. There is no UAE Hawk order.

Even the GAMCO maintenance venture has not been agreed yet – “discussions at an advanced stage” means nothing. “Looking” at aircraft means, effectively, nothing. India looked at the Hawk for 20 years…in this business, until the jets are on the ramp you don’t have an order.

I’m not saying it won’t happen – but it ain’t happening yet.

That’s a great picture of the T-50 in desert colors, but it seems like every time they put up a mock up in such colors..the real thing ends up being painted in a low viz-grey anyways.. like the Block 60.

I’ve seen two variants of the Yak-43, the other one looked more stealthy.
