Bypassing Russia to pump oil from the Caspian sea. Of course that is also the reason for Western Interest in Georgia.
That is why so many chechens have US camo, and nice western TI and other night vision and GPS and communication gear.
How do I know? I am chatting to a guy who was there (he was also in Afghanistan and the first chechen war and the second chechen war he was an “advisor” to the Russian forces).
adding to this.. According to this book “The New Great Game”.. much of the Chechen conflict stems from Azerbaijan’s big oil finds and contracts in the mid 90’s..
prior to the oil issue.. Chechnya was semi-independant with Moscow having no strong interests in sending military to control the region..
after the Azerbaijani’s began making large oil contracts in around 93-94.. thats when Russia decided to get involved.. since Azerbaijan did not have port access to the Meditteranean, it would need to transport it’s oil across to the other side of the caucasus.. and there was already an existing Russian pipeline that connected Azerbaijan to the black sea (via Chechnya).. since oil pipe lines are easy targets.. they need a stabilized region..thus the events of what happened..

I don’t really share the same opinion on the Hawk that mixtec does, but I gotta say I’m somewhat wary of the T-50, Yak-130, M-346, and other new trainers, as they do seem to be overpriced even though very capable.
But I’d like to ask this.. what do you considered overprice? not many have answered this yet.. if you look at almost all the major western aircraft, they are all considered overpriced, the only exception would be used F-16s (but lets keep it to new build aircraft). the T/A-50 will be sold at 20 million.. whether it will change or not will be up to the future..but for now we’ll stick with this figure.. the aircraft is about 80% the weight and size of the Gripen which is around 30-40 million. on the subsonic side.. the M-346 is aimed to be at 15 million, with it’s Russian cousin between 12-15 million. According to Air International, the L159 is around 7m (although this figure is disputable).

but here’s the question.. what IS overpriced? If we look at all the recent aircrafts in the “west”.. later block F-16s, Gripen, Rafale, F-15, Typhoon, F-22, F-35, these trainers etc.. everyone says they’re over priced. What’s left to be deemed as “affordable” are Russian types, used F-16s and Chinese types.
the South Korean air force has placed a considerable order for the T/A-50 and the Hawk has already proved itself to be a big seller with India ordering a large number as well.
The only new trainers that haven’t been doing as well is the MiG-AT and M-346 which hasn’t secured a customer.
Also keeping in mind, unit price does not equal over all price.. while a T/A-50 may come close to a used MiG-29’s price.. the operating costs would probably be different.. not to mention that the Hawk, T/A-50 are still considerably cheaper than the F-16 and Gripen.
Apart from several parts being American, the M-346 has evolved quite a bit from the Russian design and shares only configuration.. the M-346 and Yak-130 are two different airplanes.

Hi, what is FAR/JAR?
Personally I think it’s okay, it looks like a “straight foward” and simple design
good looking helicopter, almost as nice as the EH-101 in terms of looks.
Is Kazan building these helicopters?
True to that, the Aermacchi reaches near Super sonic speeds.. although both it and it’s Russian equivelant are pretty agile aircraft, both should have a 42ΒΊ angle of attack. Thrust to rate ratio of 0.97 on half full tank, and climb of 30,000 ft per 2 minutes
price tag is expected to be around $15million
here’s a picture of 1 of the 3 prototypes that was unveiled last November..

I’d like to see the
Rafale and Gripen: it’s possible since the Gripen can fit the M88 engines.
Su-34 and the Gripen
and
Rafale and the M-346: a nice euro combo along with Raf and Gripen..
or
Su-30 MKI/MKM and the T/A-50
Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the Mirage 4000!

I have to agree with the BugBurger here…
the dissonance in capabilities between the Gripen and the Eurocanards are not as big as that between the F-16 and the F-15, or MiG-29 and Su-3X..
for instance the range, although superior, is not as big as the range offered by true heavy weight fighters.. in terms of weapons.. at the moment I believe the Gripen is actually superior to both Eurocanards, especially since news has it that the Meteor will be fielded to the Gripen first!
However personally speaking.. I always wanted to see a Rafale/Gripen combo..since Saab claims the M88 engines can easily fit into the Gripen’s airframe.
hey are these based on the MKK? look at those square tipped tails!
