Vega, I dont’t think the wing on the YAM Halifax was as extensively rebuilt as what 57 Rescue are doing with their Hastings wing.
The YAM Halifax wing is essentially a Hastings wing with a few cosmetic external modifications. At least as far as I know
The Hampden nose section given away, is that the one now at East Kirkby?
I’ve read the book by Ian Robinson about the construction of the YAM Halifax, didn’t realise there was also a dvd.
The book doesn’t go in to too much detail about the construction of the cowlings, nacelles and bomb doors, which is why I always assumed these parts were ‘mocked up’
I think the exterior look of Friday 13th was improved dramatically when it had it’s repaint about ten years ago, when the French markings were added to the starboard side.
I can also remember reading that the gentleman who used to own the nose of PN323 wanted the IWM to donate it to the project; I think a letter of his was published in Flypast sometime in the late 80s saying so.
My understanding was that the original Halifax fuselage structure was from where the dorsal football antenna is, back to just to the rear of the ‘F’ individual squadron code. The aircraft is more original than many dataplate airworthy restorations.
I’d like to see the nose of PN323 on Friday 13th, rather than just tucked away in a Duxford hanger, then the new build forward fuselage could make a fantastic walk through exhibit.
When the YAM requested the nose of PN323 back in the 80s it was still a new organisation, with many people at the time thinking the Halifax project could not be done. Plus PN323 was entombed at South Lambeth. Now the YAM is well established, relations with IWM seem to be good, and getting PN323 out of that hanger wouldn’t be too difficult surely.
I think the YAM Halifax debate deserves it’s own thread…
Good luck to the Just Jane team.
Any more news on whether this recovery is taking place?
If they find enough of HR871 to form the basis of a restoration project, will that mean they will stop searching for LW170?
And I still hope that one day the nose of PN323 will end up on the YAM Halifax…
So are there plans for the IWM to add the squadron codes on to the B-17 at a later date? Just looks a bit incomplete at the moment, especially when you compare it to the recent paint jobs on the P-51 and B-25
I have seen plenty of pics of B-17s in combat without nose art. I think it was down to crew preference rather than a requirement for the aircraft to be named. Saying that, in my opinion, a B-17 doesn’t look complete with out nose art.
From memory i think the article said the Fort was from the 385th BG. Maybe if history had been a bit different it would’ve ended up at Duxford. A combat veteran Fort in the AAM would be nice.
And maybe the Halifax could have ended up at Hendon.
Glad the IWM B-17 is getting some permanent BG markings. Hope they add some nose art too…
Hope they manage to get it under cover at some point in the future. Seems a shame to do all this restoration work for the aircraft to be left outside.
Just out of interest, is this now the only Canadian Lanc on outdoor display?
Are there plans to move the Lanc under cover?
Are the 96th BG markings on the IWM B-17 permanent? Any plans to add some nose-art too?
Friday 13th probably has more original parts than some of the Spitfires flying around at airshows.
Now they have got the nose of PN323 out of Lambeth, maybe its time to stick it on the front of Friday 13th…
