My Dad reckons that the film The Dirty Dozen was shot on the site of the airstrip and during the war, Laurance Olivier and Ralph Richardson would regularly fly RAF aircraft in and out of there?
New Home for BAC 1-11 G-AZMF
Due to the ruthless decision to close the museum. Ironically, Bournemouth is part of the Manchester Airports Group and the airfame could end up at Manchester! Anyway…
Click on the News section.
I see what you mean!

Superb! The photos encapulate why I enjoy this forum so much.
I appreciate that gliders have to be G- registered now, but why in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s?
I fondly remember them arriving at Luton following their trans Atlantic ferry flights and being towed into the old Court Line hanger rather rapidly after arrival!
I visited Brooklands today and found out more.
4 Wellingtons were converted, flights mainly from Hucknall during 1942-44 with various development engines culminating in the Welland.
516 hours of flight testing time on 389 missions. Pictures and a lot more located behind the Wellington on display there.
Now did Rolls Royce have an aero engine plant during this period at Leavesden?
Many thanks for this, I appreciate your responses.
Yellow with a sunburst red or orange from memory.
The display confirmed as Summer 1974.
Arrow Active
Zlins
Turbulents
Stampes
Dragon Rapide with parachutists
Mosquito
Spitfire
G-ACDC Tiger Moth
and more that I cannot remember, the best view of any flying display that I have ever attended!
G-BRFC, Dave Hughes used to frighten the life out of us with his low ‘fly pasts’ along the grass runways at Luton! After Dave’s premature death the airframe was sold on and I am glad to hear that it is looking good.
When I next see Dave’s daughter, I will let her know about the restoration progression.
Is there a link to view more?
On further questioning, it would appear that it flew over several days maneuvering to the north of the Chiltern Hills around the Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard areas. Low enough for a teenage lad to identify the types and the uniqueness of the third engine emitting “fire from the tail”!
I will pour him another large glass of red tonight and see if he can remember more!
That thought did cross our minds, but I have no idea if Napier were developing such an engine. It certainly would make sense?
Fascinating and thanks for the info, but why was it flying over Bedfordshire with a Lysander chase plane?
Magazine on order, thanks for the lead.
Having made plans to attend tomorrows display (which I assume is cancelled, unless the power of ‘money’ makes it go ahead), then witnessing the news images, reminds me of so many past years! Fanatical, but wonderful souls investing untold effort and priceless airframes being written off.
I guess the power of the media will ensure a ‘bumper’ crowd on Sunday!
I love an Airshow, but it appalls me the attrition rate and the loss of life.
I salute yet another ‘fallen’ enthusiast who has died bringing pleasure to many of us and reflect on yet another life lost and an airframe sacrificed in the quest to remember our gallant history.
