Nice pics – just wondering noticing that the aircraft there was carrying ASRAAM was any integration work done for the standard ‘old’ Sidewinders? L-M etc. models I mean as opposed to the X. Just wondering about the ability of the RAF to field a whole ASRAAM fleet of Typhoons when the time comes alongside the Jags………

i know this isnt really the thread for this but I found this on the A-10.org forum a while back and it makes interesting reading……theres a member there who is a legit ex-agressor pilot who now works on advanved projects and he confirmed that the following test pilot (jake Donovan) would have had the ability to have flown both A/C……..says something for JSF just being a ground pounder……u kinda have to read it fom the bottom up thou…..and ignore the initial question……

    Pete,

You are even closer than you think.
1- Whomever said the F35 is almost the
same as a F22, I have this reply, gee, that Honda 250 Dirt Bike looks just
like my sons Mongoose BMX bike.

2- The F22 is officially headed to the reserves and ANG as soon as the F35
comes on line. Kind of turns on the lights as to the operating parameters
of the 22 vs the 35.

Having flown both, they are not even close to being the same aircraft. The
35 is already light years ahead of the 22. My X/F35 experience was one of
my most memorable test programs I have been involved in. Stepping out of
the Sims and into the aircraft, you found you could push the 35 well past
what the Sims prepared you for. That was a first in my career.

Although the Raptor is a very capable aircraft, If I had the choice and had
a 35 on the line, I wouldn’t leave home with out it. It looks like they got
it right the first time out and the F35 will be with us for some time to
    come.

    Jake

Well the best known ‘fighters’ that could survive a sam or a-a missile hit are the A-10 and the SU-25. But as we all know they arent exactly fighters….

All modern Aircraft have been designed with a certain tolerance to damage and Im sure that most would survive a non-direct hit and be able to recover to at least a divert base…….

Actually statisticly from the first gulf war the F/A-18 could be seen as being more survivable than the A-10 as more hornets hit by missiles were recovered (and yes I know this is the perfect example of stats being completly inaccurate at showing the complete picture but still……..)

Just one point on the F414 there is current development on increasing the thrust by close to 20% which would be of major benefit in the BVR environment.

Link to a forum topic below…

I cant find a link in Aviation Week for the article and dont have the mag handy…..

Actually on the same forum page in the USN section a former Agressor pilot who has worked on the development of the SuperBug has posted a number of times defending the role which A/C fulfills and how the A/C would actually engage opponents, he also had some interesting observations on how the Superbug with JHMCS and Aim-9x was doing in simulated engagements (and anyone who has seen the Super Hornet doing its air display knows that almost all of the manouvres seem to be created purely to show how the A/c can point its nose wherever it wants at high alphas – something hugely important with off boresight weaponry in wvr)….I just cant seem to find those posts anymore…..they dont seem to be archived……..

Another suggestion is a site like http://www.combataircraft.com

That has a list of fighters/bombers etc and has a detail of each a/c and picutres as well……….could be useful for what your trying to do….

While the quoted support and maintenance cost of maintaining an advanced aircraft like the Gripen are thought of as low this is all in respect to the costs of other similar 4th Gen fighters ala F-16 and F/A-18 etc. The IAC could still come nowhere close to affording to maintain one squadron of Gripen, let alone even thinking about the purchasing price of the A/C themselves – the South African Gripens are thought to be in the range of $52-55 Million. Considering the rigmarole of the purchase of the Learjet in the Irish press and parliment (which was only $40 Mil) can you imagine what the response would be to the proposal of spending close to a billion to get and maintain a squadron of say 12-14 A/C for a ten year period? Unfortunatly it just isnt going to happen.

(on a side note Panther = I just noticed ur reply to my previous post on another thread – My error for the Casa 295 – typo sorry. But I thought it was still just the single aicraft that had been equipped for the Oversea Surveillance mission. I wasnt aware that the second aircraft had been equpped similarly – thanks for pointing it out.)

Hey just apoint on the Irish Aer Corps….being from Ireland u notice a distinct lack of ability in our air forces – a white paper several years ago suggested combining the Naval Service and Aer Corps into a single coast guard – this hasnt been implemented and wont be due to funding which is a pity as it would give our forces a distinct role. Ireland actually has the largest Sea Area within the EU to manage and our single CASA-295 while a good bird in itself cannot do it alone. The recent cancellation of the S-92 procurment program was also a major loss and means we will have to rely on contracted a/c for SAR. (Althou it would have been nice to get Merlins instead). Our forces are in dire need of upgrades and while the PC-9s are a great boost they dont really help in and Air defence capability – Theyre coming wired for Sidewinders but we wont be buying any missiles for example…

Tis a pity thou while a well trained force it is vastly underequipped – nothing a squadron of JSF + one of Raptors + a awkeye wouldnt fix thou…….oh well we can dream eh?

I think one of the main issues with the FBW + FCS of the Typhoon was actually to do with the specific company which was given the task to develop it…..due to the way the tenders for contract were given out through the workshare it ended up that a lot of companies got contracts dealing with stuff other than their specialities…….this was only one of the many problems though

And as regards the stealth qualities of the Raptor and JSF I think u’ll find that they are both a lot more capable than theri outside appearance shows….even the Test (ie not coated) X-32/35 were stated to have pretty good inate stalth qualities when tested in the Anechoic chambers and as for the Raptor and of the stories Ive heard about its ACM with F-15 (flown by both test and frontline pilots) show that it is a seriously difficult A/C to detect let alone track – “Allegedy” One of the most recent tests involved a two ship raptor formation vs a 6 – 8 F-15 formation (6 is an unusual Num I know) and the raptors got 6 kills and disengaged without being detected…….The Red Flags over the next few years should be pretty interesting if this is anything to go by…..

Actually the X-31 helped the Germans a lot – the FCS was available to them and was the first fully fbw system they’d developed – and since they were the ones responsible for the FCS of the Typhoon you can now see exactly how important the program ended up being………especially considering the problems they had while making it – What would it have been like without the X-31?
