In the early 80’s I had a share in a 2b at Morridge near Leek with the Staffordshire gliding club, sadly I cant remember the reg number as I only entered Oly 2b in the log book. It had been modified with a larger canopy off a Skylark I think. It was a great old machine that used to creak if you were in strong lift ( who needs a vario) and could stay up on the slightest bit of lift. Morridge was a hill site and I spent hours ridge soaring at around 30kts. I even did my Silver distance in it, fantastic fun… a bit hairy on aerotow behind a Chippie as you had the stick almost fully forward to keep in station.
Yes I have great memories of the Oly 2b, have often thought of giving gliding a go again. Well done for saving yours, brilliant.

Thanks John, much appreciated, I have passed the info on.
Just thought I would refresh this post by saying all the magazines are in excellent condition. A dealer has offered £30 but if any member can match this (or better as its a good cause) then I would rather they had them. the missing ones are easy to get off e-bay.
Any takers?
Ken
Hi Andy,
Any chance you would like to post your views on how she flies.
Thanks
Ken
ps. seems I was half right on the engine.
Thanks for the info on the engine, I just had it in mind it was a VW conversion.
I have found the pics I took at the PFA rally in the 90’s, I am not sure if its the one Don did or note, no doubt someone will know. I was very impressed at the time on the construction a fantastic job.Hopefully it will post ok as its my first attempt at a pic posting.
I think the engine in the replica at Shuttleworth uses a 1/2 VW conversion, what you basicaly do is cut a VW beetle engine in half to make it a twin cylinder which looks like the Cherub. I dont suppose its a simple as that but drawings are available for the conversion. Nothing pops up on a Google search for drawings, perhaps the lads at old Warden would know.
I have just had a thought (must stop doing that) I will ask at the PFA, now called the LAA as they cleared the aeroplane so they must know.
Should have done a search before posting just found a few on the airliners site
Thanks for sorting it for me, do you have a similar link to internal shots of the J1 series of Austers by any chance please
Thanks
Ken
Now all the Auster people are back from Middle Wallop I wonder if any can help me please with my question
Thanks
Ken
I have one here I would consider swapping for any instruments for the Comet project if you are interested
Ken
Just a note to remind everyone its the open day at the Comet restoration centre Derby Airfield. Hope to see some of you there to see the progress.
As an added bonus there is a Waco biplane in the hanger for some maintenance work, a fantastic looking aeroplane, if you ask nicely I am sure someone will show you around it.
Also one of the restoration group members will bw having a book sale on the day of old aeroplane books to help rais fundds, he says he has about 150 so plenty to go through.
Ken
Thanks for the info I will have to get a copy, there is a good piece in the latest Flypast about Swedish built Bleriot’s and a Mikael Carlson who has 2 originals which he flies. Great.
thanks for the info posted, Can I just confirm the Comet these are for is the DH88 Comet with the Gipsy Queen engines.
Seems I may have the wrong generators then which is a pity as they are brand new.
Ken
Thanks Mark,
I have a pair of RPM’s 6A-778 (early type) for the Comet project and was sold a pair of RPM generators said to be the correct ones No 6A-4333780 (KGA043). This number seems long but is on the label on the side.
I have been offered another RPM which looks closer in design to those originaly used ..No 6A-1429 and I wondered if the generators I have will still work, but have also seen some other generators 6A-1549 .This is why I was asking about a list to try and help me see if things will match up
Will the lists you have help?
Thanks
