Hi Rob,
The Comet is in the first building, but you go through the gates and ask at the first white cabin on the right and someone will show you round.
Ken
We havent any specific days planned yet but you can call in any time as its open as long as the airfield is, and someone will show you round… and point out the donations box as well of course. Martin is always pleased to talk about the project and the kettle is always on.
The airfield is closed after today till the new year though in case any were planning a trip up.
Ken
Thanks for all the help so far.
As regards a timescale, the fuselage is done as is all the tail feathers and loads of metal parts including engine bearers and undercarriage assemblies. We have made a start on cutting the wood for the wing spars and will be starting to jig them up in the next few weeks. We have set ourselves a target of late 2014 which is the 80th anniversary of the race. I cant guarantee it flying by then but if things go to plan it will look like a complete aeroplane.
If you go on the web site there is a link to one of the volunteers ‘flicker’ pages where he keeps posting updated pictures. or directly the link is..

Thanks for the help, have dropped a line to Newark so will see what they say before I try Barry

I saw the film of the engine in the car when Martin did a talk at a LAA inspectors meeting, it was great. is there any chance of seeing it again?
Ken
Colin Smith building the replica in New Zealand told me that none of the fittings he got with the project are useable in his replica which is progressing well. I am making the engine bearers and undercarriage assemblies fo him at the moment.
G-RCSR is another replica and will be painted green, while helping with Black Magic we had the thought that it would be great if CSR was around which set me starting on the project. the eventual aim is to get all three Comets together at the same time a sight not seen since the start of the Race in 1934.

Hi Mike,
That would be great if you could as we would be very interested to hear how the stall was and how it was affected by the washout.
Ken
The original wing drawings dont show any washout at all. Original test flight reports and the later tests done by Shuttleworth state that when stalled there is a rapid wing drop.
The American Comet has 3 degrees of washout built in which must have helped as they always seem to do a three point landing. Sadly they have never stalled it so we dont know how it reacts at the stall.
We plan to build in the same 3 degrees when we do the wings for G-ACSP as it has to be an improvement on none.
Work on Black Magic is ongoing, the fuselage fuel tank covers are done and being prepared for covering, the canopy is with the welder being sorted and I have just finished the tailplane and elevators which I am covering now. We have also started to machine up the Spruce for the wing spars and will be sorting the spar jigs shortly.
Ken
Thats definately Rapide as its the same as the ones I have here for the Comet project
