A few years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, a film came out in which a youthful Tom Cruise was threatened with ” flying plastic dog**** out of Taiwan for the remainder of his career” – should he and his wingman fail at Miramar.

    It was Hong Kong.

I would have wondered why the SPEAR 3 was not designed with Stealth from the start, considering that mbda systems have designed and built Storm Shadow.

Cost and simplicity is my guess. Additionally, with it being so small, it’s probably going to approximate a near tennis-ball-sized frontal RCS anyway.

SDB II seeker is optimized for automated target recognition and hitting moving targets.

SDB I and II have a range of 80-90km, but the flyout time is longer since they are glide bombs. That range is within the F-35’s sensor capabilities against camouflaged targets and decoy discrimination.

SPEAR 3 is looking at 140km.

Spray a bit of jamming on the radar, launch 8 and then wait for impact.

When the seeker is a cat’s eye reflector, it does not matter if the weapon is small

Well, this discussion seems familiar. There is a Russian stealth fighter with a far bigger such reflector on the nose. I’m not sure the end cap even comes off until the missile is in the target area either. People are just guessing based on mock-ups and artists impressions at the moment.

Hey, Guys! Win, lose or draw we shall all learn in three weeks time. I refuse to get exercised over the matter.

It will probably be delayed following the vote on the 12th March. But we can always hope that the EU will reject the delay.

Looking at that graph, could you explain how the EJ200 (developed in the ’80s) is already operating at 1,800K (1527degC)?

The downfall of all three munitions is lack of VLO design which makes ECM support against enemy CIWS more difficult during the terminal phase. So you have to employ a simultaneous swarming attack to make sure some of the munitions get through to the target.

A 1.8m long, 7 inch wide missile is going to have a pretty small RCS anyway.

SPEAR 3 has longer range and is more about SEAD/DEAD and taking out vehicles with SAM cover. SDB I/II are more about taking out buildings or parts of buildings from closer ranges, or large patrol boats too I guess. SPEAR 3 can also take low level routes to the target if need be.

Reduction of bypass provides the most payoff at extremely high altitudes, say >40K feet.

You get the best thrust improvement when using an afterburner to energize low temperature bypass air.

Reduction of the BPR mainly benefits high speed thrust, because at high speed you need a faster jet velocity to produce thrust.

Higher BPR is generally better at everything up to about M0.8ish. It also gives a less hot exhaust as moon_light says.

    Did Tango stop posting news?

Yeah, there’s been no missile news for about two weeks, hopefully he’s just on holiday.

It’s a simple principle. Run a higher BPR for cruise and take-off, getting better fuel consumption and take-off thrust, then reduce the BPR when you want to go supersonic. So basically you run a BPR of maybe 1-2:1 at take-off and when cruising and then 0.3-0.4 when going supersonic.

It might sound it but it isn’t. It’s a variable bypass ratio, it’s not new.

“Show me the sign that said there’d be £350m of savings. The sign said that we send £350m per year to the EU. It’s a gross figure but it’s a fact.”

I’m sorry but you appear happy to be rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, to make a pointless argument, whilst it’s sinking into the cold icy sea. That was the statement, that was the inference, fact. It didn’t state save £179M but give £350M to the NHS or any other combination.

You’d be far better off having some passion and anger about reality about the mass exodus of businesses from the UK, it’ll make that £350M paltry.

It didn’t state ‘give the NHS £350m’. It stated, “Let’s fund the NHS instead.”

That’s May’s fault for not preparing a proper no deal plan with tariffs and non-tariff barriers to make clear to those businesses that they’d effectively be completely excluded from the UK market if they left. At the moment she’s giving off the impression of a deal or a low tariff no deal, and that’s what’s driving the businesses away.
