Carl, that is not a camera. What you see mounted on the rear fuselage there is a protective device in case of a rear tail strike. If that were to happen, that little device there would prevent the tail from scraping on the runway. Longer fuselage aircraft, such the 777-300, 767-400 have them. I’m sure the A340-600 does, as well.

RE: What was your first flight?

My first flight/s were in June/July 1976 when was I was 2 years old, so I don’t remember much. I just know that it was TWA and it was LAX-JFK then JFK-ATH, and the same segments on the return. I did the same trip 7 years later in 1983 again with TWA. This time around I could obviously remember the aircraft. They were 747-131’s on the first 3 segments, and an L1011 on the return JFK-LAX leg. I’m guessing in ’76 I had similar equipment, with perhaps a 707-331 mixed in somewhere. They were still widely used back then and TWA had quite a few, but I can’t be sure. Maybe if I get ahold of some old timetables, I could know for sure. I’d like to know that I’ve flown on a 707.

CD players are definitely NOT illegal, as Mongu said. I openly use mine all the time. The only things that CAN NOT be used during flight are mobile phones and radios, that’s it. The rest of the electronical equipment only cannot be used the first and last 10 minutes of the flight.

I like the EAL scheme, especially the different colours and how they all have the black tail and rear fuselage. I saw the Red one in Amsterdam last week, we taxied right up next to her so I got a close look. Really sharp.

    RE: Aircraft Museums

If any of you are ever visiting the U.S., there are a few. The Museaum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle is a must see. Also the Air and Space Smithsonian in Washington D.C. I’ve been to a few smaller profile ones as well, like the March AFB field museum, which is all military. Also, a few civil ones.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-08-02 AT 00:40 AM (GMT)]Ok, I had read it wrong, apparantly. I thought the initial route was to India, but it was in fact JFK.

Why was there a stop in Sabah? Shouldn’t have they just done NRT-KUL-SYD? Also, Malaysian has a billboard at SYD claiming business class entertainment in economy class seating, so my guess is they still have the nintendo games. The best feature in my opinion, is on-demand movies. Time flies by quick when you can watch movies at your discretion, and pause them when you have to use the toilet.

I didn’t think their red livery was all that special. I actually like this one better, also.

I think that’s a slight overgeneralization. I fly United all the time, and there’s always different choices on offer. Even if chicken is a choice on several flights, it is usually done differently, or accompanied by different vegies, potato, etc. I rarely choose the chicken option, don’t eat fish, and I’m usually pretty satisfied with what I eat. Therefore, that ‘something else,’ i.e. steak, lamb, pasta, ceasar salad, etc., must be pretty good.

Phil-cov-uni, how can you go from John Lennon being a traitor to George Bush starting WWIII? That came out of nowhere, to say the least. Can we make logical transistions, please? This thread suddenly became political, and last time I checked, this is not a political forum.

The Shorts 360 is by far the ugliest plane in aviation history. Don’t hurt me though JA, I promise I’ll give you coffee!

Average, not unlike British Airways, apparantly. Now that USAirways has signed a codeshare agreement with United, I will be able to sample this tremendous service myself. Finally, THANK GOD that salad thing can be put to rest now. Thank you Shaun.

This is one of the Sultan’s ‘personal’ aircraft, Andrew. There have a been a few. A couple of years ago, he had another A340 up for sale at the Dubai airshow that had apparantly been a gift to/from his daughter, or something. This one was painted in a greyish color scheme with similar cheatlines. The particular aircraft in this picture, I believe, is the prototype A340-200.

Just a half-hour Kabir? That’s nothing. On flights lasting longer than a few hours, that could be made up in the air, unless you get huge head-winds. Besides, on longer flights, they even have a margin of error time in their schedule to cater for such delays. For instance, UA’s LAX-SYD route has a flight time listing of 15 hours. That’s only a 14 hour flight. I routinely have left at least a half hour after ‘departure time,’ always arriving at SYD on time, if not a few minutes early.

I’m not a fan of the Beatles and I know this is an aviation forum, but, I’m rather curious as to why you refer to John Lennon as a traitor, Mongu.
