RE: TAX
Each airport charges different amounts. LHR is by far one of the worst. I did a ticket using mileage for Singapore Airlines. Even when you do award travel, you still have pay the taxes. Initially I did SYD-SIN-LHR and LHR-SIN-SYD on the return. The tax for this was about $145US. I then changed my itinerary to AMS-SIN-SYD just on the return, but still flying into LHR on the inbound. My tax decreased to $85US just by using AMS on the outbound only. I wonder how much it would have decreased had I used AMS both on the outbound and inbound!

RE: PIA Plans USD$2 Billion Fleet Expansion
Nonstop, flying to LAX? Flying westbound, that’s a hell of a long flight! Not quite sure what the mileage there is, but could the A340-500 even make that without a tech stop?

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?
Amsterdam is brilliant! I was just there last week. As a little follow up to my last post, by far the worst Euro-airport no longer in use, is Athens Hellinikon. Thank God for the new Eleftherio Venizelos Airport. Hellinikon sucked for any aspect you can think of. The only thing good about it, was if you were staying in Glyfada/Voulgiagmeni, you had a great view of approaching aircraft pretty much 24/7. But that’s not actually in the airport. Just to comment on something that seems to come up often, I have been to very few ‘BIG’ airports that have decent aircraft viewing, prior to going airside. Smaller airports yes, but the bigboys, this is tough to do unless you know of a spot away from the terminal area, near the runway or approach, or something.

RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?
I have mixed reactions on Heathrow. Shopping is excellent, in terms of facilities, albeit, rather pricey. Duty free was much cheaper in Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Aircraft viewing within the terminals is rather limited, unless you’re inside one of the lounges. Lufthansa’s lounge in terminal 2 gives a decent view of movement, as does UA’ Red Carpet club in T3. However, the view from inside T2 is, as Mongu mentioned, attrocious. Ceilings are indeed low. I flew through Munich a few weeks back, and was very unimpressed by it. Seeing as it is less than 10 years old, I found this very disappointing. The facilities within the terminal were non-existant, and the LH lounge was significantly, below average. What I also didn’t approve of was the fact that I flew 2 segments within the EU, yet when I got off my flight from LHR-MUC, then was connecting to ATH, I practically was streetside, had to walk from one side of the terminal to the other, then go through security once again before I boarded my next flight. You should not have to do this at a hub airport, unless of course you’re clearing customs before continuing on to the next flight, in my opinion. Frankfurt was much better, in terms of facilities. Although the terminal layout is rather confusing at times; there are too many unnecessary passport control stations in going from one terminal to the next. I missed my flight to Amsterdam because I got to the gate 15 minutes prior to the departure time, and was told that I couldn’t board because the aircraft was at a remote location and the last bus left 12 minutes prior to departure. Apparantly their watch was 5 minutes faster than mine. I argued, to no avail, and got to Amsterdam 4 hours later than planned. Viewing is good, however, then the LH lounged was excellent. I have gone on long enough…

RE: Quiz
I knew that first one was that Antonov, and not the Spruce Goose. Anybody care to shed some light on my questions about the AC A340’s in my pevious post on this thread?

RE: What are your plans?
It was not treated so ‘lightly’ in the U.S., Dan. I had my TV on pretty much all day in my classroom. Everybody was well aware of what was going on, and rather shocked. It was just before I went to work that day that it happened, early in the morning. I shall be doing the same thing again this year, working, with my brand new, larger, wall-mounted TV this time around, however, not my little one from home brought in.

RE: What airline has the worst c/s?
Kabir, what’s wrong with Malaysian’s c/s? It’s not all white, it has a cheatline, and decent colors. Anyway, I’ll vote for the same I did last time, Southwest’s old Brown scheme. Absolutely hideous, worst ever. I didn’t like America West’s old scheme either.

RE: Quiz
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-08-02 AT 08:51 PM (GMT)]I believe the first one is that huge Antonov prop driven freighter, not sure the numerical designation. It has counter-rotating props. Not as big as the Goose, but I would discount the Goose due to technicalities, i.e., was in the air for all of about 30 seconds, I believe? Also, as far as Air Canada goes, if indeed BWIA does take 2 more from AC, is AC planning on getting rid of all their A340-300’s much like SIA, as AC has already given 2 of them to Air Jamaica? I know AC is supposed to take delivery of both the -500 and -600’s, althought they have deferred delivery of the latter. Lastly, from whom did BWIA get their first A340’s?

RE: US to cut miliatary aid to Taiwan if China Airlines gets 330
As controversial as I often come across, I respect what both of you have to say. You both make logical arguments, and I respect that. Again, I just had to say something given the situation. And just to reiterate, I’m not necessarily condoning what’s happening, just offering my opinion by keying in on the business side.

RE: US to cut miliatary aid to Taiwan if China Airlines gets 330
Ok, let’s end this right now. I’m not necessarily condoning what the U.S. is doing, for the record. Naturally being the only American on here, I had to say something. I’m looking at this purely from a business point of view. Obviously there are political implications involved, as well. I’m not even going to touch those, because the point you make about “BA buying from Airbus” is a very valid one, as well. I won’t deny that. Theoretically, the U.S. could be denying aid to every country that it supports, if they buy from Airbus, not just the UK, as you mentioned. I think this is a special case with Taiwan, as they have counted on the U.S. for so long for protection from Communist China. Without that, they obviously could have been taken down when Mao Zedong was still in power. Given that, U.S. is using the ‘ace in the hole,’ so to speak, as bargaining leverage. My father owns a business, all of my uncles own businesses, my cousin who is younger than I just opened a business. In a world of competition, people are ruthless. Some of the stories I’ve heard, people will do anything and everything to keep potential, current and future customers. Roughly 90% of these tactics could be seen as coldblooded, even borderline blackmail. It’s sad Kev, but that’s business. Everybody does it, you just don’t necessarily hear about it. The U.S. gov’t in siding with Boeing here, is using business tactics. Right or wrong, world police or no world police, it’s business. They are protecting their own, as wrong as it seems.

RE: US to cut miliatary aid to Taiwan if China Airlines gets 330
The U.S. will keep it’s “arrogance,” if that’s what you want to call it, as long as it practices capitalism, and doesn’t resort to communistic or socialistic business tactics.
