RE: BA Vs. low cost carriers!
I agree with you, Mongu. Frequent Flyer mileage goes a long way in my book. I’m flying business class on Singapore airlines in one week because of my UA miles. And it’s true that they advertise those seats at that low price, but you have to get them so far ahead of time in order to ‘get them.’ The low-cost carriers do serve a good purpose, in competing with the big boys head on, and making them lower prices in most cases. Good on them for that, especially if they remain profitable in doing so. We do need more low-cost carriers in the industry.

RE: air new zealand to get a32
Ja,
I know you’re the authority down under, but I just got out the July 2002 issue of Airways and read the article on AirNewZealand again. Here’s the deal. October 4, 2001, the NZ gov’t invested NZ$885 million in return for 82% of the recapitalized shares of ANZ. Brierly Investments and Singapore Airlines saw their 30% and 25% interests reduced to 5.3 and 4.2%, respectively. That’s 91.5% of the airline right there. It doesn’t say who owns the remaining 8.5%. Regardless of who it is, I wouldn’t exactly call that a majority. It further goes to make statements such as, “What should we do about QANTAS, which is knocking at our door again?” Also, “There seem to be three broad options for AirNewZealand. Continue to exist in its present form as an independent (albeit government-owned) airline; be taken over by another airline, such as QANTAS; or dramatically reduce its size and cost structure, etc.” Furthermore, “QANTAS is salivating at the prospect of accomplishing its long-held goal of taking over its Trans-Tasman rival…such an acquisition would give QF dominance on trans-Tasman and international flights…” “We interviewed Andrew Miller, senior vice-president-strategy and planning, in Auckland and asked him about the QANTAS takeover proposal. ‘We serve a lot of similar markets. QANTAS has made it very clear they’d like to take a stake in Air New Zealand….” So there you have it JA. Again, I don’t know what your newspaper that’s sitting in the rubbish somewhere, circa September 2001 says. This article is fairly recent, July 2002. Looks to me as if QF is still trying to take a stake in them, but hasn’t done so yet. Unless of course they have done so after this article was published. According to you, they’ve had a majority stake for a long time now.

Austrian is a great airline, so is Aegean.

RE: Concorde in trouble again!
As nice as the Concorde is, I don’t really think SST’s are economically feasible anymore. The wave of the future is bigger and quieter, not necessarily faster. As big a fan of Boeing as I am, I personally am not into their Sonic Cruiser, at all. I’d like to see them come up with a direct rival to the A380 instead, and I’m not talking about the 747-400ER either.
RE: Future of 3 engined commercial liners
Every US major had a sizeable fleet of 727’s at one point. They are pretty much all gone by now. Northwest looks to be flying their DC-10’s for a few more years. Delta still flies the MD-11. Other than that, all those types will still be around for years to come as freighters. It would still be nice to see them in passenger configuration, however. I saw a Thai MD-11 at SYD yesterday, and it looked just immaculate. My alltime favorite is the tristar, followed by the 727-200.

That’s right, damnit! Typical American attitude, shoot first, clean the carcasses up later.

RE: Model Aircraft
A330Crazy, congrats on only being on this forum for less than a week, and already having 3 feedbacks. I’m a charter member and barely have 5!!! I probably own 50-70 models, all plastic snapfit Wooster, LongProsper, PPC, and Modelair types. Modelair has the best quality of the 4. Most of them have been put together, but I’d say the last 30-40 I have purchased are still in the box, as I have run out of room to display them on. In a few months I am moving into a house, so I’ll dedicate one room to all of my aviation ‘junk,’ so to speak. Initially I obtained 1/250, 1/180, and 1/200 scale types. After a year or so I decided to standardize on only the 1/200 types, as I feel that their quality is the best, among the plastic models. I’m not going to list the ones I have, as not only am I out of town and do not recall them all, but I’d be typing for a very long time. I do have United’s entire fleet practically, as I get the types I fly on, and I do have a Beluga, as well. I also get ones of schemes I enjoy, like the former WestPac Simpson’s plane. The only one I haven’t been able to obtain because it was phased out years ago, is the Wooster Olympic A300, 1/250 scale. Anyone know where I can get one of those?

RE: Lets blame 11/9 for everyt
That’s fair enough, Mongu. I agree that those all are good measures, and especially agree that there needs to be more consistency worldwide. The system will never be foolproof, but it has be good enough to where it will scare off most would-be attacks, and stop the rest of the few.

RE: BA plane at missile strike
Interesting that you bring that up, Mongu, as that is another debate in itself. I was born in the U.S., both my parents were born in Greece. Unlike your fiance, I have been to the old country 6 times, soon to be 7. We still retain all the customs and traditions, even living in the U.S. To that extent, I am very Greek, and the fact that I associate with my cousins and Greek friends rather often helps keep the Greek alive. I was, however, born in the U.S., live in the U.S., and will continue to live in the U.S. I pay taxes to the U.S., and they pay my salary. I consider myself, “Greek-American,” which I suppose is the politically correct thing to do. I support both nations when they play internationally, however Greece and the Greek way of thinking piss me off(especially after Sept. 11) quite a bit, especially when it comes to politics. But I’d rather not even go there. Hope that answers your question.

P.S. I also have an Australian fiance Mongu, we have something in common. However, mine is Greek-Australian, rather than Italian.
RE: Lets blame 11/9 for everyt
Even on business class on both UA and NZ recently, I’ve had plastic knives, but metal forks. Do you think that every airline needs to do what El Al does, Mongu? If not that extreme, what would you propose they do in order bring the security up to par?

It’s all good Bhoy, I really don’t get offended that easily. I was actually very amused by your use of it. I just had to bring it up since it seems like I’m the only bloody yank in here, and represent in the process. And one that claims another nationality as a handle, no less. Go figure?

RE: air new zealand to get a32
I just read an article on AirNewZealand in Airways. It didn’t say anything about that. It just mentioned that QF wanted to buy a stake in them, but it hadn’t happened yet. Was this recent? As far as ANA goes, the 747’s that they use on their short hops are -400D’s for domestic that have a beefed up undercarriage to cater for the increased cycles, no winglets, and I don’t think they have the extra fuel tanks either. JAL has these as well, and they are specific for this purpose. Any other airline who uses 747’s on short domestic services, well they are just using regular ones. I always thought JAL had the largest 747 fleet, including classics.

RE: For the record
JA, it’s a shame that ANZ was responsible for the demise of Ansett. They had to be complete idiots in the way they handled the whole thing. Am I bitter at them for doing that? Yes. I never got to fly Ansett and this weekend would have been a perfect opportunity to do so as I flew from SYD to MEL. I had to settle for VirginBlue instead. It also left Star without anybody in Australia, and I come here quite a bit. However, will I stop flying them? No. They’re still a good airline. Since when did QF acquire a stake in them? I know after that whole Ansett thing, the gov’t re-took a huge stake in them, like 80%+ and SIA’s stake was reduced to like 8%, along with somebody else having like 8%. Is QF that other 8%? If so, why couldn’t SIA just have control of the 8%, since they had 25% at one stage, and if I’m not mistake, it was increased to 35% before the gov’t took over. Why would QF even be allowed to have a stake in them, being in the rival alliance?

RE: Anyone know the best day f
I’m not sure about Corfu, as I’ve never been there. However, when I was on Rhodes 3 years ago, Thursday was a haven for Condor, Hapag Lloyd, and Aero Lloyd. Sunday was primarily Premiair and Novair. Each Tuesday there was an El Al 747-200. That’s what I can best remember off the top of my head. I was an idiot back then, and did not take photographs. As far as Condor goes, I’ve already seen one of their 767’s in Thomas Cook colors.
