RE: Mobile Phones
I agree with you mongu, however, incoming mobile phone calls disrupt lots of things. If the phone is just sitting there, it’s ok. Regardless of whether or not the phone is on. However, if I have my mobile phone next to my computer and a receive a call, the monitor and the speakers go ballistic. Same goes for my television. Same goes for the radio in my vehicle when I’m driving. Now, I certainly hope that technology in an avionics suite is more high-tech than my monitor or television, but maybe it doesn’t matter on the technology? Maybe the signals that send mobile calls disrupt the microwaves, or whatever anyhow.

RE: ONEWORLD (PLAYING FAIR??)
I was not aware that Iberia had a hub at Miami and had their own aircraft stationed there. My question is, why don’t they just put their flight numbers on AA flights considering AA has a huge presence there with endless connections to the Caribean and Latin America?

RE: New members to the Star Alliance
Keltic, are you talking about SAS, or just Spanair in specific, acting stupid. Or both? And Mr. Monster, is that the ONLY reason “Oneworld is all over Star” or are there other, more valid reasons, as well? I’m just curious.

RE: Mobile Phones
Did the captain announce that it was that very reason? Also, was the passenger indentified?

RE: ONEWORLD (PLAYING FAIR??)
Well, AA and BA are by far the 2 most monopolistic airlines in existance. As far as them taking advantage of the other members of OneWorld, I really don’t see that. They benefit quite a bit from the other members, such as QANTAS.

No SMF, it’s not a joke. See Dazza’s and Kabir’s posts.

RE: BY
My favourite airline by far is Austrian Airlines. I flew them between London and Athens last summer, then Thessaloniki to London on the return, both time via Vienna. The service was amazing, as was the food. They have clean, modern aircraft and friendly, good looking flight attendants, wearing all red(the only thing that could have been better was if they wore all black!). To give an example, the flight between Thessaloniki and Vienna was only an hour and a half, we got fed a great meal, drinks, and several times throughout, the flight attendants came down the aisles with fresh roles. Pretty much the same gig on the other 3 segments, although I slept much of the first 2. Furthermore, the Lufthansa/Austrian lounge in LHR terminal 2 was amazing!

RE: Alitalia
My father has flown them on a few occassions from LAX to ATH via MXP. Other than his flight from MXP to JFK on the return being delayed and them losing his luggage for a couple of days, he didn’t mind them too much. With them being part of Skyteam now, he got his Delta mileage, which is what he was mainly concerned about. The way I see it, if you fly anybody other than Virgin from LAX to Europe, it’s all the same. You pretty much have a choice of airlines, you’re going to make one stop at their hub, then continue on. I’ve never flown Virgin but I’ve heard and read enough about their service to know about their product. The choice for me is who I’m getting frequent flyer miles with, so that would be UA or LH. Ironically, Alitalia stopped serving LAX while he was in Greece, which is why he had to go to JFK, then connect to Delta on the return. Why they would stop serving LAX right before the peak summer season, is beyond me. My guess is that they won’t be coming back for while.

Great pics, where are they taken? The 2nd and 3rd to the last links don’t work.

RE: New members to the Star Alliance
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-06-02 AT 10:58 AM (GMT)]The addition of Spanair makes sense. They had already been involved in a codesharing agreement with UA(and possibly other Star members aw well) for over a year now. The other 2 additions are very surprising, especially Asiana. Wasn’t Asiana somehow tied in with Oneworld? Not necessarily a full-fledged member, but codeshared with current members? Maybe Oneworld isn’t quite doing it for them. Besides, I thought Star was pretty settled in Asia with Singapore, Thai and ANA. The addition of LOT is surprising, but not as much as Asiana. LOT was in Qualiflyer, which is history, so it seems they were just looking to join another alliance and chose the best one. These 2 European airlines just strengthens STAR in Europe, where Oneworld might be stronger. I was thinking(or hoping) Star’s next addition would come from the MiddleEast, like Saudi Arabian, or better yet, Emirates, both of which UA currently has codesharing aggreements with. Even BWIA would make sense. More wishful thinking, perhaps, would have Virgin Blue join STAR, to take the place of Ansett. But that’s very unlikely to happen.

RE: Identify the Airlines!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-06-02 AT 10:35 AM (GMT)]The A300 nose section (4th one down) is Indian Airlines. The lower case ‘a’ is an Aces A320. I don’t know the rest of them.

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-06-02 AT 06:53 PM (GMT)]During my last semester in college, I got hired on by UPS to work at their nearby Ontario(ONT) hub, which is their biggest other than their main Louisville, KY hub. I was a peak hire during the busy Christmas season, and was laid off at the end of December. This was ok, considering I had received my diploma and was ready to start my carear, anyhow. Needless to say, it was the best job I’ve had to date, even though it only lasted a month. I would come in at 2 a.m.(to the lovely smell of Jet-A!), and get off at 7 a.m. Then, I’d take an hour to get some breakfast, and go back from 8 till noon, or so. I worked on a crew where our primary duty was unloading the main decks of the narrowbodies. I mostly worked on the 727-100, 757-200PF, and the DC-8-71/73. However, during the 2nd portion of the doubleshift, I got to unload the 747’s as well. We would pull the cans(A-2’s or L-9’s) forward to the cargo door, and push them onto the K-loader; and vice versa on the load. My favorite was the DC-8. Sometimes, a couple of us would just kick it in the cockpit while we were waiting. It was great!

RE: Quiz
I definitely agree with GZYL on the wings, tail and winglets. And I agree with Andrew in that the fuselage most closely resembles the A380 with a single deck. If they move the row of windows/doors up, they could definitely fit another one underneath. It’s definitely not a 727 or any other narrowbody, it’s just too wide. The engines most closely resemble the original RB211’s on the Tristar, which a slight change to the exhaust cone.

RE: Airline Liveries
I really like the United, 2nd Lufthansa, and the American. I also approve of the Alitalia, and the TAP. Some of the others are good too. The ones I really disapprove of are the 1st Lufthansa, JAL, and the Swiss. Did the creator of that website come up with those himself? Very impressive!

RE: Worst C/S
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-05-02 AT 11:14 PM (GMT)]Dan the man, you’re telling me the new colors look worse than the old $hit brown ones, you gotta’ be kidding me! Mind you, I think they should have done away with the orange all together, but at least they ditched the brown! SW’s old livery is by far the worst in aviation history, in my humble opinion.
