Nice photos. Does anyone know if that Black Learjet belongs to Clay Lacy?

I take it the Nikon D2x is an expensive piece of machinery? I’m curious as to what some of the commentary from the Sydney forum is. I’ve done some spotting/photography there a few times.

Well, it is just an inflight picture, not a trip report.
That’s why I placed it here.

Indeed, and a very fine one at that. However, we have 2 sub-forums, 1 for trip reports, and 1 for photographs.

The clarity on these photos is unbelievable. I love the one of the closeup of the Corsair 744. Gotta’ love those engines, eh Sandy? 😉

This summer I will go to New York (aug2 – aug10). Anyone familiar with spotting at its airports? I intend to do 2 or 3 days of spotting at EWR and JFK if possible. Preferrably I would not want to hire a car, so the spots should be accesible by public transport.

Also, on the way back I got 3 hours to kill in DTW (got to do something to fly a DC9). With this time getting landside will not be possible, so how are the views airside? And how wise would it be to go around the terminal with the Canon and telelens? Will there be no problems, or can I expect captain America to harass me for being a terrorist.

I’ve never flown through DTW so I can’t help you there. I’ve never spotted at any of the NY airports, I’ve just flown in and out of all of them. There is a really good website you can visit that has spotting maps and directions for LGA and JFK. I just looked at it and they only have directions if you have a car for JFK, but they have directions with public transport for LGA. No info is posted yet for EWR. It’s http://www.nycaviation.com. Phil Derner is the president. He’s a rather popular photographer on a.net for photos @ JFK. I met him at at Airliners04 when it was in LAX a couple years ago. Really nice guy. If you go on there or contact him at phil@nycaviation.com, I’m sure he’ll give you some useful info. Hope this helps. What are you doing the other 7 or 8 days in NY?

Indeed. The DC-8 idea was to have big windows at every seat row – every 40 inches. Comfortable… but when you try to cram coach seats at less than 40 inches pitch, problems begin.

Any idea what pitch UA, DL, etc. had on their diesel eight’s back in the day?

On a side note, companies like UPS had fewer windows to plug as a result when they converted the Eights to freighters. 😉

Does anyone know the time of day that A380 enters into service? SQ flies SIN-SYD 3 times a day – which of them would have the EIS flight?

That’s a good question. The SIN departure times in december: 0020, 0940, and 2040. The SYD return flights are: 0830, 1245, and 1655. I’ve been on the 0830 departure and it was pretty packed. On a side note, anybody know what’s going on Oct. 1-7 in either Sydney or Singapore? For that week only, SQ is operating 4 dailies on the aforementioned route.

I heard a while back SQ would fly it to LHR then fly to SIN.

No, they won’t introduce it onto the LHR route until they fly it on the SYD route. Something along the lines of crew numbers. They only need a single crew for the 7 hour SYD flight as opposed to two crews for the 13 hour LHR flight.

Yeah, thanks for that Steve. They have a thread going on A.net at the moment. I wouldn’t mind taking that flight when I fly down to Australia for Christmas. 😉

How long has that been open? I know they had the concorde parked outside for a while during construction. I believe I saw Dash-80 in Seattle a few years back.

Then sounds like narrowbodies are better. In a MD-11, there are 9 or 10 seats abreast, just 2 of which have a window. In a DC-8, there are just 6 seats abreast, and still 2 of them with a window…

Yeah, but if you look at the DC-8, the windows seem to be spaced out more than your typical narrowbody. None of the Boeing narrows seem to be like this. At any rate, I’ll take an aisle seat on a flight longer than 2 hours any day. Don’t get me wrong, I like looking at the surroundings as much as the next guy, but once my bladder takes over, I like to be able to move around at my discretion and not have to climb over people. On shorter flights I take the window. I mainly like looking outside while taxying and takeoff and landing. I’m not a big fan of looking at glaciers, oceans, clouds, and checkerboard patterns for extended periods of time.

Most flown type (specific): 737 countless times followed closely by the Emb-120. The A320 series isn’t too far behind either.

Most flown airline: United. I don’t have a specific number but I have over 250,000 lifetime miles on Star carriers, at least 200,000 of which is on UA and that doesn’t count my numerous award travel flights.

Most flown route: ONT-LAX and LAX-ONT
Cheapest ever return fare (including taxes, charges etc) : roughly $70 ONT-YVR. It was right after AC went on strike in 1998 and they had some good deals to get customers back. Everybody matched the fares.

Scariest moment: Anytime I fly to Vegas the plane bounces around over the desert.

Most memorable moment: In 1983 I flew with my family on TWA to ATH and the flight attendant posted my drawing of a TW L1011 on the movie screen and everybody clapped. I was pretty pleased.

Most visited UK airport: LHR, which happens to be the only one as well.

Most visited ‘foreign’ airport: ATH, YUL, FRA, AMS.

Best meal: Any meal I’ve eaten in UA’s business class, especially the filet mignon.

Worst Airport: MEX followed by the old ATH Hellinikon. Both were dumps.

Some of the a.netters on their thread were rather optimistic that they would be able to repair that mess. Now, I’m not in the business of repairing airframes, but that looks pretty totalled to me. The repairs have to be worth more than the cost of a 20 y/o 762. Airlines aren’t exactly swiping up the plethora of them that are parked in the deserts at the moment.
