It’s pretty much per the airline. There’s no set standard. For instance, for UA 800’s are trans-pacific flights. 900’s are trans-atlantic. UA’s flight 1/2 used to be the around-the-world flight. Nowadays it’s operating as ORD-HNL-ORD. NZ’s flight 1/2 is AKL-LAX-LHR and back.

Interesting story for any of you guys possibly watching the U.S. sitcom “Lost.” For those that don’t, it’s about castaways on an island from a plane crash routing SYD-LAX on a fictitious airline called Oceanic. The flight they were on was numbered 816. Needless to say, UA’s LAX-SYD-LAX flight for years and years was 815/816. About two years ago, when the show first aired (they are currently on their 2nd season), UA changed the number on that flight to 839/840. At the time I wondered why, as I have been flying this route since 1999 and has basically had the same flight number since they acquired the route from PA in the mid 80’s. I figured the coincidence that ABC studios decided to use the same flight number (same route no less) had a lot to do with that. What are the odds that the creators of the show just randomly chose that number?

Last owner was Airborne Express I think. I have the original “N” reg number here so it was definately with a us airline last.

It probably was Airborne. They had a boatload of those super 62’s and 63’s before they slowly started to phase them out and take delivery of the 2nd hand 762’s from NH and TW. They used to fly over my house all the time taking off from ONT and making a right hand 180 before heading off to where-ever they are based back east. I used to love it because they made a lot of noise and left 4 smoke trails! At any rate, I think they’ve been bought out by DHL on this side of the pond, as the 762’s I see parked at ONT now where Air Ex used to be are in the Yellow DHL livery.

By the way Sandy, nice job on that. It looks outstanding! I remember Bahamasair old livery on their 727’s. It wasn’t bad, but not as good as yours. Sorry to hear about the Diesel Eight.

I think the reason why it hasn’t happened in the U.S. is because land is not at a premium here. Look at where they reclaimed land (or emptied water out) in Asia and those countries aren’t exactly huge land masses and are relatively crowded in terms of people. The ones I can think of off hand are HKG, ICN, KIX, MFM and now the new airport in Dubai, Jebel Ali. With the exception of Dubai, the rest of those places are not large, square mileage wise and reclaiming land was the best option. I will address the 3 cities you mention.

Los Angeles: They have room for expansion down here. Sure, they have to move a few things around, but LAX is still built on a very large area of land.

Chicago: Two airports, one of which has significant traffic, but again, ORD is built on a huge mass of land. They have so many runways and surely have room to expand if needed.

New York: Three major airports eliminates the need to seriously expand any of them, seeing as they really spread the wealth in terms on traffic (none of them handling more than 40 million pax annually). Now, if they wanted to ditch the three airports and build one massive one, then taking the existing JFK site and reclaiming a significant amount of land from the water adjacent to it building one massive airport would be feasible. Thus creating the largest airport, in my opinion, in the process, undoubtedly handing 100 million pax annually. But this isn’t in the works by any stretch of the imagination.

I can understand what you mean Ken. I remember walking back to the hotel (Maho Beach Sonesta Hotel) alone one night from the Sunset Beach Bar and on the way I was stopped by some guys asking me if I wanted to buy Cannabis or if I had a light on me. The distance from the SSBB to the hotel isn’t very far as you all know so it just goes to show that as beautiful as the island is, it isn’t at all safe.

You get asked to buy cannabis at a lot places. At Jamaica, I stayed at the Holliday Inn resort and right across the street at the boutique shops, there were multiple people selling cannabis and you were sure to get asked if you strolled across. In Amsterdam, everybody and their mom asks if you want ecstacy or cocaine. I got the same treatment in Frankfurt. No biggie. Just ignore them. I had no problems with that during my week in St. Maarten, however. I never felt unsafe there, even at night walking with just my wife.

Just about every major us airline flies here now, Delta, USAir, United, Continental and American.

It’s interesting that you mention that because about 3 or so years ago, not this many U.S. carriers flew down there reguarly aside from US and AA. Sure, you had the weekly DL flight and CO came in once or twice a week, but that was it. Now, UA has twice weeklies from IAD and a weekly from ORD. Unless I’m mistaken, both CO and DL have increased services, and you even get an AC service now. Glad to see more carriers from the states (and Canada) serving SXM.

Will Heathrow lose out and fall behind ?

Uh, probably not. I don’t see how these two airports are being compared, considering they are nowhere near each other.

Nice photos. Is TravelCityDirect a Spanish carrier? The reason I ask, is because I saw one of their 747’s parked at OPO two years ago during the Euro the day Spain was playing Greece in Porto.

Ken, where have you been? I miss your photos from SXM.

Apart from the KLM 744 and the AF 340 we mostly have medium and smaller.

    …. and the Corsair 744, formerly 743.

Nice to see that Swiss have adopted the Star Alliance scheme, even though they have yet to ‘officially’ join said alliance.

What’s with the LR still making MAN appearances? I thought its range was supposed to bypass MAN.

Who cares about the variety when you get that close, at such a wonderful beach with such wonderful weather with such lovely ladies to look at with a bar to sit at!

    Hear Hear!

I have been to St. Maarten, so I’m rather partial to it. The best place to spot is Maho beach, which if you turn left exiting the airport, you can’t miss it. The sunset beach bar is a must. You can relax there, have a few drinks, order a burger or some ribs (that are excellent by the way), and check out the ladies and the birds. Something that they’ve added since I went there is a list of key arrivals of the day on a surfboard by the bar.

Peter, it was never a plan from Virgin’s perspective. I have heard a rumour that a couple of Virgin 300’s might be based in SYD soon. Ties in with the fact that the SYD cabin crew base is expanding and there is a strong likelihood of it becoming a flightcrew base.

Are these A340-300’s we’re talking about? What routes will they be flying?

Is NZ getting rid of all their 763’s slowly but surely? They don’t have any 762’d left, do they?

No, not yet. It’s only 5 p.m. Pacific Standard time as I write this. The night is still young, however. 😉

    You’re an old man now

I am an old timer compared to most of y’all younsters in here. 😀
