Thanks, good information. The RAeC Trust have one of those on display at Hendon too. Can you say where D’Arcy Greig’s now resides?

Another example was shown on The Antiques Roadshow a couple of weeks ago, the owner believing that only three were made. It would now seem that more than likely each team member plus others received one, as in 1931.

    The RAeC minutes said

It was further explained that the Schneider Trophy Committee, had recommended that mementos of the Contest should be presented to the British Team and to others who had assisted in the
    organisation.
The Committee adopted this recommendation subject to funds being available from this year*s Contest, and it was decided that the presentations to those who had assisted in the organisation should take the form of a plaque.

The original suggestion was that they should receive an engraved cigarette case, but I assume that this was vetoed on the grounds that most were non-smokers (according to Orlebar)

This was the model given by Rolls Royce to A/C D’Arcy Greig DFC AFC. It is silvered bronze made by The Goldsmith’s & Silvermith’s Company in Regent Street London

Incomplete cupola, but nice to play with. There is also a BP type C turret in miniature that looks fantastic.

The incomplete cupola sold for £625 which I thought was reasonable? More surprised that the USAAF A2 jacket with squadron motif sold for over £1600 Didn’t see what the FW tool kit went for?

It is 149 Squadron on a recce trip to investigate the Mitteland Kanal near Minden, the MI9 reports should give all the details of the crew, I see they caught the boat train service, (must have received help?) landing back in the UK on the 26th March 1940

Don’t forget ‘Fifi’ ‘Vodka’ and ‘Cognac’ who fought with 32 Squadron, all veterans of the fight in Poland and part of The Montpellier Group before the Battle of Britain!

Not to forget the RAF combats (and KIA’s) that took place without the troops on the beaches seeing them, only to complain later on their return, “Where were the bloody RAF”?

Lets hope it is the IWM who made the offer, who already had his logbook. If the medals and logbook had been kept together in the first place they would have easily made £40,000 plus, thereby making a good amount for donation to the Dam project in Africa.

A good film showing the input of the Czechs in the battle, shame about the mountains in the background though!

If you want to make a good, modern aviation film, Dark Blue World is the way to go.

I watched it for the umpteenth time last night (and scary to think I first saw this almost 13 years ago!) and it STILL holds up beautifully when compared to the likes of Red Tails.

While I love Battle of Britain more than my own mother, it does have its faults. But that doesn’t mean I want to see it remade. It was, and still is, an epic in every sense of the word.
